I wouldn't say disapprove, more like "Good for you, but a bassist focuses on a different set of sounds which is not here.".

I bought a used Squire P bass for $130 back in the spring and I love it. Squire guitars aren’t anything to write home about, but their basses are solid. They’re my first recommendation for beginners.
I Have Two Squire Precisions 5 strings (it says standard on the headstock ) these are precision bodies with Jazz type Neck and Bridge Pickups made in INDONESIA and are really great Basses (I've made a couple of basses and have some high end and vintage Basses got a little experience there.
Got a Squier 60s Vibe Jazz in cream/white with tortoiseshell plate and it's one of the best axes I've ever owned. Agreed I also have a Warwick Rockbass, Epiphone Thunderbird and Ibanez SR300E so quite some competition. None of them are super professional but they serve my needs 😊
Would have another Ibanez SR300E in a heartbeat though, no problems

I had one. It sucked. There were some recent MM which weren’t good. Pickup fail and the neck didn’t stop moving around.

I've been playing bass since 1984, and I have to say I absolutely love the Squier Jazz Basses. I owned several basses over the years, several Fenders, a Music man, and an Ibanez. I've sold all of them over time except for the 83 Jazz bass I have owned since 84 and was my first bass. She'll never be sold and I will pass it on to my kids when my time is up. I have 7 other basses 4 are Squier Jazz basses to include the one he played, a Squier Precision bass, a Cort performer series fretless I've owned since 89 and was the second base I owned. The Squiers are great for gigs and novice players alike, great value for the money. In fact, the one he played and I own is my main "go-to" bass.

Yo the Ibanez GSR200 is a fantastic entry to mid level bass. It's got an active bass boost; give a beginner good lessons in tone variations and maintaining an active pickup config, and they really learn how to utilize it the more practice they get. It's a great bass to grow into, plays really comfortably, easy scale length, and honestly, the transparent finishes look dope as fuck. And yes, it sounds killer for the $200 tag, I've rehearsed, performed, and recorded with mine, HAS NOT LET ME DOWN and I've had it for exactly ten years now. Check them out if youre looking for a solid practice or recording bass, or if you've got a fledgling bassist on your hands and wanna give them an instrument they'll be playing for years before they feel the need to upgrade.
Jose Fuentes its actually a shite bass but one that can SOUND decent... ive worked on em, the wood is soft crud and the neck is weak and bad with tension, gotta run thin strings and adjust truss a lot. And the fretwork is subpar.
HOWEVER, toss in a Seymour Duncan APB Lightning Rod, and it'll sound bitchin

I have a lefty version of the Ibanez SR300E. It was my first bass and I still play it just as much as my other basses. I did get .115-.50 gauge strings put on it and tuned it to drop-c. It gets a really punchy growly tone, even without overdrive, distortion, or effects, and I love it!

I saw LEMMY AND BRUCE FOXTON playing the Ricks back in the day, so l saved up and bought one, second hand. COULD NOT AFFORD TO BUY ONE BRAND NEW. Yes. I play in the house. I am not a pro musician. Set them up right and you’ll always have the desire to jam to your favourite tunes. Go on people. Don’t just watch this vid and criticise his demo, go down to a shop and buy a bass of your choice. As you guys have stated, he’s not a bass player but YOU ARE. ENJOY THE THE TRIP TO THE GUITAR SHOP PEOPLE. Excellent video. Keep up the good work.

I dont turn 15 for another 4 months or so, and I have a part time job working the register at a McDonald's near my house. Some places may not hire untill your 16. It just depends on the specific location. It's hard to find a job at 14, but entirely possible.

I got the Jaguar SS as my last bass. I've played for years, including a beautiful Precision, and I wish the Jag SS had been around when I started. It is so comfortable and feels really great to play. Plus, the P pickups sound good.
the demo guy is a guitarist right? nothing against picks or similar play styles, but if you can please get bass players to do bass demos (and no hard feelings towards the chap in the video)
i am a bass player and i play a lot with pick too ... the whole myth "pick shouldnt be used while playing on bass" is bullshit ..
dude. my bass brother. you didn't catch my point. I think that playing with a pick is just another tool in the bass players arsenal its cool if you do it, but the guy who is doing a demo is a guitarist. as in he plays bass as a guitar (with guitar mannerisms). and shows some sounds that bass players might not use.
It's not about the pick play in this vid, but it really feels like he is a guitar player. He often is off rhytmically and plays with a lot of extra sounds, not muting the strings. When he isn't spot on on time he tends to accelerate, which renders his playing even messier...well it's certainly a playstyle, but this kind of leeway is more common amongst guitar players, to give some life to the music. In a bass player it sounds messy. Add a drummer to that and it won't feel right.
The guy seems cool though but I would have preferred demonstrations that were more solid regarding the playing (as well as with less distortion).

Glad he included the ibanez bass guitars in this. Some of my favorite basses are the ibanez 500 series. i have a 506 and 505 and they are monster basses. I also have a 400 fretless that's a tank as well. the 500's use these bad ass bartolini pickups that have monster tone.

Plenty of cheap kits don't suck, you just need to get good heads and tune them well. Most cheap kits have very poor hardware though, so I wouldn't wanna cheap out too much.

Squier VM 70s basses are awesome. Only problem with mine was that some of the screw holes weren't centered with hardware, so I removed the screws and filled them, then redrilled them more accurately. I also put black fender knobs on the pots because they look much nicer.
I am a beginner and got an excellent SR300E (brownish copper kinda) for $250. It's really nice to learn on. And it's beautiful.

I got a guitar and amp from them and (for the price) it's pretty good. Had a problem with the first one, sent it back and got a fixed one. Two years later, I've put it through some shit and it's still going strong!

My first bass was that Fender P-Bass, I didn’t like it starting out because it sounds better with a pick and Slap (I obviously started with finger style) so I got a schecter to help reinforce my pursuit of metal music. However now that I have expanded my skills in slap and pick, the Fender is OUTSTANDING. Definitely a must have, and if you wanna do something cool, have it set up with BEAD strings and you can make very low end melodic pieces on it. Jazz and funk are probably it’s peak genres.

I got an Ibanez TMB30 short scale bass you had previously done a video on and it's freakin awesome came almost perfectly setup. All I had to do was 1 full screw turn up on the low e saddle to get rid of a slight fret buzz and bingo its perfect.

Already own the Squier Modified Jazz bass and really enjoy it. It's fun to play, and yes you can get a lot of sounds out of it. I want to get the S.U.B. though. Very cool looking, and has the Music Man pedigree.

I've had the Squire 70's Jazz bass for quite a few years now. It's such an amazing bass that does so much right for such a great price!
Ibanez talman bass is another great bass for the price! The tmb 100 is an amazing beginner bass, and the 310 is the bass i currently play. For 300 us dollars in my opinion it cant be beat. Active eq, a p style pickup on the neck and a double jazz bass pickup at the bridge, along with a tap and series switch for switching from one jazz pickup to two. The tone control works incredibly well, both bass and treble. I plugged in, set the amp with all bass knobs at middle, and havent touched the amp since. The fit and finish is spectacular, far better than basses ive seen that cost nearly double. The bass shipped with a perfect low action for my play style, and came with a great gig bag! It was even in tune out of the box. I reccomend the ibanez tmb310 to anyone looking for a killer budget bass. Turquoise Sparkle is the color i have, and its absolutely gorgeous. The block inlays are simple but very well fitted and seamless. The whole fingerboard is inlayed into an acrylic (i believe) pocket, and i havent noticed and vibration dampening with that, as other basses have shown. For thr money, unbeatable in looks and sounds. Sounds good, even on a cheap amp.
Another great bass for small dosh amount, especially for beginners, is the Yamaha TRBX174. Great quality bass especially in the studio

+1 on the Hofner. I received a Hofner Club Bass for Christmas. It's a hollow body bass, constructed just like the Violin Bass you reviewed, but is single cutaway bass using Hofner's Club guitar body for a bass (it is similar to a Les Paul in shape). It's hearable, but not "loud" acoustically as you stated. I'm a guitar player and have forsaken my guitars since getting this Hofner. It's so comfortable, toneful, and just fun to play that I cannot wait to play and practice on it. These Ignition series basses by Hofner are a complete home run, and my $349 Hofner has absolutely perfect workmanship and finish. The intonation was even perfect, even on that clunky bridge Hofner uses, though I did have to set the action to my liking but have never received a guitar that the action was perfect for me from the factory. I enjoyed the list and your playing, unlike the critics in other comments. If anyone is a true bass player and wanting a range of basses in their arsenal like guitar players do, they should add a hollow, inexpensive, beautiful Hofner. Used ones abound on the interwebs, but it'll need a setup. You'll love the tones these things have, and if, like me, you don't like the violin bass' looks, get the single cutaway Club bass. I'm gushing about this bass because, even though you can get good cheaper basses than $350, the Hofner has fantastic quality and a tone all it's own. We're living in amazing times that we have such good choices in basses for not much money!

That's because us bass players are looking for a different set of sounds, and most of us try not to use the pick.
Sandip Biswas there are many ways to achieve different sounds on every instrument. Some musicians like to push themselves and dabble in different varieties of instruments (but I understand why bassists wouldn’t want a bunch of annoying guitarists in their way, lol)
pick, finger style and slap each have different tones, bassists most likely want to hear finger style and slap. I really don’t like the scratchy sound when playing with pick

@@mastniburek5386 Yeah definitely. But there are exceptions for metal. Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath and Steve Harris from Iron Maiden don't use a pick but use fingering techniques that provide a crunchy pop.
I have the Squier Jaguar in standard scale. It is one of my all time favorite basses.

I mainly started & learned my way around a bass on a Luna Tattoo.
I have got a few other sorta cheap basses since, Yamaha BB234, Dean Paramount, Squier, basically because I like the wood grain showing in the styles I picked and I just like them. But my long scale Luna Tattoo is still my favorite knock around & bass to play. I like the weight & balance. Lack of neck dive. The neck isn't too thick or too narrow. I do like the pick-ups on some other basses better and may replace them one day. I also prefere other bass's open tuners but the Luna's stay in tune and have lasted. I believe the parent company of Dean, Armadillo, purchased Luna just before they made mine several years ago, but they haven't changed much.
And the looks of them are very cool IMO. People always wanna feel the etching and say wow that's real. And they say those crescent moon inlays are cool. If I had my drathers they would be made elsewhere besides China. But anyway, I dig my $200 Luna.

The one I used to own would naturally overdrive some amps that had no gain control, which really pissed me off. The output was huge, even with the active EQ set flat!

The one I bought a few years back was a Troy Sanders signature (I didn't realize at the time since it was my second bass ever) active mustang bass. Absolutely outstanding instrument for the price.
Love mine too... it convinced me to buy the Fender Mustang as well and sell everything else. I run flats on the Mustang (after trying them out on the Jag) and round wounds on the Jaguar SS. Couldn’t be happier... and my back is happier too :-)
I think the Squier Affinity Bronco Bass deserves a spot here. It looks and sounds great. But I advise if you are playing jazzy, low tone songs, go for the Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Short Scale Bass. The Bronco is not mellow, and is a good bass for punk rock, alternative, emo, etc. It also isn't bad for mellow songs, but the Jaguar would be better.

I've got the Ibanez GSRM20 miKro bass in black. Paid around $170 for it brand new. Replaced pickups with Quarter Pounders (though the original pups sounded good) and replaced the cheap plastic tuning keys with Hip Shot tuners. I'm a guitar player who needed a bass to record with. Long scale bass's are uncomfortable for me to play because I pick near the bridge like a six string guitarist would, making it an awkward stretch for my left arm to fret the notes near the headstock and causing shoulder fatigue. This bass is really fun to play because of the short scale length and it sounds sooooo good through my Ampeg combo amp. It also stays in tune very well (with the Hip Shot tuners).

I have a ibanez sr400eqm and its is my favorite instrument I have ever owned! Plays like a dream, sounds amazing and I can get any tone I want out of it. It was deffinently money well spent.

I just bought a fender rumble 15w amp at a pawn shop for 55 bucks and it jams. I run my bass through a digitech bp80 and it sounds great. Perfect practice amp and you could play a smaller gig with it too.
On an overseas tour, I almost bought a hofner, similarly identical to the one shown, there were musicman, stingray brooms all over europe, could've gotten one of them anywhere. The reason I became interested in the hofner was I found it smaller, rounder and hollowerer than this kramer I had back in the world, military expression for home. I played in the store for a little but decided against it, additionally I didnt care for the store bass cabinets. I was only interested in the fishing rod, not the minows, meaning the cabinet. We didn't have rapport communication, storeperson where I was still learning the conversation language. I was still in a headstart program, only later I got a little better with the language barrier. I just don't advise a cheap sidewinder unless you don't care about harmonics, or sound muffling depth, but hey if you buy used tires don't expect to achieve the better quality of brand new tires, a huge difference, just keeping it 100.

I am torn between the Sterling and the Squire. Both look and sound amazing.
My first bass was an Ibanez GSRM20 miKro and I could get really nice tones out of it, plus it was so light that my back wouldn'r hurt after hours of playing.
Two weeks I bought a new Yamaha (yes, Yamaha) bass guitar, model RBX170Y, black. I was looking for an inexpensive bass because the one I've been playing is my 1992 Guild Pilot with EMG pickups. I've been playing that bass since the day I bought it in 1992. I own a violin bass, 70s Fender P-bass, I still have my 1983 Fender Elite II P-bass, I did own a 2013 American Standard Jazz, and in 1981 I even owned a Kramer bass with a forked aluminum neck and head.
I picked up the Yamaha and I was blown away at how easy the neck played, strings are low, perfectly straight neck, etc. I ended up picking it up for $300.00 and played it that night.
I am also looking at a Squier Vintage Modified P Bass FL - 3-Color Sunburst. It's in the same price range but I haven't been able to find one to play.
I've always owned long scale basses. However, short scale is perfect for young hands AND those guitar playing crossovers to bass that may have trouble reaching notes on long scale. Paul McCartney is the most famous example. His Hofner is short scale. Paul originally played guitar and piano. He switched to bass due to band need. Later as his skills on bass expanded from great to genius level he changed to Rickenbacker among other basses. Jack Bruce also favored a short scale Gibson bass.

I love cheap instruments that don't suck. I have a ibanez gsr 200 bass till 2005 for 210 euros and i was thinking to move on to a more expensive instrument when my skills grew but there is no need (they never grew, lol). It has a j-p pickup set up with volume to each pick up, tone and an active eq (one magic knob), it is so versatile, close the active and the tone use only the j pick up and you have a trombone sound like pastorious style, open both and the active to full and you have a slap machine. I ve played from metal (death, slayer etc), hip-hop, rock to ethnic fusioned with other styles with oud, violin, percusions, traditional wind instruments, in gigs and at the studio having good sound even with only a di. If i had the money i would buy something different like a good 5 string fretless but i will keep my beloved first 4 string for life

I play a Ibanez btb 1206e from 2006, I bought it for like 500 dollars used, it's the best bass I have ever played Imo. The used buying market with instruments is awesome.
My bridge pickup doesn't work and my tone control sometimes cuts the volume. I also have fret issues above the twelfth fret. Never buying a used bass ever again.
Yeah, man. I just recently picked up an old SR400FL, used, for $125 bucks, and I love it. I also recently stressed for weeks over whether to drop $1700 on an American-made G&L 5-string, or $500 on an Indonesian one, and I absolutely don't regret going with the less expensive one. Same pickups, nice piece of swamp ash, same feel, good quality control...where's the downside?

The Affinity Squier basses are amazing value! I bought a cheap Squier Affinity Series Precision Bass PJ and couldn't be happier! I think that Jaguar sounded good too :-)

The jackson js2 spectra is $200 and is one of the best basses I've ever played. It has active pickups bass boost and a pickup blender knob.

If Ibanez still offered their ATK line those are some pretty nice basses on a budget. Especially the ATK 300 which had a maple neck and a Bartolini Stringray style pick up. The ATK 200 got a rosewood neck and an Ibanez CAP pick up which seemed to be a recreation of the 300's pick up. Definitely worth looking at if you can find one for under $500. Actually sold a Fender P-Bass for the ATK 200.

It's not versatile at all in comparison to the basses on the market. Hence why all the true badass baassists who slap, and tap like the gods themselves use humbucker and pj or jj styles

The P Bass is one of the most loved basses by studio musicians and producers/engineers. I've even heard about studio people keeping P Basses on hand to give to bassists for recording.
I am a big Geddy Lee fan so I love the Squire Jazz bass. Nice sound the Fender Jazz bass. It sounds so LIVE when you hammer down on it, lol!

You put on a nice presentation. Good up-down picking style. One thing about the E.B. SUB pickup. Watch out for those sharp edges on the poles. If you are not careful, those edges will cut you. You won't see this issue on the US made models. But no doubt about it. For the cost, a SUB is a pretty sweet deal. I like the Ibanez you demonstrated. Can't lose on the lower cost Ibanez basses. THANKS!

I used to play bass for my high school band and I loved it. Honestly it was the best part about high school and I miss it so much. I learned how to play so many of my favorite songs on the bass they had there, might have been like the first bass in this video if I remember correctly. Such a nice bass, I was sad that I couldn't buy it from the school. It's been a while. I have a six string guitar but it's not the same. Hopefully I can walk into a guitar center and find something that won't axe my wallet.
