Jocelyn, the green glass pyramid-shaped object is a reproduction of a deck prism used in old ships. It was built into the deck to collect light for the lower deck. I worked at the Museum Company in the 90's and this was one of the items we sold. I have one! I googled it and it came up on EBay at $125. Worth more than you thought! Love your videos.

Our family went to Venice and we went to the little island of Murano. We went on a boat bus to all islands around Venice. Murano had on the main square a massive glass centre piece that was around 5 meters, 15 feet in diameter and about 2 meters high, 6 feet. There were so many shops and little factories that only made and sold glass.

A girlfriend of mine and I did that in 2013. It was an amazing experience! We watched a glassblower in Murano prepare several pieces. We also found the neighboring island of Burano captivating! Can't wait to see it again one day.

The "snuff" bottles were originally used for cocaine. In the early 1900s, it became illegal to import drug paraphernalia. The name was changed to get around the problem.
European makers did use the design for snuff, scents as well as cocaine. The later Victorian era would use these for smelling salts incase the lady fainted from her corset being too tight. You have to remember that cocaine wasn't banned until the 1920s.

Why are they called "snuff" bottles? Growing up, ladies I saw with snuff "dipped" it and put the snuff in their lower lip area (inbetween the lower lip and their bottom teeth.)

I would very much love to know how you prioritize and set your max budget for each item. I would also love to see all (or many) of the pieces at the auctions that you frequent! It seems that they are treasure troves of tons of fabulous options!
    😍😍😍

    00:56 I'd say he's more than a little bare! 🤣
01:52 I had an internal debate about him, but in the end decided it's an anteater, based on the shape of the nose and ears. Aardvarks got more ears and less nose.
03:08 Those are rice bowls, sure as Sunday.
04:08 That is the most bored-looking pair of putti I've seen in a month.
04:53 I think it was a cigarette box, and yes, it had two rails to centre the lid which are now gone. (Ask Andrew to see whether one of his cigs will fit inside.)
05:25 Do what?? I never knew Wedgwood did glass!
07:29 That one is for perfume. I have one like it mounted in silver, which belonged to my great-grandmother.
07:39 That's perfume too. The lady would have worn it on a chain round her neck, like a pendant.
09:55 It is. And ginkgo leaves.
16:23 _That,_ my dear, is a margarita pitcher! Heublein made them as a promotional item for José Cuervo tequila, which they then owned, in 1975. You can serve either margaritas or straight tequila shots from it, as you prefer. I'd say $20 to $25, although you might get lucky and find a damfool who'll bid it up.
16:35 They're giving me a Charles Rennie Mackintosh kind of vibe, about 1910. And if not him, some other Beaux-Arts obsessed glassie.
20:00 Well, I _think_ it's a salmon, but maybe a trout. Something you'd fish for in Scottish rivers, anyhow.
20:42 JOCE-lynnnn ... that's a Sears knockoff of a Kodak Carousel slide projector! And the carousel that carries the slides is missing, although you can pick those up on eBay. Heck, I could make use of that myself; I have an absolute crapton of family slides from the last two generations of family and no projector. I don't know what the two canisters are, although I suspect them of being 8mm home movie film. _That_ I do have a projector for, a Bell and Howell Filmo Master 400 from 1934 that I swear has been in cold storage, it's so beautiful and runs so well. Everything about it works, though I don't use it much--Sylvania stopped making the 500W bulbs for it in the 1970s so you have to rely on finding people with NOS. I conserve the ones I have. (You wanna send those reels to me, I could probably rig up something to transcribe them.)
23:17 OK. First thing, DON'T get flipped out by the swastika. Flat on its bottom and not tipped, it's an ANCIENT symbol of friendship and goodwill in multiple cultures, several thousand years old. (If it's balanced on point and called a _hakenkreuz,_ then you're allowed to worry.) The elephant is also a symbol of good luck and goodwill.
"Jain" is another indication of goodwill. The Jains are a very very pacifistic religion akin to Hinduism but more so, opposed to the taking of any sort of life at all. They're completely vegan in diet, and their priests carry little brooms with them wherever they go to sweep their paths, in case they should accidentally step on and kill an insect.

  • @kellymc67

That symbol definitely had a different meaning before you know who used it. They are on our downtown library outdoor molding and it was built way before then. It is Sanskrit for "well-being"

If you compare that symbol to the Nazi symbol, you may find that it is reversed. Many artifacts from native American tribes were decorated with the reverse form of the symbol.

The greenish yellow glass pyramid is from the Mystic Seaport, Mystic CT. and is a deck prism replica. The point goes down and the top would be level with the wood deck. You could walk on these but they brought great light to the decks below. The Charles W. Morgan, a whaler has these in its deck. This is the large size and would retail between $25-30.00.
Love your videos! Claire from Alabama

The pyramid shaped “paperweight” on the third cart is a reflecting glass that shipbuilders would set into the deck of a ship to provide some reflected light into the hold. There are a lot of replicas out there. Used mostly as paper holders now.

WOW… you picked up some phenomenal brooches 😍 & I can’t imagine what you have in the bags!! I love seeing your auction hauls because you always see something different & exciting. I can’t believe that those two pieces of art were waiting to be trashed 🙈 & I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be too STILL be dealing with the dumpster issue! Just as an FYI: everyone from the ancient Greeks, many past & present religions to the Boy Scouts Of America & US Air Force used or continue to use the symbol of "Good Health" frequently. We studied it in an art history class I took in college & the Greek Key pattern is actually made up of connected swastikas & we see it used regularly in modern textiles, wallpaper, carved reliefs, etc. but we don’t process it as the standalone symbol of hate it became in the 30’s/40’s. There is a really interesting book that I’ll go look for that talks about all of the American uses of it, the people who are trying to help separate it’s true meaning from the abuse it endured & will post the name & author back in with a tag in case anyone who works with you would like to read it. I think Andrew would really like the military aspect of it & you would be shocked at just how many companies used it in advertising! Hope you are all doing well, sending everyone 🤗💜&🙏🏻 for a wonderful & blessed week ahead!

The elephant vase with symbol, generally they would be in the opposite direction then when the Hitler used it. You will see that on American Indian and a few other countries. I had ceiling tins from back east restaurant ceiling 1880’s that were inverted swastikas.

I'm pretty sure it's a sun on the India vase thing. It comes from Buddhism. It's a sun symbol.
