2020. The worst year that most of us have ever experienced. A pandemic took the lives of millions, forced us to stay isolated indoors for months, shut down the globe, and forever changed the way we live and work.
Some of us, like Anna Del Priore, who lived to 108, not only experienced the chaos of Covid-19 but ALSO lived through the Spanish Flu in 1918, which killed an estimated 20 to 50 million people around the world. For Anna, the ‘worst year ever’ award might be tough to give.
But what if I told you that there was a time in recorded history that was worse, far worse, than both 2020 and 1918?

Opera advertising team is on fire, they almost contracted every single youtuber😂
Shame it's a horrible piece of software
Yeah, and they disgusted every single one of us!
I found the Corona time, the stillness of it, really great. Good for soul searching.
Same. I miss when everything was shutdown. I remember driving here in rural Missouri in April- there was NOBODY else on the roads or out and about. It was surreal, and I loved every second of it. The cities were so eerily quiet too.
I think folks like us will weather whatever next crisis comes along just fine. It taught me some of us are a lot more tough and resilient than 95% of the people we are around. I had a sunny disposition through it all, even though I got sick in February and had long symptoms (horrific brain fog) until my shots in April/May 2021. Just keep on smiling! 🙂
@mind5403 So what? Shit happens all the fucking time, it aint our fault. Some people didn't have as bad as a time as others, if you want to blame somebody for that then look towards fucking China.
I also didn't really mind the corona times. Felt like there was finally "peace" from the constant noise of the world.
@mind5403A person cannot reasonably concern themselves with everyone and everything but themselves and everyone is living their own story and finding positives in negative situations so just sit back and take it easier than you have here

My worst year was 1999-2024 and still going.
Happy 25th birthday
@@vaughnjwallace one more month, but thank you lol.
Same, I'm on a streak🤙🏻
I had a worst decade in my 20’s.
I lost my Grandpa at 20…my older brother at 21…my Dad at 24…my other older brother at 27😔…My family has been forever changed.
I did have a baby girl at 30🥰. She was the best baby and is a great daughter. I am grateful 🌎☀️❤️
I am glad for your new life, stranger.
Sorry about the first few things. However, CONGRATS ON YOUR DAUGHTER!!!!!
So you were the person mentioned in the first part of the video, that is not good.
May God give you the power to fight on brother , life is unfair . but we keep the memories , we live on for them . be strong brother , become the dad she will remember , become a legend a good person that will push us forward in the future as human kind
buckle up buttercup life has not even started with you yet
I found myself after corona. The solitude and our fragile life made me comprehend the importance of how rarity it's to be alive.
honestly i think it was 2021-2022, in 2020 i was still in the period where i was thinking "wow! no school!"
Chilling with my blunt while listening to aperture is the best feeling ever.
And I miss the days where I could just chill and do that. It’s too damaging now.

The worst year to be alive is subjective and subject to environmental influence. One man's junk is another man's treasure.
he literally said that in the beginning
Our ancestors survived that year just so i can exist today, and yet I'm just wasting valuable time by doom scrolling. Must make it count from my successors.

Most of the Covid year was great for me. Because of doing school online I had a lot of time to go places and just have fun. Didn't have to worry about missing school. It only got bad at the end when everything just felt depressing
Anything can happen again. It's how it's dealt with that matters.
My worst year was 2023

Yup same
It truly was

2023 was certainly mid but still okay
I like the new format focusing on more history! How about a video on astrophobia? There are some terrifying planets out there that seem so interesting to me.

Man I loved covid year. Got to work from home. Got to chill. Workout more.
For me, 2021 was worse because whilst 2020 felt novel continued lockdown and taking my GCSEs made me depressed for a while in 2021. So glad I am out of it now.
where did you get the background music that comesi n around 3:00?
2020 was the worst but it could've been worse tho. Way worse than expected tbh, ya know.
2020 was a treat looking back. Sure it was a scary time but it was peaceful... No war, no inflation...people actually realised whats important. And now it's like it never happened and people have changed for the worse imo, which may not be directlt their fault as the saying goes a hungry man is an angry man.
Unfortunately, quickly forgotten
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger seems to apply to these situations. Technically people would die, but death in this situation would mean wiping out of all humans, which doesn't happen. Therefore we tend to come out even stronger than before and better prepared than before. Just look arounds us today, so many of the technologies that we use today were either invented or accelerated due to the world wars. It's just amazing what we are capable of when survival instincts takes the front seat.
Soot is pronounced with a short o sound not long o just FYI. Great video.
Can you give me the name of thr music you had playing during the opera ad
Ever since 2020 every year that I've experienced has been better than the last I mean here in Southeast Missouri there was no lockdown and nothing particularly was changed other than Walmart's weren't open 24/7 anymore so things are absolutely great
Getting over 50 years old is when it started for me...😬
The time just after the lockdown started felt really weird, it was a liminal time
2024 is the best year of my life hands down
2020 till now has been awesome! Had a year where I didn’t have to deal with people, had time to think and sort out my mental health, and business has been booming since. A repeat would be awesome!
Seattle shout out LETS GOOO
The pain remains
If it happened again most would rush to Facebook to complain about or TikTok only a very few would put pen to paper so ironically in the future there still maybe more information about 536CE then about any future catastrophe.
Dude idk why I thought that joke about seattle at 3:23 was so funny
That’s what my professor said. “Things tend to go in cycles.” Nice way to end the video!
"history never repeats itself, but it often rhymes".... Or some shit like that
I use Opera but Aria has never worked for me and I can't figure out why. I just disabled it so I could stop being annoyed about it.
I found the covid times to be surreal more than anything. Fortunately i had just started a job in a hospital lab. Driving there was weird. Empty streets, silence.... Just odd.
I mean, sure it sucked, but there are probably dozens if not hundreds of other points in our history which were far worse. Being thrust in the Great Wars wouldn't have been fun, nor would the period of the Black Plague, Spanish Inquisition, being born a slave in any point in history, being a victim of a Viking Raid, etc. We live in relatively peaceful times with advanced technology compared to how violent it was in the past and how limited our knowledge was compared to now, though unfortunately problems and difficult times will always exist. The outcome of 2020 might have been comparable to the Spanish Flu if it had happened a hundred years ago. Technology has advanced a lot. But in the end, it depends where you live. For the people in Ukraine and Gaza, the last two years and six months respectively have been the worst they've experienced in a long time in terms of a time to be alive. People in Haiti are going through a particularly rough patch as well. So it depends where you live and when.
I fully agree, but he did say at the beginning that everyone's experience is different, and he was just talking about when was the objective worst time to be born on the planet Earth
I think we’re reaching a point where we are about to enter the new Worst Years To Be Alive, because of what’s happening with the climate and environment. It is actually quite possible that we will go extinct within the next century or two- despite what non-evidence driven optimists will insist- given the severe polycrises we are now facing today that are only going to get worse.
Will there be another year like 536? Absolutely, sooner than later. And this time, it’s not even going to take a volcanic eruption to make it happen.
Very likely we’ll live to see times worse than 536 AD thanks to climate change, the collapse of the biosphere, and the sheer amount of environmental pollution we’ve released onto the planet- not to mention all the other things in Pandora’s Box that will be released as these issues grind us into the ground (war, in particular, which now has the ability to be waged on scales never before seen and which can quite literally end the world thanks to nuclear armaments alone).
But it won’t be boring. So that’s a plus. 😊
@@Smethells2023 Maybe, but hopefully not. Humans have certainly made a mess of things, but the earth will heal in time. Humans are also quite resilient. But it remains to be seen if our planet will continue to be habitable in the distant future.
@@kayskreed It will take tens of thousands of years, if not hundreds of thousands, for “Earth to heal”. Because we are headed into territory of 6-10°C of warming in our future, which is not survivable for humans and most complex forms of life. Also ignoring dwindling natural resources; we’ve peaked for nearly everything, and we’ve still got 8+ billion people globally to provide for. Things are only going to get exponentially harder from here on out: new scientific breakthroughs and touted miracle solutions, accessible resources to extract, etc. In any case, maintaining today’s standard of living and production output is not going to happen; this was a one-off moment in our history that was only possible because, for a time, we had abundant resources, land, and stable climate conditions.
it’s gonna be 1 am for me, & here i’m watching aperture videos on my phone, sitting in a completely dark room
I live in Tennessee and Covid literally changed nothing about normal life here. Like nothing changed at all
2020 was the best year of my life.
im willing to bet if something similar ever happened scientific priority number 1 would be getting the dust out of the sky and we could get it mostly fixed in less than a lifetime
Nah 2020 is the worst. Once you realise the truth about what happened, and not what the TV tells you happened.
Yes cause all this is natural. It’s life but the Spanish flu and Covid both after looking so deep. It’s man made crowd control. Keep the numbers down, and keep us divided.
The pandemic and after era is the worst 😭
After era is officially called the “new order”.
What about the Toba catastrophe?
how bout -2, it was my fav year for sure
I was pregnant during Covid, My daughter was born in 2020🤗the best and worst 🫣
Volcanic winter.
Well it's too bad they didn't have the opera browser and google back in 536 AD.
All I know is things will get worse
To be born is to suffer. No being has consciously chosen to be "here" we are all forced to be wherever we appear ro be now in time and space. THIS is the trajectory of Totality. We have been pulled into ITS story without fully knowimg why. The story is never fully revealed to ITSELF." Hello infinite self in another form". Everything is the ONE appearing as the many. The only action upon realisation of this within ITSELF is surrender to what is.
Wasnt it proven that more than one volcano erupted during that 18 month period?
Idk about yall but 2020 was one of the best years of my life 🤷
I´m a simple man, I see Aperture upload, i click
The worst year for me? 2015-2016 man that was hard. Made it though.
Ancestors screaming at me like think mihawk
the rise of islam was defenetly the worse thing that happend
agreed
Well it's likely that it hasn't been in any of our lifetimes. Thing is people today have grown up in a pretty tame world relative to what it could be and has been. So they dont have a real perspective of how bad bad can get. Its like hearing about Normandy, whatever idea we think we can muster about what it felt like to be there, you can not scratch the surface of what it really felt like. Only way to truly know something is to experience it, n without it your perspective can never be sufficiently indicative of that things true nature.
2023 was the worst and 2024 is very close atm
2020 wasnt that bad for me ngl
just felt like it never happened
same with 21 and 22
i think '08 was p bad tho
this year isnt bad but scary bc layoffs
Volcanos classically with their suit and debris
In today's world, anything is possible.
The worse ?!
I don't have time to watch right now, but I will.
However, I wanna point out some silly BS: According to the Chinese zodiac, I'm a dragon. The year of the dragon comes every 12 years. 2024 is the year of the dragon. That means 2012 was also yotd. So was 2000. Did a quick search now, guess what, 536 also year of the dragon. Apparently, the world keeps fkn ending in the year of the dragon. Funny?
So you're saying that a warmer planet is better for everyone.

Well with a bait title like that I'd would be a fool not to look into it.
At least 536 and 1918 were real.
Hopefully, it’s not worth bothering about . Then again not bothered either way .

Try worst yearS. Plural. Sequential. For me, it's pretty much been like that for nearly all of my existence on this planet. 2016-2019 finally, FINALLY started to look like I had at least one tiny glimmer of hope, but... nope. Indeed, late 2019 and early 2020 nuked it all. And despite becoming an award-winning author over 2021-2023... it doesn't matter. :) You can't undo 40+ years of jankety-jank with 3-6, lol. And now, I only have a few years remaining. AND I DON'T EVEN WANT 'EM. I just gotta get some stuff done by EOY 2026, and after that... I'm outta here, suckahz. And I ain't ne'er comin' back. Never.
I find it Oh so strange that there are no african tales about this year.

Hahahaha, that's nothing. The "worst year to be alive" in the last 1500 years, but there are the event 3000 years ago and 4200 years ago which collapsed many civilizations. There is also the event 6000 years ago that was so brutal that Christian religion has it as the "creation of the world". There is also the Younger Dryas 12,000 years ago which caused the extinction (or near extinction) of most mammals above 40kg (so that includes humans). The further back you go, the less you see smaller events like "the worst year to be alive". These are natural destruction cycles related to changes both on Earth and the Sun.
FYI, the current changes in climate/atmosphere/sun (and anomalies on all the planets in the solar system) MAY indicate that we are entering another cycle. Of course, people will try to benefit from any crisis.

2020 wasn't the worst year for me by any chance. Its definitely subjective. Many deaths due to other causes were reported as COVID deaths by hospitals. A virus which has a survival rate of 99.5%-99.9% shouldn't be taken that seriously. Personally, I introspected on my life and changed my job otherwise I'd be doing the same shitty job with no growth. I focussed on my fitness and diet which I had been ignoring for many years before. 2020 turned my life around.
