FILM DESCRIPTION:
In October 1991, a dying tropical hurricane from Bermuda collided with a cold front from the Great Lakes, resulting in a "perfect storm" of previously unknown destructive impact that resulted in 100-foot waves; tragically, the crew of a fishing boat was lost in the midst of the fearsome storm. Based on the best-selling book by Sebastian Junger, The Perfect Storm tells the story of the ship's brave and hard-working crew. Billy Tyne (George Clooney), captain of the Andrea Gail, hasn't had much luck finding catch on his most recent trips to sea, and with money short, he and his crew -- Bob Shatford (Mark Wahlberg), Dale Murphy (John C. Reilly), and David Sullivan (William Fichtner) set out again when they hear that the fish are running. Billy's hunch proves correct, but when the ship's refrigeration system goes haywire, they have to return to shore as quickly as possible before the fish spoil, sending them into the middle of the worst storm in history. The supporting cast includes Mary Elziabeth Mastrantonio, Diane Lane, Bob Gunton, and Karen Allen; Wolfgang Petersen, whose breakthrough film was the aquatic wartime drama Das Boot, directed.

Considering this was released 20 years ago, the special effects were just mind-blowing! I remember my parents renting this for a family movie night. My entire family was completely blown away at the special effects and we were all on the edge of our seats watching this scene.
That's what i always think. I don't believe anyone watching this movie in 2020 will feel the same of what it was watching it back in the day when it was new. The special effects and the soundtrack are just glorious.
I remember going to an imax theater to see this on opening weekend. I was 16 when this came out. I had NEVER seen effects like this. It was my favorite movie for a long time for that reason alone. When we bought it on DVD I would crank it on our 5.1 surround sound. It was amazing to see when it was new.

You grow bored w it in your teens... then when its gone forever, you miss it, and would trade whatever fun things you do as an adult for the "boring" things you did as a family...

In the span of about 15 seconds Clooney's face goes from heavy worry, to a flash of hopeful possibility, to the despair of doomed reality setting in.. all without a word--amazing acting.

This makes me cry because my dad served in this occupation for 30 years. Ohh dad you battle those waves and it was not easy. My heart breaks when we lose fishermen, this is what made my father so happy is bringing home seafood for you. 💕❤️😭😭😭⚓️🌊

The thing I remember most from the book was the account of the helicopter rescue guy who said that when they had to ditch in the sea because they ran out of fuel, he was trying to psych himself up to jump out into the darkness, but seeing the altimeter jump back and forth between 80 feet and 10 feet (meaning he would be jumping out into 70-foot waves) freaked him out.
I couldn’t imagine having that job😕

Rick Smith, the troughs would create an optical illusion of being close...until you realize there's 100 feet under you until impact with the water.
The craziest thing is they see sunlight so it looks like they've made it and it's smooth sailing, until you realize it's the eye of the storm.

***** The eye wouldn't have been safe. The calmness and serenity is just effects for the movie. The highest winds and the most violent parts of the storm are the walls just outside of the eye of the hurricane. In open sea, that would create for very violent waters with waves literally coming from all directions.

The way the boat looked like it was trying to climb that mountain of a wave was fucking awesome as hell. I have a lot of fear and respect for the ocean. I have no desire to be out there like that.
I have had a 45 foot Princess 45. Never experienced this. But. I can assure you he did the right thing. Faced with a huge wave (no matter in a canoe or a ship that size) put your bow into the wave. It's the only option.

Rob S. Yep the oil rig was hit so hard that it was displaced and the computer didn’t know if it was in balance or not so it toppled over and everyone on it ended up dying sadly
@@timothyprice3264 the great lakes have their fair share of sunk ship tragedies as well, ever heard of the Edmund Fitzgerald? Freshwater version of that, happened in 1975 on Lake Superior. 30-35 ft waves with occasional 40-50 ft rogue waves probably. Not as big as the ocean obviously but still just as deadly if you consider the water temperature and its freshwater so everything sinks easier than in salt

Seeing the sun break through like that and thinking you've made it out of the storm only for the storm to come back within minutes must of been heartbreaking
What's worse is that it was false hope. It was the eye of the storm.

This scene is legitimately gut wrenching. Imagine being in this situation, fighting so damn hard to get out, and then Mother Nature hits you with the NOPE
The worst thing they did (in the movie) was turn around,, they'd probably already got past half way and might as well have gone for glory. Turning back put them on the wrong side of the storm.

This makes me so emotional.. when bobby says skip we're gonna make it... the look on skipper's face just looking round and thinking on it trying to figure out if they might make it and then realising they have no chance
I remember sitting in the theater and hearing the heavy sobs in the audience. We all knew this wasn't going to end well, but despite that, we all were hoping for some kind of happy ending. When the forward of the boat dropped down and the wave started overtaking them, several cries of sorrow could be heard . I also wiped away a few tears. This was heartbreaking and horrific to watch.
scariest thing about this scene is that waves like that can happen and you'll never know it's coming until it's a split second away from hitting you
Not split second, but you'll have about 3-4 seconds to see it come up, but you won't be able to do much.

one of the few movies - that I practically know by heart. I can watch it by just hearing the dialog and music. One of the few movies that I never tire of.

James Horner's score fantastically built up the tension and horror.
James Horner's score for this movie is amazing, the tension leading up to the giant wave is fantastic.

Legends of the fall are my favorites
The glimmer of hope as the sun breaks the clouds for a second and the halcyon few minutes before the storm unveils her full hand. One of those scenes where no matter how much we watch it and we hope and pray that the Andrea Gail and her crew can crest that wave against ALL odds, she ultimately never does. One of the more epic, powerful and tragic scenes in movie history in my personal opinion.
God, this movie, like Jaws was a favorite of my childhood, it perfectly displays the thrill and adventure of being at sea, but also the utter wrath and horror it can become and honors the courage of the crew. It has plenty of action and thrills and never lets up in the final half and the effects still hold up today, for me, it's an easy 10/10.
A scary side-fact: 100ft freak waves do exist... And sometimes they occur as the 3 sisters (3 90-100ft waves in a row)
The 3 sisters is what sank the ore freighter Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975 on lake superior.I dont care what they say.Killer waves sank her.

Ok, so Shatford is almost married to the love of his life that he sweet talks in the morning. Yet he chooses a job where he's on a small fishing vessel with 5 other dudes who like to fish. Early 90's, the economy was at least better than what it is today. His lady friend waits and hangs out with his mom while he's away. Point understood here
I've been in the eye of the storm on land and it scared the crap out of me when I realized it wasn't actually over. I was only 6 years old. It was Hurricane Hugo in Charleston 1989. We literally stood on our broken porch thinking it was over while looking in the dark with flashlights at all the crap around us and then second half came and was worse than the first. I fell asleep during the second half out of pure fear & exhaustion. I distinctly remember my dad laid with me on my parents bed because I was terrified of the dark and there was no power. He kept making stupid jokes until I calm down and fell asleep. My mom, my godmother & godfather never went back to sleep as far as I know.

James Horner's foreboding musical cue at :33, seeing the darkness and finding out they were in the eye, is much like the one he used near the end of Star Trek II when Kirk looks over at Spock's empty chair and realizes something is wrong.

I dont care what anyone thinks, this is TO ME one of my favorite movies ever...so much soul in it... maybe it's so heart breaking for me because I come from one country near sea in Europe, small country Croatia, region: Dalmatia, coastal region... our fathers and grandfathers were fishermen... hard life... And they all behaved like captain (skipper) here ... really... some would think they are full of themselves, but noooo, they were not... they were SEA PEOPLE who KNEW everything needed to know about sea they hated it and loved it in the same time... BLOOD MONEY in that god damn sea....this movie and this scene always makes me cry.
They were briefly in the eye of the hurricane, where they saw sunlight and everything. However…it was brief and then, it’s the eye-wall again. The fiercest winds, heaviest rain, etc.
This movie and others like it (Fury, Rogue One, and 300) are my favorite. They give you a sense of hope that ultimately leads to the inevitable. It’s so real. This movie especially no matter how many times I watch it, and despite knowing what happens, I always have hope that they will make it.

Clooney put up one hell of a fight against the storm, but of course there's going to be that one wave that is too big for the boat. This scene still gives me chills to this day.

My worst nightmare.
I met a captain who was shrimping in the Gulf when Katrina hit. All he could do to survive is go full power straight into the wind and the boat was constantly going backwards. There was a sister ship with them about 100 yds on the side. He said the waves were so high at times he did not see the other ship.
Im a freshman maritime student and having to watch this is giving me second thoughts about my choosen goals.

Like a wicked, bloodthirsty monster that has every intention to swallow them whole -- and unfortunately, she did. Nature is a beautiful but absolutely terrifying thing, as is the ocean -- neither should be disrespected, because they are merciless.

Yeah facing that wave would smash the hope of the bravest most arrogant captain.Some things are just unstoppable and THAT WAVE was it.
They can't even be measured. We don't have access to equipment that could survive such forces, so it's impossible for us to measure the true impact force of these monsters
My dad was a fisherman. His all time favorite movie.
This movie is an example of a perfect movie, it’s not a smart movie but it’s perfect and totally engrossing.
I really love this movue. the first time i saw this in the cinema with my husband i cried silently. i felt hiw much hardships the seamen are. there life in the oceans specially when the storms come.
the book is a compeling tale of what happened: suffering, acts of bravery in the every day lives of fisherman

I am now 64; and, ever since I was four or five, I've had a recurrent nightmare (the recurrences are sometimes separated by years) where I'm sitting on a beach, and suddenly look up to see an approaching wave surging towards me. Mine is MUCH bigger than "The Perfect Storm" version -- a thousand feet tall, at least. Movies like this one, "Deep Impact", "San Andreas", and "The Abyss" -- ANY film where a giant wave is part of the proceedings -- terrify me far more than any supernatural element ever does. Oddly enough, I've never been afraid of the water itself -- I've swum in pools, and in the sea, with perfect calm, as soon as I was old enough to walk. I expect that, if I ever DO die in a giant wave, my last seconds of life will be dominated by the thought: "So THIS is what it's all been leading up to."
That said: everyone should remember that the rogue wave in "The Perfect Storm" was, and is, pure conjecture -- in reality, nobody knows HOW the "Andrea Gail" sank. I don't fault the filmmakers for making this film; but I can't help grieving for those who knew the real men in this story. Even though they obviously went to see the movie of their own free will, this scene must have caused them dreadful pain.
I used to have giant wave dreams too. Though they weren't scaring me at all, because in my dreams I would hide underwater and everything was so tranquil.
I remember reading somewhere that this storm actually produced waves over 100ft/30.5m tall. Terrifying to imagine finding yourself in the middle of that. :|
On the bonus section of the movie some experts said it could’ve been 20 feet taller
i know this is 8 years old but this is true due to the low pressure system this strom proabaly created some of the most tall rouge waves ever

really to be honest these where regular sized waves out at sea for this storm at least where the storms collide. a rouge wave is a wave a taller than the waves around it. as such as this one usely generated when 2 wave colide at the right angle to make a wave 2 to 3 time as tall as the sorrounding ones

What's terrifying is that waves like that one...and bigger, are roaming around out there in the oceans. Most ships encountering them aren't coming back to tell the tale. The MS Munchen for example

I don't think so, there's a surf spot that has some waves this large at certain points in the year, i think the largest true rogue wave was a 65 footer caught by Deadliest catch, the largest suspected ones get up to double this waves height but those are basically hearsay

A Oil Rig in the North Sea between Britain and Germany 'catched' a rogue wave of about 100 feet. That was the final prove (that some people needed).

The sunlight is the part of this scene where it looks like the hurricane is over with, but then the eye of the storm comes and the giant Rogue tidal wave comes.
That was like a glimmer of hope shining through, but then it got dark again. So sad.

i saw this in the theater. everybody was absolutely SILENT after the wave hit....and he was in the water talking to his gf :( then when they did the funeral, many people were crying

Yea weather like this sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald and the MV Derbyshire. The Derbyshire was 955 feet long the Edmund Fitzgerald was 729 feet long and this fishing boat was only 75 feet

That happens and the insurance and liabilities are a NIGHTMARE to deal with apparently.

Remember lads. No amount of fish is worth your lives. Seen too many die at sea. I work with a fella whos captain. They were on a 65ft boat coming home in stormy weather with 120 thousand lbs of fish. They wanted to make a last tow and loaded up. The boat went down almost with the observer on board. Thankfully he was found. The skipper still feels that dread all these years later. The boats called the posideon princess.

Whats scary, some experts reviewed the movie.....and told the producers the waves could of been 20 ft bigger.....that was on the bonus section of the DVD. Now that is scary.
Yikes!! This scene scared the crap out of me as it is, the idea of that wave being 20 feet bigger just makes me want to bawl my eyes out, vomit, or both.

IN 1942 the Queen Mary ocean liner was carrying 16,000 allied soldiers to Europe and got hit on the side by a 30 meter wave. Apparently the liner reached a 52 degree tilt and if it had of tilted another 3 degree the vessel would have capsized killing everyone on board.

Reading the book, this was one possibility of what happened the Andrea Gail. She was loaded with fuel and thousands of pounds of fish and in her attempt to cross the wave, the weight pulled her back and she flipped in a way that she couldn't recover from. It was horrible how Sebastion Junger described The crew's final moments 😥
yeah.. he dedicated an entire chapter to the process of drowning..
Still this as said is just one posibility.. nobody knows what happent to her.. never found the wreckage or any bodies.. just the switched off EPIRB in a beach , fuel drums and an empty raft.
Still my biggest problem with the movie is how they missed a lot of real events into other ficticious almaged together (the HH60 helicopter thar crashed in the sea was flying back from a rescue mission to a japanese sailboat ... not trying to reach the Andrea Gail..and actually it wasnt even remotelly related.. the rescue of the Satori (Mistral in the movie) was performed by a diferent H3 helicopter who flew back the survivors to land and the rescue was actually far more complex as the Tamaroa tried to send a RIB wich failed and at a moment there were 3 ships and 4 aircraft circling arround the Satori.. or why they changed the names of the helicopter crew, including the guy who died (Rick Smith) to ficticious names when leaving the Andrea Gail crew and their families names intact

George Clooney putting the boat’s engine into full throttle to climb that gigantic wave was the climax of their fight for survival. Their spirits and efforts were admirable but futile and it was disheartening to see them capsize and drown.
Tidbit of trivia, the Andrea Gail's main engine was a 365HP, 3408 Caterpillar

Debatable whether the boat would be split open, the ending of this film is basically Ernie Hazard's survivor account from the fishing boat Fairwind, which sank in a storm off George's Bank in 1980. The Fairwind was even smaller than the Andrea Gail and didn't split when it was pitch-poled by a rogue wave.

The rogue wave is actually going the wrong way. They suddenly encounter the rogue wave as soon as they leave the eye and enter the eye wall, which is the most powerful part of a hurricane. The eye walls push massive waves AWAY from the rotating center, but in the movie the rogue wave was pushing them back TOWARDS the eye, which they just left. They eye would have also broken down and demolished the rogue wave. Also, when they are in the eye, the waters are calm, like the air, but the waves would still be chaotic because of the surrounding hurricane.
3 years later....it actually wasn't a hurricane. It was a retrograde nor'easter. While it had a central circulation it didn't mean they were in the eye of the storm. Also, waves aren't pushed directly from the eye. The wrap around the eye in the motion of the storm with water being pushed and pulled depending on the quadrant of the storm (hence Ft. Myers flooding due to Ian while 40 miles north Port Charlotte bay emptied). As such, near the center of a storm circulation the waves tend to get very jumbled and can come from many different directions. Finally, we can chalk this also up to artistic license. No one knows what happened to the Andrea Gail and she has never been found. She likely went down relatively (within 50 nautical miles) close to where the Titanic rests.

The Andrea Gail's last reported position is nearly 300 nautical miles from Titanic's resting place. The Andrea Gail is in less than 3000ft of water somewhere in Banquereau, along the Scotian Shelf, the Titanic is 400nm Southwest of the Flemish Cap, below the bottom of the Continental shelf

Imagine going up that wave. Being resigned to the fact that you can and most likely will die at any moment. The adrenaline pumping through you, giving you an almost foolish thought that maybe, JUST MAYBE, you will make it over.
God, what a great movie. God rest their souls.
