Plumber using our beam saw was definitely a scare. I had an HVAC tech take my saw when I was 17, years went upstairs to cut a block.. Ran the saw across his arm and was bleeding bad running down the stairs to get to his truck. I helped him wrap it up and he split.. I don't raise my voice often, but someone using a saw that isn't experienced scares me.
Hey Matt. Big fan. Been following you for a while. Caught the comment about your thumb hurting. I had an issue with my thumb and went to my chiropractor. He used the Graston Tools on me and I got instant relief.
No way! I’m so stoked to hear that. I’ll get myself in.. Normally I think back pain / neck pain when I think chiropractor. I didn’t know they could help with hands and such.
We got my Dad & one other dude with me here. Hard to have drama when you go to Thanksgiving with them. ☺️ Only thing we cut out is any curse words, so the channel is PG.
This is why I like construction if everyone talks its mostly work related on getting work done and not none of that outside work drama talk that gets annoying sometimes
New sub here. You do great work Matt. Here in TX its blow and go, no one gives AF anymore, its a race to the bottom. I got out of framing, I mostly do remodels now, just about burnt out with construction but its all i know.. ugh. Take care, stay safe, thanks for the content.
Question about why you drop your headers? I see a few people do it but to me it seems like it’d be better to keep it high just in case of a window change order is there a reason why you drop them or just habit?
I notice when you frame the walls the on the ground one side of all the framing is flush. Is it more important to have flush framing on the inside or outside? Recently helped with T&G on an interior and some studs protruded out more than others so we had a lot of shimming to do.
Hey matt love watching you build, i was just wondering why you guys dont sheet before you stand the walls? And if you have tried wall jacks and your thoughts on them
Potentially silly question but am I right in thinking that that untreated plate he originally nailed around the perimeter is taken back off and becomes a top plate when it’s marked up alongside the bottom plate?
@29:11 as someone who previously worked in a hospital with patients. Careful how much you drink water, it can flush out vital nutrients and electrolytes that your body needs to function (yes, you can die from it, water poisoning). Have a gatorade or powerade or something that has electrolytes in it to help you stay properly hydrated and not just water!
Hey Matt! Another great video. So interesting to see how this works. I do have a question, if you've got the time. What are the pieces of wood you put between the studs? I'd assume they are to strengthen the wall, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Also, what is the advantage of using 4x4s instead of 2x4s for some of the studs? Is this also just for strength, or is this a different reason? What makes your choice between the two?
Studs run top to bottom, just create the wall. Headers are the 6x8 material that goes ABOVE the window. This is an engineers preference after calculating the roof load above. Top cripples (little 2x6) go above the header. The sills (create the window sill) go under the window rough opening and are just (2) 2x6. The bottom cripples go underneath the sill to support it. Our blocking we do at 3'6 and 4'6 and it runs horizontal. This is just to strengthen the wall. It's done with 2x6. Any 4x6 or 6x6 that goes into the wall as a full height piece of material is just done to achieve shear values engineers want, basically.. it's a big piece of wood that we attach plywood to in order for us to not let the building fall over.
Man seeing this really hurts haha. I've been trying to land a job in residential construction for about 6 months now. With no experience, no one is willing to give me a call back. I try to call into the companies I see posting on Indeed so I can talk with someone, but im always gate-kept by the receptionist! I just wanna learn the trade man, cmon! Tx NEED quality carpenters, but it seems no one is willing to train anyone anymore.
Just keep calling them back. They won't ever give you a call back unless you bug them, don't speak to a office dwelling receptionist, speak to someone that works out there, find one of their job sites and see if they'll let ya join.
Hold downs, structural connections. Basically using that corner 6x6 as a structural member for one or two HDU2 hold downs to attach to. It’s also where we end our shear walls.
Why don't you slam the headers up against the double top plate and build the window opening down from there? I almost never set my headers at height if there is a size change up and down its easy peasey to change.
My main reason is to cater to engineers who want perforated shear walls. Where we strap at the header. They rely on the header for strap to nail into.. So it’s just common practice to hold them low, although I’d like to slam and frame down.
I’m watching from Uk , nearly all the saws over here are blade right which makes no sense , I have a couple of blade left makita s which are much better but the other carpenters don’t like them , I guess it’s what you get used to

The price of gas and electricity is too high we must use Japanese hand saws and other hand saws. I find it interesting how you use 4x6 for headers in cali.
I’ve only ever done 2x10 for lintels up here in Manitoba.
Hello just found ya. looks like will be watching for a bit. Why the 4x6 posts, is it cost or ?

@MattBangsWood what boots are you wearing?
If you have a 2x6 wall and you need a shearwall there with 2-2x6. How do you include this 2-2x6? I mean just one 2x6 from the 2-2x6?
Cool to watch how the you frame out west compared to the Midwest. Keep up the good work
Appreciate you watching! Where you stay?

Hi, fairly new to the channel but I noticed you are using a pneumatic nailer is that still better than a cordless framing nailer?
Do you watch the bow in the studs as you go? Does it matter for interrior versus exterior on which way the bow of the studs go?

Why do the plans call for 4x6 studs in some places instead of doubling up a 2x6? Same question for the 6x6 headers? Is it a local code requirement?
Not code, just engineering preferences. This building is a weird one.. I’ll share more on this soon!
Did you check the concrete for being flat and level and cut each stud accordingly or just send it
Wouldn’t custom cut studs / stick frame unless it was off a good amount. Not a single dip visible to us, place is as flat as it gets.
Can someone explain why such big header over the windows? Like Wouldn’t a double plate of the 2x6 work?
Engineering.
Considering getting into framing at the lowest level
I have no previous experience
What’s something you’d tell a newbie
Whats the reasoning of solid wood headers. I live in the midwest and we just use 2 by material. Just curious
Use black chalk Matt. Don't like difference from treated to pine plate width. Do you have a issue with that?
I’m having issues with top plate material in general.. I’ve got everything from 5-1/4” to 5-1/2”, makes for a bad time framing!
Are these walls plumb and level?
Curius that you don't require any bottom flashing or sill seal
Whats up with the floating trimmers? Don't see that much anymore.
Floating trimmers? Broken trimmers? It’s common in CA.
I would be lucky if I could carry one of those beams today but there was a time!!
I've never seen so much framing with 4x6 and 6x6 is this something new? could you elaborate
California Engineering forces this on us!

That circular saw is massive lol
Are those guns better than the new hitachis
No, it’s a good gun, but listen to how fast my Dad’s NR83A shoots vs the gun I use. Same compressor, same hose.
The new Hitachi’s are great, just lots of safety features that make me avoid them.
@@MattBangsWoodI removed the plunder spring and push lever spring then trimmed off the plunder cover so I can shoot one handed. Easy mods to the a5.

104-1/4” - don’t know why some are 5/8 and others 1/4.

Hold downs, structural connections. Basically using that corner 6x6 as a structural member for one or two HDU2 hold downs to attach to. It’s also where we end our shear walls.
