  • Franz Joseph I of Austria - A Reign That Led To The Downfall Of The Habsburg Empire: Franz Joseph Karl Of Habsburg-Lorraine was born on 18 August 1830 in Vienna. He was the grandson of Emperor Francis, and the eldest son of Archduke Franz Karl and Princess Sophie of Bavaria. Franz Joseph became emperor of Austria after the abdication of Ferdinand I, and is most likely best known for his marriage to the Elisabeth in Bavaria, who is well known as Sisi.

Franz Joseph is my favourite monarch, yes he had his faults, but like Queen Victoria. He also had personal tragedies of his own. It's no wonder Queen Victoria really admired him!

The Habsburg Empire may declined under his reign and its military was far from the best, but I still have huge respect to Franz Joseph for being a workaholic and being able to speak many languages. This emperor also really did a good job at holding a multiethnic together while seeing many of his relatives dying at the same time. Austria-Hungary still industrialized and modernised under his reign, such as building the 2nd largest railway system in Europe and the 4th largest machine-building industry worldwide. Literacy rates were greatly increasing and cities like Vienna were rapidly growing, to the point it used to be even bigger than it is today. He was also friendly towards Jews. He, Maria Theresa and Charles V of Habsburg are my favourite Habsburg monarchs.

Franz Joseph is like father to all the nations that become his subject. Whether they like him or not, he's still their father. And like every fathers, when he died, his children going on their own.

03.30 h 😮. Each morning. I guess he and Louis XIV. would have made great working companions. Discipline and work ethos. No European Empire survived the WW I. Austria, Germany and Russia. Only the kingdoms made it through the World Wars.

Just went to Vienna and learned about him. He and his son, Crown Prince Rudolf (original heir before Franz Ferdinand), had many arguments about politics. Rudolf wanted to be a politician and be elected as president of a republic, but Franz Joseph was very absolutist. Eventually, for many reasons that are still unclear, Rudolf committed suicide with his lover. If he hadn't, Franz Ferdinand might not have been the heir.
Franz Joseph also disapproved of Franz Ferdinand's girlfriend Sophie as well. For this reason, Franz Ferdinand and Sophie are not buried at the Habsburg family crypt in Vienna (Capuchin crypt).
In the crypt, Franz Joseph is buried beside Sisi and Rudolf. There were many handwritten messages and flowers left for Sisi and Rudolf, but almost none for Franz Joseph.
His brother Maximilian I of Mexico is also buried there. Many Mexicans leave gifts for him (handwritten notes in Spanish, flowers, money), and there's even a few Mexican flags draped on his tomb, which is ironic because the flag is basically the republic flag (the one that executed him).
Maria-Theresia had the most opulent tomb there.

Franz Joseph was a basically decent man, but too much of a mama's boy to completely support his wife. I can't help but wonder if things would've been better between himself and Empress Elizabeth if he'd stood up to his mother and taken Sisi's side more often? This is a fabulous series! I've read a lot about the Hapsburgs, and I'm STILL learning new information about them! Thanks for these wonderful videos!

Another fabulous video. Idk how you do it. I love the history videos. You are my favorite as I adore your accent and everything French is my favorite. I also listen to tea time with Lindsay if I'm wanting to learn about someone you don't cover. I love Sisi and am sad she left her happy carefree natural life. I'm glad he was reasonably good to her. If you go to Albanian history records, you can find Dokuments that his mother was traveling through the Kozare village, and staid there for few days because of the horses sickness. That was approximately 10 months before young Joseph was born. It was well known that in Kozare the wealthiest family Chief had thick and big eyebrows, exactly as Franz Joseph. The Albanian origin of Austrian Kaiser is long disputed, but truth will find its way.
