    Patch 11 (E.PIANO 1)on the infamous Yamaha DX7 is widely considered one of the most popular factory patches in history, with the DX7 being used by artists such as Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, The Cure to Depeche Mode and Queen to only name a few and is featured in almost every ballad from the 80ies.
    The legendary E. Piano 1 is played via Velocity Sensitive keys on the DX7, which plays back different amounts of FM Modulation as you press down harder.
    It's sound has been copied, recreated and emulated thousands of times and has evolved into the more modern "DX7 Rhodes sound" and "Fulltines" with it's sharper high frequencies but there is still something about that smooth original DX7 Patch 11 sound.

    There are many synths that have memorable patches. The DX-7 Electric Piano is THE most definitive sound of the 80s that I still use today. The sound is Timeless. There have been clones from different brands over the last 40 years that tried to duplicate the sound, but nothing beats the real, authentic DX-7 El. Piano.

      there are some that nail the sound but that's entirely because they're direct patch-compatible clones of the dx7

    I wish there were more videos just playing beautiful chord progressions on these synths. Even as a lifelong 80s nerd who watched the rebirth of this music, I much much prefer it to the exhausting/exaggerated retrowave tracks. This is perfect.

    David Foster likes this. As a kid who took piano lessons and a dad that wasn’t around much, I was exposed to endless amounts of 80’s ballads by guys like Peter Cetera, Whitney etc. This sound is ingrained in my soul. One of the most nostalgic tones to ever exist.

    • @TheGrelots
      @TheGrelots 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Buy a sy77, still cheap and a huge upgrade. The presets suck which I think is why nobody is really buying them but you get multiple waveform instead of just sines, 16 parts multitimbrality, effects, a filter, a more usable interface, more patch storage, a floppy disk reader and also awm, with old samples that leave to be desired but for a house piano sound or early digital pads why not. It’s basically a montage 30 years early.

    The only VSti that came close to nailing the DX7 sound is the Native Instrument FM7 v1.02 the old version from the 2000’s. Still using that version all these years it still works the standalone and the Vsti version. No one can deny the power of this epiano sound it’s iconic.

      I have a DX7 and a TX7 that I am currently using to play with DX7 patches. They had an A and B part and I pan each synth left and right. It makes a nice stereo effect.

    • @Keyboardman88
      @Keyboardman88 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tmccormick892 I should have made myself a little more clear. First i had the DX/TX7 combination which I put through a Castle Phaser II via a WYE cable. My Castle II had the stereo out option. When I got the DX5, it had the option of either mono, or individual outputs for the two synth engines. I ran that mono through the Castle III and had stereo out.

    In my humble subjective opinion, there is something uniquely beautiful about this sound. While it will forever be an "80s sound" in my mind, it's quite versatile and timeless as well. This wasn't the default sound of a DX7 that you'd get when you switched the instrument on, and I wouldn't say that this was the most commonly used sound from that instrument either (the synth brass was pretty common too, though it didn't sound that different from other synths of the time). But if someone asked me to imagine the "sound of a DX7", this is what my mind will go straight to. It's essentially an algorithm; a simple mathematical formula. It's not a sample, nor is it similar enough to the Rhodes to call it a direct copycat. The Arturia DX7 emulator plugin actually calls this a "mallet" preset. But either way, there's something special about this bright but mellow patch. I still hear it in pop songs from time to time.
