Architect Kyra Thomas's innovative transformation of an old warehouse into a modern family home in Queens Park, Sydney, is a remarkable example of creative architectural adaptation. The house, which sits within the original brick walls of the warehouse, is both private and expansive, offering a blend of industrial exterior and bright, open interior spaces.
    Architectural Concept and Execution
Kyra and her husband Julian purchased the warehouse to convert it into their home, taking advantage of its unique structure to create a case study for Kyra's architectural practice. Retaining the warehouse's 3.5-metre-high brick walls allowed Kyra to design without typical residential constraints, focusing on the void within these walls to cultivate a sense of openness and connection to the outdoors.
    Design Features
    Exterior and Entrance:
The house features a dark and understated exterior with two entrances accessed via long driveways.
Despite its industrial look, the interior contrasts sharply with its brightness and openness.
    Courtyards:
The house is centered around four courtyards, ensuring light, air, and outdoor connections in every part of the home.
Two larger courtyards face north, enhancing the central family spaces with natural light and a sense of space.
Two smaller, south-facing courtyards provide additional light and outdoor views for the daughter's bedroom and the main bathroom.
    Interior Layout:
The plan includes clear sightlines, such as from the main bedroom to the corner courtyard, enhancing the depth and layering of space.
Full-height walls, glazing, and doors (three metres high) create a sense of continuity and openness.
The seamless integration of materials and precise detailing, with flush glazing frames and hidden blinds, contribute to the home's minimalist aesthetic.
    Material Palette:
A minimal and warm palette includes white walls, sandblasted Italian limestone floors, and black oak veneer kitchen joinery.
Timber joinery adds warmth and natural color, while stainless steel benchtops reflect light, enhancing the bright interior.
    Landscaping and Sustainability:
The courtyards, landscaped by Christopher Owen, feature plants that bloom at different times of the year, providing dynamic and ever-changing views.
Sustainability features include a concealed water tank, solar panels, and plans for a future battery to enable 100 percent solar power.
    Conclusion
Kyra and Julian's home, encased within the original warehouse walls, defies conventional expectations of residential architecture. It harmoniously integrates privacy and openness, industrial heritage and modern living, creating a tranquil and joyful environment for their family. The project showcases Kyra's architectural prowess in transforming a challenging site into a serene and functional family home.
