    Pirastro Eudoxa wins by a country mile on this particular violin. It sounds as if he is using a carbon fibre bow (Harsh and dry ) and his bow hair is flat on the string. Better if he plays on the edge. Good to compare all the strings on the same instrument . Good video but very hard work . It`s a difficult instrument . Well done .

    Thank you so much for making this!!! I really appreciate the effort you put in it. I think it would be better if you use a better mic, like that i would be able to hear more of these small differences i'm looking for :)

    The Larsen Tzigane demonstration doesn't do the strings justice. They really need their 3 days to settle. I bought the A end E and there is no strange choking or ringing sound, they are complex, sweet and have a decent projection. And the A and E are very nicely balanced.
    Edit: I visited your website a week ago and bought my strings based on the reviews and comments instead. That website is immensly helpful! Thanks for that!

      @@abc-ug5ym So far, I had no trouble in this respect. What may make itself felt a little is that the Pro Artes are somewhat thicker than other strings (they come in one gauge only), but I guess this doesn't matter so much unless - like me - you have slim and not-too-strong fingers. I tried Obligato medium instead, but on my violin I find the tone less pleasant.

    This video would be more helpful regarding comparing the sound of the strings is: 1) Don't play as long between strings. 2) like in the videos playing multiple music tracks, have a menu of sorts where the person can click to jump directly to a specific set of strings. And jump back and forth, instead of having to start from the beginning again. That Larsen E string sounds great.

    They sell two 5-string sets on electric violin shop (helicore & sensicore) and this helped a lot. Helicore seemed to have a more "electric" sort of sound to it, so i think that's what I'll go with. Would prefer sensicore for an acoustic 5-string though, assuming I was playing classical or something slower. (They are fairly warm sounding)

    Thank you for comparising all those string brands!!! It helped me a lot by my search for an E string. I find my E string too loud/high, so I was looking for a warmer sounding string. I have focussed by listennig to you on all the E strings differences and some brands I found clearly warmer on my ear: d'addario kaplan amo, Warchal Brilliant, warchal Amber. Is that familiair to you? Is there a big chance that these strings also will sound on my violin warmer and less loud? I have an old german violin.

    I have tried modifying other E strings like Warchal Amber: it works fine on plain steel strings, getting rid of the open E wolf note when played together with a stopped A string while sounding sweeter than the Alu wound E strings I was using before - don't try it with tin plated E and I imagine it wouldn't work on a gold E either - I want to compare my efforts to the Warchel, but it hasn't arrived yet...

    • @ViolinStringReview
      @ViolinStringReview  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brayan Crespo The Amo and Vivo feel like a soloist string to us. Very big and bold sound! The Vivo set is extremely loud and quite bright (great for projecting over an orchestra). Amo is a bit more controlled and although considered the "warmer" of the two still has a soloistic tone. Richard Ebdon Hi Richard, I would say that the Spirit strings are just a tad brighter than the Pro Arté strings. Pro Arté seems to be a bit more mellow, especially on the low end and the Spirit projects a bit more.

    So I guess the human mind can recognize over 2000 instruments, even if they're all playing middle C at 440 Hertz. Sonically. However on paper, then we can't! Even extreme timbre differences look " almost the same " on paper!
    Even though the difference is easy (sonically) like A/B/C/D/E all sound different here, and we can use this video as a reference point to locate which violin string x player is using in a solo performance (sometimes, if they're using one of these strings), ...I think some people can't hear the difference, i.e. " tone deaf ", common. Just as common as color blindness.
    This is a cool demonstration of violin strings, " sub-instruments ".
    I also watched a violin solo performance and located that she was playing the Obligato G violin string. Maybe an A.I. software can do that later, although just sayin', we can do 'anything' an A.I. software can including identifying 50 violin strings via practice. The human mind is a 'software' which can attain x/y/z via practice.

    Hi, could you give your opinion on which A string you think is best, in terms of sound, because I would like a smooth transition from my Eudoxa gut G and D to my A string, I'm wondering which A string has the perfect balance of being the connection between the lower and higher end of the violin. It would be superb if you could also tell me which 'combination' of violin strings is your favorite. Thank you!

    • @ViolinStringReview
      @ViolinStringReview  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not have a favorite since I am constantly changing them. The Eudoxa would be the smoothest transition but if you are looking for something that connects to the E more you might want to try a metal E. Warchal makes a "Russian Style A" that is made to connect the E a bit more.

    @outerlimitsurvey 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the comparison. Personally I would have liked to year you play a cadenza on each string instead of scales. My daughter has been doing Suzuki violin since she was little and everyone said to get Dominant strings and be done with it. Lately she has been playing Celtic fiddle. I understand steel core strings like Helicore and more popular among fiddlers than composite core strings like Dominant. I like the sound of Helicore but I was curious about how they play. Celtic music has a lot of fast ornimentation. Would you say Helicore play faster than Dominants?

    • @ViolinStringReview
      @ViolinStringReview  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Helicore will definitely play faster than a Dominant. It is a steel rope core and is still quite flexible. If you want a very fast response than something that is a solid steel core would be even better but you would have to fight with quite a bright tone that usually comes with solid steel core strings.

    • @fpires7
      @fpires7 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Al Dente why cadenza? The properties of the strings are better perceived while playing scales slowly while going through the whole tonal range. At least to figure out what the author actually measured (clean/complex, brighter/warm).

      +CKE142B yes, those all can be a factor. I was just going over the slight sound difference. I am slowly adding a video of the "spotlight" reviews I have done in the past on the ViolinStringReview.com website. For more detail I would check there until I get more detailed videos up. :)

    Thanks for the time and expertise; well done! What difference is there between a heavy gauge string versus a medium gauge? Would you consider making a video to illustrate this difference? Thanks again

      @ViolinStringReview  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I apologize for the late reply. I planned on making a video and then I just got too busy with other things. The Heavy gauge will be a bit louder and can actually feel a bit less tinny. The problem is that playing the string may take a bit more force and not as easy to get the subtle nuances that you might get from a lower gauge string. I talk about gauges a bit more on the guides section of ViolinStringReview.com

      +Muhammad Aresh I get what you mean...
      What I can tell:
      - Obligato sounds warmer (fuller) than Pro Arte.
      - Eudoxa has a different kind of warmness to Evah Pirazzi.
      The others sound too similar to me..

    Larson strings and nylon core tend to make your violin buzz as if you have a loose glue seem at one of your bouts or something on your tail piece is loose and rattling-and buzzing. Please don't tell me your using a fiber bow in this demo, sheesh!

    In my opinion it's better to compare strings with their durability , playability, and response time when bowing not how they sound because there are many factors like bridge, sound post place and the violinist...that are responsible for the sound. Even the room you play ... if you listen this with eyes closed can't recognize which is which.

    You just saved me a butt load of money and hassles on which violin strings to buy. I must have watched this 5x with my eyes closed and came to the conclusion they pretty much all sounded the same. Most people including my self, unless you're a violin snob will notice any difference when listening . It's the player not the strings that give it its sound. Cheaper strings for me from now on .

      I have to agree with BOTH of you. As a violin player of two years..I hear little difference between the strings. But I'm SURE if you were an advanced player or a professional you would notice the difference. I use Obligato, but in my opinion they are quite pricey for an amateur like myself. Great review. Thanks!

      There's a much larger gap in playing characteristics between strings than the gap in sound produced- that's why it makes such a difference to many who play regularly.

      In my experience, the most distinctive feel & sound came from Larsen Tzigane and Evah Pirazzi, but I usually go between helicores and infield reds, so sometimes distinctive isn't ideal.
