- Can You Beat Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment Without the Scythe? I love the whole Shovel Knight series, and today, we’re taking on the no scythe challenge as we try to beat the entire Specter of Torment campaign without using the scythe. To beat specter knight’s story without the scythe, we’ll need to use all of our curios properly and save our darkness to make it through. As long as we don’t scythe swipe or dash, we’re good to go! So let’s celebrate the second anniversary of this DLC campaign, in this Skip the Tutorial “Is it Possible” challenge!

You could have ended this in the first minute by saying "use the Donovan armor, it's technically not a scyth"
And where would the fun be in that? He used the Donovan armor to get through parts that would be literally impossible so that he didn't have to just say 'Sorry, nope, can't do it'
However I do think it would be better if he said 'with out hurting an enemy with the scythe'
But it then makes everything else feel pointless

Man...this run feels a *lot* more juxtaposed with Donovan's Blade & the Scythe.
I mean, it could also be a "Can You Beat Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment without using your Weapon", cause...the reasonings behind it feel...weak.
I'm not trying to like a jerk, but as someone who watched the other two runs (You even hearted my comments on those two), I felt this one didn't...fully convince me.
This run feels more like the megaman pacifist runs: how much are you required to use the scythe to beat spectre of torment.
Because of the final boss requiring rail grinding, the most strict definition of no scythe is definitely impossible. You just have to decide if you're willing to be lenient or want to write it off as a no.
I mean, there are 2 options here. Either accept the technicality, or don't. This was made to show if it was possible to go without the scythe and I believe this answers it either way.
You accept that it "isn't a scythe", and the run is possible. Or not. No one honestly wanted this video to be cut short because of rails.

There's actually a code that gives you the Rail Mail from the start and makes you start grinding anytime you land on something. It also gives you super speed when you grind. It's pure insanity and I love it.

That is impressive. However to be fair, he should have called it 'With out hurting enemies with the scythe' or 'How many times do you have to use the scythe' but that would break the theme of the three videos, seeing as the other two videos where fully successful with not using the other two's primary forms of attacking

I would say its not possible, and instead call it "what is the least scythe usage needed", to me, the Donovan set is just an excuse, as it works exactly like the default scythe.
Fair argument. I think there are some surprising differences in the visual design to distinguish the two - but ultimately by comes down to preference.
I’m amazed so much of the game is beatable without it in the first place - maybe the amiibo will prove it all possible, without technicalities

Skip the Tutorial this challenge was like can you beat mario without jumping but then you spin jump instead. Oh wait, spin jump is actually a different mechanic. Looks like it’s even more of complete disregard for the challenge.

Or without opening your inventory at all... (It's possible, the Dye Shop make it easy to change clothes and even without you can get enough weapon power to beat all the ganons. Just make sure you break your bow before DBG, or it's game over)
no, you need to use arrows on the final boss and other runes to get off the great plateau.
No. No it isn't. You need bomb arrows to beat Vah Medow and Vah Naboris, something that isn't bombs to beat Vah Ruta, and the light bow to beat Ganon.
The spider scythe and Judgement Rush technically also use the scythe

I think using donavan armor as an excuse isn't exactly fair, since by that logic just going through all of the game with it technically counts as beating a challenge without a scythe.
It’s a technicality - I’ll absolutely admit that. Despite that, I do think that it highlights an interesting part of the game - and allowed us to talk about more aspects than just giving up.
Possible* is how I’ll label it. Maybe the amiibo will builds past that

Actually, Dark Reize is completely possible without slashing your weapon. All you have to do is use the lantern barrier curio (or whatever it's called). I think it's even possible to take him out before the long jump, but I'm not sure.
Edit: I haven't tried that in the normal mode, I did it in New Game+, not sure if the rest of the game is possible in this mode.
so it's basically pointless then. If you say the donovan set doesn't count as using the scythe then there's literally no challenge to the run, you can just do literally the entire game as normal and say you never used it then. It completely removes any aspect of a 'challenge run' from the concept.
I think what would've been better and more satisfying is if you went through and calculated the minimum number of times you have to use the scythe in the run and tried to get that number as low as possible. not every one of these challenges that have become popular lately is 100% successful, but it's still cool to see a game beaten with the minimum number of something instead. So I would've liked it more if you admitted defeat and tried to minimize scythe usage. But instead this just amounts to "can you beat the game by playing it completely normally, but with a slightly different sprite set?"

Why are you not counting the flashbacks as a part of the challenge because of what he's wearing but still count it as a scythe when your wearing the same outfit in normal levels? I get that the flashbacks are impossible without scythe but it felt like you were giving a poor exuse
Because he literally doesn’t have a scythe back then - the later cutscenes show him get it later.
In the play, we can talk about it being a reskin despite some animations shifts or what have you - but he’s not specter at that point and doesn’t get the scythe until the enchantress

New game plus could actually make this run significantly _easier,_ in a way. Your darkness/will slowly drains, however, it will never fall below one. At this point, the Judgement Rush, Hover plume, and Chronos Coin become unusable, but every other curio can be used free of charge, as much as you like. As long as you don't take any damage...

Bruv, I get you were worried about breaking the rules, but you could have pulled the curtains over my head and started the video with "Donovan set, yo! let's knife these lanterns!" And I wouldn't have felt cheated. The fact that despite being forced the use that particular technicality on occasion, you still managed to beat it with such a limited pool of darkness and tools. That speaks magnitude to your skill and commitment to the original challenge. WELL MET STT! WELL MET!

You should have used the raiment of risk more. Once you break a checkpoint, you are given infinite magic regeneration, which I'm certain would have made most levels much easier.

If you ignore needing hm users, I beat pokemon red using only my starter (I choose bulbasaur for that run). Didn't try any of the others.

I love the chaotic approach to the "rules" on this one, addressing the challenge with the "spirit of the law" and not necessarily the "letter of the law". I used to think these sorts of challenges were a bit silly, but here I am actually intrigued. ;D

You can actually use precise damage boosts to skips some of the trickier sections (like the book room). And the judgement rush can be used to renew your wall run, if no enemies are onscreen.
1. Using donovan's sword for surfing is a HUGE technicality (and in my standards disqualifies the run; keep in mind it is specter knight playing through these stages NOT donovan[he is wearing his donovan clothes sure but this technicality does not sit well with me])
(That being said im fine with using the sword in the flashback levels)
2. During the reize boss fight slashing the lanturns as intended with donovan's sword I also consider breaking the rules. It is not donovan fighting reize it is specter knight wearing donovan armor and should therefore have his sword be considered his scythe
So to summarize, is it possible to beat specter of torment without using the scythe: NO polar knight's stage and the reize boss fight are immpossible to beat without using the *scythe*

Just a tip, the claw can kill that huge fish in Treasure's stage. It takes two hits and a hefty amount of darkness, though, and make one wrong move and it respawns, so use at your discretion.
Fun thing about NG+ mode, certain curios can continue to be used even when your darkness is reduced to 1, like my personal favorite, the DREAD TALON.
Next challenge: Can you beat king of cards without being a selfish jerk.
The Donovan armor technicality is the equivalent of playing tag and being like “I touched your shirt so that counts”
Fun fact: Most curios can be used infinitely in NG+, costing no darkness if you have none left.
...Unfortunately, two of the three exceptions to to this are the judgement rush and the hover plume.
PS.: a relatively simple way would be to just use the raiment of risk and spam the will skull as soon as you get even a scrape. You just have to not die too.
I loved this DLC when I played it, with the fast paced gameplay. If I could choose another knight to play as, I would choose the gyroscopic jester himself, propeller knight.
Fun fact about the big fish in Treasure Knight's stage, you actually *can* kill it. And no I dont mean with the anchors. The talon curio actually is able to do damage, though it's around 3 hits to bring it down.

you can actually kill the "unkillable" fish in treasure knight's stage if you time it's swimming to land underneath one of the falling anchors, the anchors kill it instantly if they hit it from above (and the hitbox for that is pretty lenient)
That "invincible" fish is actually killable with the death claw, though I don't think that's be a good idea in this run.
Honestly, I'm surprised it's even possible*, considering. Overall, an impressive feat you've accomplished. You've proven all three Shovel Knight campaigns thus far beatable without the main weapon. I hope you're going to do one on King Knight's campaign to round out the playable campaigns, because I'll be waiting avidly for that day!
Huh, for my purposes I guess the answer is no, but that’s another intense run. You reminded me that I need to mess around with the risk suit. And I’m sure you got a lot of flak for the Donovan suit but I appreciate that you used it minimally and still made it a curio dependent run

King Knight King of Cards be like: GET NAE NAED
The "Unkillable Fish" is killable, actually! Just use the Talon attack, and a few hits should bring it down... unless I'm misremembering. But I'm 100% on the fact that anchors also kill him.
While it's not terribly Darkness-efficient, you *can* kill the "invincible" fish using the upgraded claw. It takes two swings to kill it, and you get a ton of cash and Darkness from it when you do.
Now this is awesome 3 videos of shovel knight treasure trove and the characters without using their main weapon.
The way I see it is rail riding is fine because you’re not pressing attack, it just happens. In fact I think equipping the a
Silver armor might be a cool run. And then no attacking in the memories. I think those levels are ok to treat as different because you don’t have your usual curio set! I’m working on a King of Cards jumpless :)

I wonder if King of Cards can be beaten without the Shoulder Bash...
I tried New Game+ earlier this week and with a lot of practice, luck, and the Rail Mail to get past some spikes without hovering, I managed to beat the first level. (The fact that damaging Curios can be used even after your Will/Darkness meter is fully depleted guarantees any boss fight is possible)
For every other level in New Game+ the Raiment of Risk would likely be the best, and would make every level boil down to 1) Make into the midway checkpoint with regular NG+ restrictions, 2) Complete the second half of the level with regenerating Will/Darkness but a lower maximum Will/Darkness, 3) Beat the boss essentially damageless.
So far The Lich Yard is the only level I've beaten the first half of, and rather inconveniently, it's the only level that has an area that may actually not be beatable with the shrunken Will/Darkness meter (the fact that step 3 is beating Phantom Striker with no damage doesn't exactly fill me with confidence either).
Skip the Tutorial: "This stupid unkillable fish..."
Me: *tries to kill him and it dies by being crushed by an anchor that was surrounding me and it* " You were saying"
Soooooo... a few things ng+ darkness meter is actually more forgiving than it looks as it will drain down to one hp, once you reach that you can use use as many curios as you like with no ill effects you just can't take any hits.
Also from looking at speed runs the bounding soul, judgement rush and barrier lantern are your friends here. If you have an upgraded bounding soul it can bounce off the ground and wall in the corner after passing through a boss for triple hits. Combined with rapid fires shots it melts bosses.
As you gleaned the judgement rush can be abused to skip entire sections and might have helped with some of those sections where donovan came out.
Finally the barrier lantern Grant's immunity from projectiles and can do crazy efficient damage if it blocks a few hits. It can also allow you to do reasonable damage to corrupted rieze without using the scythe and hover past some lantern sections.
When the enchantress is below the stage you can use the spider scythe in the corner to get good damage on her
Fun challenge, great idea. But your reasoning in the Ice Stage is weird. Using Donovan's outfit because it lets you ride without a scythe, with that reasoning you could just do a complete Donovan run because the guy doesn't have a scythe. The idea of the challenge seems to me that you don't use your attack button. Using the same rules for the Scythe Economy achievement. A Curio-only run.

Me: I think you need to beat the game
The non-Donovan run would be possible until Nightmare Reize because you can use the risk cloak to get past Polar Knight’s rail sections. Nightmare Reize’s entire fight is based on rails & I doubt you’d have enough darkness to get through the entire fight with judgement rush. (I don’t think the Spider scythe curio can touch the rails.)
Actually, the fish in treasure knights stage can be killed with the claw. Probably not ideal for this run, but i just wanted to let you know it's not unkillable.

While I think the run should have ended on the technicality it was still a good video as always, can't wait to see what challenge runs you do in the future
