    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Billy (George Clooney) scales the ship's mast during the storm.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
In October 1991, a dying tropical hurricane from Bermuda collided with a cold front from the Great Lakes, resulting in a "perfect storm" of previously unknown destructive impact that resulted in 100-foot waves; tragically, the crew of a fishing boat was lost in the midst of the fearsome storm. Based on the best-selling book by Sebastian Junger, The Perfect Storm tells the story of the ship's brave and hard-working crew. Billy Tyne (George Clooney), captain of the Andrea Gail, hasn't had much luck finding catch on his most recent trips to sea, and with money short, he and his crew -- Bob Shatford (Mark Wahlberg), Dale Murphy (John C. Reilly), and David Sullivan (William Fichtner) set out again when they hear that the fish are running. Billy's hunch proves correct, but when the ship's refrigeration system goes haywire, they have to return to shore as quickly as possible before the fish spoil, sending them into the middle of the worst storm in history. The supporting cast includes Mary Elziabeth Mastrantonio, Diane Lane, Bob Gunton, and Karen Allen; Wolfgang Petersen, whose breakthrough film was the aquatic wartime drama Das Boot, directed.

I give props to the blend of picture and sound. James Horner's score was incredibly orchestrated to highlight intensity, angst, and victory.

not an anchor. they're commonly called birds and theyre designed to pull down on the outriggers when theyre in the water, with one on each side of the boat they stabilise the roll of the boat. and if it were an anchor, such a small size would never hold the Andrea Gale

They weren't capsized, they were pitch-poled and it would happen regardless. All it takes to pitch-pole ANY boat is a wave at least as tall as the boat is long.
The Andrea Gail was 75'. The wave was 100'

@@wicklash9065Yes, but the boat in the film (FV Lady Grace) that was used to *portray* the Andrea Gail was only 57ft.
Also, the real Andrea Gail was 75ft. She was built at 72ft, but modified at St Augustine Trawlers in 1987, and one of the modifications lengthened her stern by 3ft to fit two 1900-gallon fuel tanks afore the transom.

@@hot13bpp Fair enough, that's a good point. Actually, the real story the film writers got this from was another boat (in a different storm) that had an outrigger cable wrap around the prop shaft, and the captain had to walk out on the deck and cut the cable from the winch (which was also on deck).
Bill Witliff (the filmwriter for the Perfect Storm) took that story and cranked it to 11 for the film

LMAO that's the most ludicrous scene ever of the whole movie, the list is to long to count what's wrong with the stabilizer scene.. And BTW, the stabilizers are more likely to be called "fish" not birds.. But then what would I know, I've only been commercial fishing the North Atlantic off N.S. for 30+ years.
