Welcome to White Palace! To your right and left, above and beneath you can see the Pale King's majestic buzzsaw collection! Historians estimate that 2/3 of Hallownest budget were used to buy buzzsaws, since they are, of course, a necessity purchase. But all jokes aside, you're doing great for a first time inside White Palace. Really great, actually!
@@drsophiedarling That's the real lore of why you need the Dream Nail to reach the palace, clearly that one dude was just so traumatized by the buzzsaws that the entire palace was transported into his nightmares. 😜
Really don't feel bad about the palace. I spent DAYS in that palace. Actual DAYS. But finishing it was one of my biggest achievements in gaming and every time I feel like rage quitting in other games I say to myself, "If I could beat White Palace, I could beat this." You can do it!
What can one say about White Palace that hasn't already been said? "Shit!" "Damnit!" "What the hell!" and now, "ARE YOU TAKING THE ABSOLUTE PISS?" It's like if a masterpiece of a movie had a weird musical interlude in the middle of it. Except the music is buzzsaws. And the actors are buzzsaws. And the scenery is buzzsaws. EDIT: oh thank god you landed on hiveblood, it's an absolute godsend here
The geo cache in the King’s Station is actually one of their best trolls, I think. Everyone sees the door and tries to figure out how to open it until they give up. If there just wasn’t a door, I think people would solve it way sooner, because you would be looking more closely at a way to get in. The door that never opens is the perfect sleight of hand. And once you do find it, you feel like an idiot.
Literally spent MONTHS wondering how to get that open. Mentioned that to my brother, he was like, yeah, that door doesn't open, you have to go up from below. Me: ???
Sharp shadow was screwing you over a bit in the palace, it increases the distance of your dashes of your dashes Hive blood is quite good there, but there’s another charm you don’t have that is quite useful in the palace too, helps with healing. It’s behind a breakable wall in Crystal Peaks, one of the miners are digging away at said wall
"All furniture in White Palace was covered with white sheets, similar to how people in the real world cover their furniture while away on long trips. The palace's also completely covered with thorns and buzzsaws, similar to how people in the real world cover their houses with thorns and buzzsaws" (c) mossbag
Sophi: This is pain! Epic foreshadowing. The hollow knight community: you have no idea what pain is..... You did so well! And completed it so fast. Very well done. Our little Sophi Knight is platforming like she's never platformed before
About C-Dash. You can cancel it only if it's not fully charged, just by releasing the button. After that, the best chance you get is to try and cancel it mid flight as soon as possible. You can try spamming C-Dash button to stay on a same place on a wall without locking yourself in awrong position.
1:03:57 The blue charm actually make the health regain twice as long so i recommend removing them and only keep Hiveblood Grubsong is also a good bonus to gain back Soul when hit
Adding fragile heart would give you a couple more masks that can be changed into blue life blood, which can give you enough when paired with the other lifeblood charms
White palace is really difficult. You're doing very well for a first playthrough! I suggest not using joni's blessing. Instead, use hiveblood and grubsong. Without joni's blessing, hiveblood regenerates twice as fast, so it won't be as frustrating to wait for, and you can also heal with the soul you get from grubsong. You can also dream nail the white palace inhabitants for soul whenever you see them. Also, it's true that once your c-dash is "complete", you can't cancel it, but you can start a c-dash on the wall and then release the button before it's "complete" to cancel it before it starts. This can be used repeatedly to stall on a wall almost indefinitely. Another tip is to add Mark of Pride and/or Longnail to get more nail length for easier pogo-ing. I hope this helps, if you haven't already finished white palace yet! It's good to take care of yourself and take breaks when you get frustrated! This can be a frustrating game, but you are doing really well! Everytime I've heard you say something like "I'm bad at this part," it's been things that are objectively difficult in he game, it's not just you being bad. White palace is objectively difficult! Good luck!
Mark of Pride/Longnail can be a curse for some parts of the White Palace - some of the pogoing sections seem calibrated for the normal nail and longer nails can bounce you too far. (So if you’re struggling with part of the Palace and using one of these charms, switching it out is something to try.)
Sophie: I feel like I've gotten worse at platforming Me, having seen the title/thumbnail: oh no Sophie: enters White Palace while wearing sharp shadow me: OH NO Anyway congrats on your trial by buzzsaw. Sharp Shadow is actually one of my fav charms, but it slightly lengthens your shade dash, and thus is capable of ruining your life faster than nearly anything else in precision platforming heavy sections like White Palace and Queen's Gardens. I'm glad you figured out what a perfect fit for WP hiveblood is, I almost never use that charm outside white palace but inside it's a genuine lifesaver.
@@drsophiedarling lol I figured maybe you hadn't, which is part of why I mentioned. Iirc it lengthens your dash by about 20%, which can be very nice... just in other places lol.
I had my boyfriend, veteran of hollow knight, do some sections of the white palace for me, so don't be ashamed of feeling frustrated! It's really hard. There are some shortcuts that you would probably only discover if you watched a walkthrough, and that really helped me. I also understand wanting to do everything blind though!
@@drsophiedarling I felt so heartbroken for you T_T you had the right idea from the start tho! This lifeblood door saga deserves its own short, I think it would be super funny, if I may say so xD
I don't think I'd have made it through White palace if I hadn't played Celeste not long before Hollow Knight :D Highly recommend Celeste btw, it really helped me stop taking failure so hard! I don't think you have nearly as much difficulty with that as I used to or anything, but Celeste is amazing regardless :P
Congratulations on beating the White Defender! I hope you noticed more familiar silhouttes in the background this time. Also this is another dream boss like Zote, where you get a little bit of lore after defeating him several times.
@@drsophiedarlingThere is really nice surprise if u beat White defender 5 times. I doubt you will bother tho, he deals one more mask of damage everytime (yes, up to 5)
It has been a blast watching you discover more and more of Hallownest. As a veteran Metroidvania/platformer, I have to say, your so called “lack of platforming skill” is about retired. I daresay after you complete the white palace and do the flower quest, you’ll be about a bloody master!
It's not the White Palace if you aren't swearing every 5 seconds and dying constantly. Look, from time to time, some first-time Hollow Knight player comes along and cruises through the White Palace, just makes it look stupidly easy. Sure, it's 100% impressive and jaw dropping when that happens but we also hate those people and secretly wish they hit a buzzsaw at the last moment Jokes, jokes You did very well! And you cleared the first two sections faster than I did if it's any consolation. Perfectly normal to rage quit too if you ever get to that point. Some parts of this game just seem designed specifically to drive us insane!
Aw thank you Alex!! Yeah, I think that final buzz situation and then my headphones dying just TIPPED ME but I'm ready to get back at it again on Saturday!
18:30 "i didn't want to have to count." i wish i could tell you i have a shred of human empathy or kindness at all but lol, oh my god lol bloody hell though. that was some incredible progress at the end - imagine day one "died to Gruz Mother because rhythms are hard" Sophie seeing that!
Oh love, felt your pain at the last minutes of the video. Relax a bit and go to your happy place, you can continue when you are better. At least you got to the 3rd floor you are so close now. Hang in there 💪
Oh I didn't rage quit so I'll absolutely go back! I just didn't want to film another 2 hour vid and was a natural stopping point coupled with my headphones dying hahaha!!
Hey Sophie, I don't usually comment often, but I have been watching every single one of your videos as soon as they come and they have really made my recent few weeks/months brighter since I've been studying for an university entrance test for quite a while, so I just wanted to say I really appreciate your gameplays :)
I'm so sorry Sophie! I laughed hysterically for like five minutes over the blue lifeblood part and you were one off. Like full belly laughed. I know the pain, yet it was still funny to see. Ahh, yes. The White Palace. Hell on earth. My first play though I was in there for days. It was horrible. But you did great! You really did.
Just want to say that it is good to remember that you can pogo of all the buzzsaws and spikes. This could have helped you to save yourself some nerves in that painful section near the end of the video. That buzzsaw sticking out of the wall is actually a trap and a safety net 2-in-1 package.
Oh man. What an episode! I have so many thoughts bear with me. 1) I thought hive charm regenerated all your health not just the one. now I realize why you haven't used it more. 2) I can't figure out what the blessing charm was doing for you. It turned all your health to life blood but its not like it made it extra hard to loose it. I was just confused by that. 3) today I learned a quiet Sophie is a raging Sophie. That's fierce! Honestly, I thought you did so well. You're platforming was on point most of the run. I was really impressed. Thanks for the hard work!
It takes so long to heal :( It's such a cool concept but I am v impatient!! So with the charm - I think mentally I was like "MORE MASKS" but then got most of the way through and went "BUT CAN'T HEAL" and realise I shot myself in the foot haha!! I am not a screamer. I'm a silent seether!!
Came to watch Sophie lose her mind. Was not disappointed. Congrats on getting through all that you did in a single episode. I dont think I was patient enough to do it in a single sitting.
The best thing about playing Hollow Knight is failing to make it up the little platforms in the beginning tutorial area... then 80 hours later doing pogo resets of your 2nd jump and air dashes off enemies and buzz saws in the White Palace. The game is SO good at teaching you more numerous and difficult abilities as you progress. Seriously, watch the first 15 minutes of your first playthrough any time you're feeling like you've hit a wall. You'll see how far you've come and know how far you CAN go, still.
I 1000% agree with this! The growth you'll see when playing this game... I have learned incredibly much from it too. I'm literally thankful for this game for all it taught me. It's easy to forget where we came from, how much we progressed, so yes that is a great idea!
Having sharp shadow equipped at the start made a lot of the platforming harder than it needed to be, because the charm increases dash length and the platforming was designed with regular dash length in mind. There is also a super secret area in the white palace with even harder platforming if you ever want a challenge.
I've had quite a few people mention Path of Pain so I know it's existence haha!! I still don't know what it entails other than 'pain' so IT'LL BE FUN I GUESS!!
Ahhh, White Palace, the war flashbacks are real. I'm sure we all perked up and laughed when we first heard you say "this is pain" hahaha. Watching this while having cramps was NOT a good idea because my stomach just did a sympathetic clench every time you died. Also! I was SO HAPPY when I saw you put on Hiveblood because that was my exact strat for White Place lol. Made the whole thing really slow, but at least doable for me.
That moment at 18:39 when you just shut down and lost it sent me HAHAHAHA I know the feeling so well when I first got there and combined the two charms only to be short 1 🤣🤣
This game trolls so very well xD The blue charm puzzle had me in tears, thank you Sophie :') I never knew you could juggle White Defender! :0 Well done hanging on to your sanity in the White Palace, even if you love plateforming it's incredibly challenging. Love your playthrough, will watch Ori too ^^
Aaah, the infamous White Palace and the Path of PAIN. You definitely felt it 😂😂 Don't worry you will get it, it just takes time and it is definitely worth it. Look for hidden places!
I know you’re already hours past this 56:28 , but one of the things holding you back at this point is sharp shadow. It doesn’t mention it in the description, but it lengthens your dash a bit as well as making you cause damage. It breaks your muscle memory! (Skimming the comments everyone had already said Hiveblood is your friend, but +1 to that from me too!) You got this!! 😊
Exactly what I was thinking! Sharp shadow messes with your dash, it's a menace, sadly a huge disadvantage here. That charm in general has never really been my thing, in any part of the game, although I do see its perks of course.
0:48 "It's my favourite bench. No-one will ever take this bench away from me." Oh god, can you imagine if the infection spreads again and that bench becomes unusable like some parts of the Crossroads. D:
Hey! Just wanted to come here, and tell you that you are doing great, hang in there ! We've all been there, and yes we got frustrated too at times and that most of us including myself were not able to do white palace in one go either, and in fact many of us struggled a lot at it, even more than you are!! In fact you are way better than many players in this game! But its doable and you have already done most of the hard part of it ! So you'll definitely manage to finish it no worries you are not far off ! As you saw for yourself some charms work better than others to improve success rate in platforming areas. While the blue masks can give some longevity its very minor compared to actual healing with grubsong. And as you saw hiveblood regeneration is great for white palace. But let me give at least one good hint, about sharp shadow the charm that you have started using. Its unfortunate, but the design on this one, is a bit questionable, many people are not aware of this but it makes the dash distance 40% longer, which can mess you up BIGTIME on many challenges in this game including some parts of white palace. (and yes it did mess you up in a few sections I noticed and its not your fault so take solace in that knowledge! ) Its because the design of the game and platform sections were made with normal dash distance in mind. Not the sharp shadow one. So its hard for me to recommend it for a lot of these areas! Cheers and no worries you are doing absolutely great! PS: If people tell you to do an optional secret masochistic challenge in white palace in the future, please do yourself a favor and refuse that offer, it will save you your sanity above all and your well-being, its beyond ridiculous and I never recommend it to players that at the end of the day just want to enjoy the game ! You would thank me for this if you knew what it is!
Thank you lovely!! Yeah, I realised that I shot myself in the foot a little with the blue masks. I was more focusing on having the additional masks but it began to hit me like "not being able to heal is a pain" so I'll definitely remove that next time!! As for Sharp Shadow?! Way to force myself to play this on hard mode without realising haha!!
For some reason Sharp Shadow increases the length of your dash, however White Palace is designed with the regular dash length in mind, so you'd accidentally been playing on hard mode for the first few rooms. ❤ (Also, Joni's Blessing makes Hiveblood take longer to regenerate, but Hiveblood+Grubsong gives infinite healing)
@@drsophiedarling Yeah there's a few sneaky charm effects and secret combos the game doesn't tell you about. A good one for combat is Grubsong+Weaversong, for some reason it gives you soul every time the spiderlings attack, VERY useful for certain fights.
Fragile heart with the rest of the lifeblood charms would help you out with that door. Also you should also wear one of the fragile charms when you talk to that big lady with the Grimm Troupe if you haven't already.
If you want to know for canceling and using Crystal Dash: (!!! Do not proceed if you don't want to know !!!) You can't cancel it when you're fully charged, BUT you CAN cancel it BEFORE you're fully charged, meaning you can continuously and repeatedly tap the button to readjust yourself on the wall, then hold the button when you're done readjusting. If you read this, I hope it helps.
I think the worst part of the white palace/path of pain, is that the music is so beautiful and relaxing and u feel like the game is flogging u . Like pls, it's so beautiful here, why do u hate me. Why were u like this , pale king.
I can't wait to watch all of this one, Sophie! These end game bosses and platform sections are no joke but you can do it! We believe in you. The pain is worth the payoff in the end! (So gang, 1:42:45 ... are we going to tell her?)
@@asaeed86 oh I know but to be fair there's a lot of extra content to this game that isn't required and could distract someone. Luckily PoP can be accessed at any time. I saved it for while I was in God Home 🤣 apparently I like suffering.
Haven't finished the video yet but didn't want to forget - there's more lore from Seer in Resting Grounds if you keep talking to her. Loving the series!
The White Palace is a real test of patients and precision that came out of nowhere and left a lot of players really frustrated. We all feel your pain, Sophie. Don't be harsh on yourself, you did great for your first encounter with this place. And figured out one of the best charm combos pretty fast. But you might want to switch that one charme that just gives you two blue masks. Because they are not affected by hive blood and don't regenerate. I believe you can finish it next time with no problem! Just keep calm, don't rush and remember "explore the room before picking up the item".
You did well honestly. White Palace is tricky. My fav combo for it is Grubsong + Hiveblood. And beating White Defender is cool. Good job there. Next is a semi-spoiler, so ignore the rest of my comment if you wish. Spoilers below if your sure you want to know There is an even harder version called 'The Path of Pain' hidden inside White Palace. And after trying for 2 hours and not even reaching the first checkpoint I gave up lol. You might want to skip that particular secret. And just look up the lore hidden away at the end of it.
I see that you did it in the next video, but welcome to one of the hardest parts in the entire game. i always recommend for the first time going through white palace to watch a guide, but you did amazing in this one. You literally got so far on your own merit and that is genuinely praise worthy when it comes to not only your first time playing this game but also your first time going through this buzzsaw hell
You really did great in the White Palace! Although I absolutely understand that your mood suffered. I rage quit in my first playthrough at some point in the Palace and didn't continue the game for nearly three months because I was convinced there was no way I would ever get it. Strangely enough, the White Palace is now one of my favorite parts of a new playthrough. 😅 It's insane, for sure, but although fun and challenging.
Finally recovered from my covid enough to catch up! I don't understand why people keep giving you flack for the strangest reasons. Your navigation skills always get you where you need to go- and I'm still not over people calling you mean somehow. Has me wondering if that's a cultural thing because you're always so polite and kind and show people so much grace. And even when you dislike something you default to 'it's not for me' which is just so mild. And welcome to the frustration and slow maddening, Team Cherry knew what they were doing haha. And even with the blue health puzzle. You are not alone x'D Anyway- wonderful episode as always. I'm incredibly excited for the bits coming up for you!
18:30 Thank you for making me actually lol. Edit: ok congrats for everything! Frustrating? Obviously, but you owned that Palace actually really fast. You aren't bad at platforming, you just don't enjoy it and so you haven't played games focused on this, thus your platforming 'skills' don't show up quickly. It's normal, but you figured a lot of things out in a matter of what, 1 hour? Impressive, congratulations! Hiveblood, taking off Shade charm, pogoing on the saws (gonna be honest, I thought you'd do that quicker, but I get how the 'oh sht hard platforming' feeling didn't help in this regard. Only thing that was not great was taking Joni's, as healing is definitely better with all the sources of soul you get, but it was by no means the worst idea. WARNING! SLIGHT MECHANICAL(?) (Crystal Dash) SPOILERS BELOW Considering you're pretty late game and you visited White Palace, I think it's about time you knew that you can . . . . . . . . . . . 1) tap the Crystal Dash button to keep in place on walls without readying the dash. Like, just quickly tap it, it cancels the slide. Just don't hold it long enough that the Crystal Dash charges 2) You can stop the dash AFTER you start actually dashing, but I forgot exactly how, sorry (been a while since I played the game and I did it on keyboard anyway). I think just jump?
Yeah, I wasn't really thinking when I put on Joni as I was more like "OH YAY MORE MASKS" but it was only when I started to hit that area where I was stuck that I realised I'd shot myself in the foot for not being able to heal. With the poging - I thought I would be able to time it with crystal dash and then quickly stop to pogo but yeah just didn't work. Trial and error really! :D Thank you for the tips on how to cancel Crystal Dash! I'll have to give them a go!
The white palace truly is a painful first experience, but it's also such a great help when it comes to movement after beating it (especially with pogo-ing stuff with the nail) As a matter of fact: my first white palace took me nearly an hour and a half of pure grinding, while the second and third one took about 10 minutes Congrats on making it this far though !! The hardest part is done :)
honestly the hardest part for me is that damned hallway at the 1:24:00 area because it's just walking and i can never. do. it lmfaooo. you did great :D
This part of the game is BRUTAL and i considered giving up. You're a way more competent player than I am, and I did it, so I have full confidence in you. I second hiveblood (no lifeblood/Joni's) plus grubsong as S tier white palace charms. The pain....
honestly, not a bad first attempt at white palace at all so far, ive seen people take significantly longer than you have to get to the point you stopped at. btw, if you want to see the hardest platforming challenge the game has to offer, break the left wall in that room you stopped at. the wall wont disappear, but you can walk through, its elevated off the ground a bit. i definitely dont recommend putting yourself through it unless youre really determined to have the bragging rights. i usually try to avoid spoilers, but with how difficult and unforgiving it is, i think its best for you to be aware of what youre getting into with the the path if you choose to give it a shot, as it doesnt have any in-game reward at the end aside from a tiny piece of lore that you might not even fully understand yet. as fun as watching people get mad can be, i really dont want you to find it and try it without knowing what youre getting into, experience a quite large amount of frustration, and have it leave a sour taste in your mouth.
Just so you (if you didnt realised it already) the sharp shadow charm makes your dash longer, so using it in the white palace can be a bit trick until you get comfortable with the range
0:45 "my favourite bench". Such a benchist. All benches are equal! 18:43 Sophie seems more upset about the missing lifeblood than seeing the banker again. I remember a lifetime ago when she tried not to swear :D 45:00 "cause I don't know what awaits". Pain. Pure, 100%, unfiltered pain. Soul won't heal that. 52:22 "The platforming just gets 10 times harder". Good news for you! There's a "White Palace 2.0" inside the White Palace, 100 times harder, in case you haven't gotten your dose of rages some day. 59:36 "How does anyone do this" Well.. Silksong still hasn't come out. 1:21:37 "What is this place" Welcome to the White Palace. Where buzzsaws are born. Where Team Cherry implicitly admit they are addicted to pain. 1:28:48 "Who thought this was a good id". The Pale King. BTW you should watch "Hollow Knight Path of Pain speedrun" sometimes (there's no spoiler) to see how badly it gets, if you don't want to attempt it.
1:23:50 This. THIS DAMN SPOT. Idk why this was the hardest part of White Palace for me, but I just could not get down the precision of walking in between them. You seemed to catch on more quickly than I did. I felt your pain this whole video though!
Apparently Hiveblood and grubsong are a favored build for white palace. You can still heal normally without Joni's blessing and you will only need to use hiveblood to heal when running out od soul.
Oh, hey, I heard you like listening to the metallic grinding of countless saws for hours on end. Ugh, the White Palace. My first trip through, I struggled so hard and definitely rage quit about halfway through. I did it again recently and it went better (since I knew the path and how to prepare), but it wasn't pleasant by any means. You've almost made it to the end (or maybe you've already filmed the next part and finished)!
I sympathize with getting frustrated in the White Palace. I did too. I'm not sure if you've filmed any more by now, but a tip: Due to how big of a swing the nail actually does, sometimes you can pogo off of spikes/saws that aren't directly beneath you but are just to the side of you a little.
Sophie, you have some unfinished business with the fountain in the ancient basin. Also, you do have 3rd charm that increases your health...So you could have gotten the blue door without looking for life blood xD
You are doing great on white palace ! I am loving the patience (-: Below are some spoiler-free ideas on what to do next if you want them ! The grimm quest can be a little long/repetitive but it is quite chill I think (and really worth doing !), getting started on that could be a nice break after white palace ? You are not missing anything important so you can continue playing blind and get some other endings, but after that if you want to go for 112% I think it is better to look up where the last hidden bits are, or explicitely ask for hints/directions. Also I second making a reaction to mossbag's video when you think you are done with the blind part of your playthrough (you figured lots of lore points yourself, it was super cool !) The other DLC (Godseeker) is very well hidden (I had to look it up) and is also very difficult and grindy, definetily a defferent atmosphere than the main game, and needs a patient mindset. You should totally go for it if you have the patience (I found it very rewarding), but I am not sure it would suit the video format, as it can be a bit repetitive and there is not much story-wise. That said, it would make for really fun streams I think ! (until you are fed up with it's bullshit difficulty haha)
I will be attempting to do 112% but if I hit a wall with HK then I'll happily move on and maybe save some of the longer, more repetitive parts for a video once a week or, as you said, a steam!
You're doing great! Nearly at the end. Something to try is to djump before a dash, activating the dash on the way down. I found the jump made it easier to gague when to dash? Not sure why, maybe you move slower? Personally I really enjoied the White Palace and PoP, but to each their own. Hated that spike dash with the giant hopper in kingdom's edge tho... Also don't forget about the wishing well, you should be fine with the amount you have access to now :)
"This had better be enough or I'm going to scream" *me, having done the math and knowing you are going to be 1 off* "Well, this'll be good." Actually, if you equipped fragile heart the 2 masks it gives get converted to lifeblood by joni's blessing and you would have had more than enough. That's a way to do it without requiring you to have maxed out masks or gathering lifeblood from elsewhere. Dung Defender, like so many things in Hollow Knight, is lovable, charming, funny, but underneath all of it very sad. You can finish his sidequest by beating him 5 times, but he gains an extra mask of damage each time so it's pretty hard. I've yet to actually do it, since it's a fight I'm just not very good at, but watching this makes me feel like I should give it another go soon. Also, it seems like you've been informed that fragile charms don't break in dream fights. I don't know exactly what you've heard, so I'll fully clarify just in case: fragile charms break whenever your death leaves behind a shade. This includes all bosses you fight in dreams with 1 (arguable) exception as well as the entirety of the Godhome DLC and the White Palace. With the retainers in the white palace: remember, you have the King's Brand. You aren't THE king, but the brand does mark you as the king of hallownest. It's not actually the first time a character has reacted to the brand by thinking you are the king. But who cares about little bits of silly lore like that nonsense, WELCOME TO BUZZSAW HELL. The White Palace is the game saying, "So you want to reach the true ending, huh? Well, then, imma need you to prove your worth by getting real damn good at precise platforming." I'm very fond of the White Palace, even though it had my crying tears of blood getting through it on my first playthrough. The ambiance of a beautiful palace with serene music combined with the constant drone of the buzzsaws is very....unique, but it's interesting and memorable. The platforming challenges are brutal, but the game's super precise controls mean its fair, and completing it is both super rewarding and will absolutely level up your platforming skills. There are also a TON of creative skips you can do as well as numerous secrets and hidden passages for the eagle eyed and inquisitive, so your ingenuity can be rewarded just as much as your mechanical skill. Unfortunately, you fell into the exact same trap I did by using the lifeblood charms. The logic of "it'll give me more mistakes" makes sense, until you realize how much soul you can actually gather, both through grubsong and soul sources the palace itself provides for you, and in the end you make things MUCH harder on yourself. Hiveblood plus grubsong, without having joni's blessing, will allow for infinite sustain so long as you have the patience to wait for the hiveblood regen. HOWEVER, I am going to HIGHLY recommend finding the Deep Focus charm instead of Hiveblood. Deep Focus + Grubsong gives you nearly infinite sustain (you can heal off over 90% of the damage you take) without the pain in the ass of having to wait for Hiveblood after every attempt. It removes SO much frustration from the palace when you don't have to worry about dying and don't have to wait for stupid Hiveblood after every failed attempt at a section. If you want a hint as to where to find the Deep Focus charm: it's behind a breakable wall. If you want MORE hint about it knowing that, it's behind a breakable wall in Crystal Peaks, around halfway up or so, with a miner standing in front of the breakable wall.
I cleared the main part of the White Palace without dying (losing all masks) on my first try, but that was only possible, because I have been playing video games for more years than you have been alive, my first games were platformers, and my full attention was on the game. For what it is worth, you are doing very well for someone who is new to platformers on the first playthrough while recording and trying to be engaging with your audience. Thought I should mention that since I saw one of your community posts, and many people seem to forget or have no idea how difficult doing all that that can be. You might also get snarky comments about using hiveblood for mask regeneration, so just do not mind those comments. Just keep going, persevere, and enjoy the game. Also there is a secret part of the White Palace. The name of that portion will be displayed on screen the first time you enter, and you should take the name of that place seriously as a warning. I died a lot in that portion despite being able to clear the main part without dying on my first try. My suggestion is to try to get the next two of the five main endings before you go for that secret part.
Yeah, I haven't played a platformer since Yoshi's Island - so a long time!! But I'm getting into the swing of things for sure!! Hiveblood is a god send here. Thankfully I've only had people compliment me for being smart and using is to that's a relief haha!!
1:22:00 Sophie sees a way up with two windows to jump up and chooses the smaller window 4 times and does it on the 5th time. The dark souls soul is very strong in her.
The blue health charm is only hurting you here. It prevents you from healing. You can dream nail those palace servants for infinite soul, and heal as much as you want. Also, you can keep dream nailing White Defender after beating him. The fight changes each time you beat him.
I felt like you were doing great at the White Palace. It really is difficult. I was soooo bad first time I completed it. I took many hours. Considering you really felt fed up with that part of the game, you can read a minor tip below if you want. Not to necessarily make it easier but to improve quality of life part of it. . . . . . . . . Do not use charms that turn your health blue. These cannot be healed again. Just just the hive charm & grubsong. Then you have infinite amount of tries without a need for a bench. And skip Sharp Shadow! It really messes with the distance of the dash. If you feel comfortable, add Long Nail & Mark of Pride to gain extra distance when pogoing buzzsaws etc. I believe that you can do this!! You are amazing!
@@drsophiedarling No problem :) The blue health don't heal slower really but they cannot be regained, and as you turn all your health to blue. Your soul becomes useless. I guess you noticed you sometimes got a big reserve of soul from time to time. That in combination with Hiveblood is the winning combination to cheese White Palace. I can't wait to see next video where you'll beat it, for sure 💪
Fun fact, there is an hidden optional section in that beautiful palace called "the path of pain", which is much more demanding than the rest of the palace. It's fully optional but it does give a bit of lore upon completion. However, given that you don't seem to enjoy the platforming I don't recommend doing it. (you already have access to it from where you have left the episode but it's hidden. I've no idea how one could find it on it's own without someone pointing out where it is. Do ask if you really want to go by it's probably not a good idea if you disliked the other potion that much already). Personally, I loved the white palace, I enjoy the platforming and the music is great. I don't really like when the timings are too tight though. But I feel like there is not too much sections where the timing is that tight (I think you already went though the toughest section timing wise. although I don't quite remember what's ahead). I have to say, you got a real good idea using Hiveblood, I didn't back in the day and it's definitely the right idea. Sadly, you paired it with Joni's blessing which made you lost the ability to heal from normal focusing. I feel like if you had kept Grubsong along with the Hiveblood you'll have to wait less between two heals.. Because you would be able to heal from focusing every so often with the soul gotten upon taking damage thanks to Grubsong and you'll have the passive heal from Hiveblood still when you are close to your last few masks. I whish I had though of that in my playthrough though. I did used that combo for the path of pain but It was ages after I finished the white palace (I came to learn about the path of pain waaaay later and re-installed the game just to do it ahah)
Note: the bit of lore is a 2 second scene with no dialogue or text and the meaning of the scene is ambiguous. The reward for beating Path of Pain is primarily the bragging rights of being able to say "I beat Path of Pain."
Before i mentioned how when you mentioned your platforming queen's garden came to mind, and that's true, but it's only half of the thought. The other half was the white palace (but naturally I didn't say anything bc of spoilers)
Most first time visitors to White Palace comment on the decor (often with four letter words). It is a HARD challenge and you did really well! Patience is key and when you've made it through you can say with confidence that you are GOOD at platformers. :)
Officially becoming a hollow knight fan requires you to be permanently traumatized by the white palace’s buzzsaws so congrats!
I'm officially one of you :')
Facts! 😂😂😂
I think I'm going to hear those buzzsaws in my dreams tbh...
@@drsophiedarling That's the real lore of why you need the Dream Nail to reach the palace, clearly that one dude was just so traumatized by the buzzsaws that the entire palace was transported into his nightmares. 😜
The funniest part is when Team Cherry thought the White Palace wasn't hard enough...
If you're looking for something a bit more relaxed after this, I'd recommend paying the nail masters a visit, tell them the sage says hi
I think I just might :')
Really don't feel bad about the palace. I spent DAYS in that palace. Actual DAYS. But finishing it was one of my biggest achievements in gaming and every time I feel like rage quitting in other games I say to myself, "If I could beat White Palace, I could beat this." You can do it!
Thank you so much!!
What can one say about White Palace that hasn't already been said? "Shit!" "Damnit!" "What the hell!" and now, "ARE YOU TAKING THE ABSOLUTE PISS?"
It's like if a masterpiece of a movie had a weird musical interlude in the middle of it.
Me: ???
Sharp shadow was screwing you over a bit in the palace, it increases the distance of your dashes of your dashes
Hive blood is quite good there, but there’s another charm you don’t have that is quite useful in the palace too, helps with healing. It’s behind a breakable wall in Crystal Peaks, one of the miners are digging away at said wall
Yeah, I didn't realise that it would increase the distance on my dash!! Lesson learned!!
seeing you start the white palace with sharp shadow was painful! Nice progress, though
Our little Sophi Knight is platforming like she's never platformed before
I am learning!! 🥲❤️
Pain is ... love -- Team Cherry, probably
Almost like they should name a path after it 🙂
Say the word pain in White Palace, and the HK community will typically react with a shudder and PTSD lol
About C-Dash. You can cancel it only if it's not fully charged, just by releasing the button. After that, the best chance you get is to try and cancel it mid flight as soon as possible.
You can try spamming C-Dash button to stay on a same place on a wall without locking yourself in awrong position.
OHHH okay that's good to know!!
1:03:57 The blue charm actually make the health regain twice as long so i recommend removing them and only keep Hiveblood
Grubsong is also a good bonus to gain back Soul when hit
Grubsong + Hiveblood and repeatedly jumping into pits to slowly regain soul.
Adding fragile heart would give you a couple more masks that can be changed into blue life blood, which can give you enough when paired with the other lifeblood charms
8:49 Are you even a true Hollow Knight player if you don't accidentally fall in the Abyss and "skilfully" dodge every platform on the way down? :P
Good luck!
Yeah, I realised I shot myself in the foot with Joni's Blessing haha but lesson learned!!
Mark of Pride/Longnail can be a curse for some parts of the White Palace - some of the pogoing sections seem calibrated for the normal nail and longer nails can bounce you too far. (So if you’re struggling with part of the Palace and using one of these charms, switching it out is something to try.)
18:45 You can just equip your Fragile Heart charm, you don’t need to go find a blue thing :)
41:58 Good instincts. I do believe that dying in White Palace does indeed break the fragile charms.
Sometimes I am BIG BRAIN!!
Sophie: I feel like I've gotten worse at platforming
Me, having seen the title/thumbnail: oh no
Sophie: enters White Palace while wearing sharp shadow
me: OH NO
Anyway congrats on your trial by buzzsaw.
I unfortunately didn't know until after the fact haha! Glad that I'm aware now! :D
Honestly do not blame you because this place is hell!!
1:09:54 "This is pain and suffering"
Oh dear Sophie, you don't know the half of it (yet). There's more fun to be had in the White Palace!
Should we tell her about that Pale King's private amusement park hidden somewhere inside White Palace?
What a fantastic way to start off the episode. The lifeblood door SAGA was pretty great. 🤣
I was so angry 🥲
@@drsophiedarling I felt so heartbroken for you T_T you had the right idea from the start tho! This lifeblood door saga deserves its own short, I think it would be super funny, if I may say so xD
White Palace + Sharp Shadow = so much frustration
Did not realise it lengthened my jump :') Oopsies
I don't think I'd have made it through White palace if I hadn't played Celeste not long before Hollow Knight :D Highly recommend Celeste btw, it really helped me stop taking failure so hard! I don't think you have nearly as much difficulty with that as I used to or anything, but Celeste is amazing regardless :P
I've added Celeste to my list as a few people have mentioned it and I'm nothing but a glutton for punishment!

Oh Sophie Darling, our sweet summer child...
iykyk 😬
Congratulations on beating the White Defender! I hope you noticed more familiar silhouttes in the background this time.
Also this is another dream boss like Zote, where you get a little bit of lore after defeating him several times.
OHH I'll add that to my list to do!!
@@drsophiedarlingThere is really nice surprise if u beat White defender 5 times. I doubt you will bother tho, he deals one more mask of damage everytime (yes, up to 5)
@@martintyrmer5484 Still less then defeating Zote like 10 times :D as he at the end deal 8 maskdamage i believe.
@@johanandersson9208 Yea I did the whote defender five times but I won't bother with beating Grey prince even twice, fuk that guy.
It has been a blast watching you discover more and more of Hallownest. As a veteran Metroidvania/platformer, I have to say, your so called “lack of platforming skill” is about retired. I daresay after you complete the white palace and do the flower quest, you’ll be about a bloody master!
I hope so!!!
It's not the White Palace if you aren't swearing every 5 seconds and dying constantly.
Look, from time to time, some first-time Hollow Knight player comes along and cruises through the White Palace, just makes it look stupidly easy. Sure, it's 100% impressive and jaw dropping when that happens but we also hate those people and secretly wish they hit a buzzsaw at the last moment
Jokes, jokes
You did very well!
18:30 "i didn't want to have to count." i wish i could tell you i have a shred of human empathy or kindness at all but lol, oh my god lol
bloody hell though. that was some incredible progress at the end - imagine day one "died to Gruz Mother because rhythms are hard" Sophie seeing that!
Right?! That Sophie would be in shock!! Also I hate maths so the idea of counting is hard :')
AW LUCA!! I'm so glad I can make this stressful time easier for you! What is it that you're going to study?!
@@drsophiedarling It’s medicine, real competition to get in haha, so I haven’t had too much free time, but I’ve been watching your videos in it :)
@LucaRocha2012 Wow you're big brain!! All my fingers crossed for you lovely on your entrance exams!!
I will forgive you because it was hilarious haha!! Honestly a rage inducing moment!! White Palace is tough!!
I'm a stubborn little shit to my own detriment sometimes!!
You are 1000% correct! I definitely can see the improvement that I've made from where I started to now - it's kinda wild!!
PAIN and suffering you say?
We got lots more than where that came from lol.
I'm not crying...you're crying...
Having sharp shadow equipped at the start made a lot of the platforming harder than it needed to be, because the charm increases dash length and the platforming was designed with regular dash length in mind. There is also a super secret area in the white palace with even harder platforming if you ever want a challenge.
Well dont spoil it lol
spoilers? kinda? not really? anyways
PATH OF PAIN! PATH OF PAIN! PATH OF PAIN! PATH OF PAIN! PATH OF PAIN!

You have everything you need for the lifeblood lock. The fragile heart will be blue health when combined with Joni's Blessing.
I know you’re already hours past this 56:28 , but one of the things holding you back at this point is sharp shadow. It doesn’t mention it in the description, but it lengthens your dash a bit as well as making you cause damage. It breaks your muscle memory!
(Skimming the comments everyone had already said Hiveblood is your friend, but +1 to that from me too!)
You got this!! 😊
Exactly what I was thinking! Sharp shadow messes with your dash, it's a menace, sadly a huge disadvantage here. That charm in general has never really been my thing, in any part of the game, although I do see its perks of course.
Yeah - I really wasn't aware till now but omg definitely shot myself in the foot with that one haha!
9:29 that's what we call "foreshadowing"
White Palace was nightmare fuel for me 😅
You’re doing a great job though! Keep it up
Thank you so much Sally!! It's such a tough area!!
It’s also my favorite bench! When I got to it I realized how special this game was.
I'll happily share the bench with you Julieta - I won't hit you off of it! Promise!
☺️❤
0:48 "It's my favourite bench. No-one will ever take this bench away from me."
Oh god, can you imagine if the infection spreads again and that bench becomes unusable like some parts of the Crossroads. D:
(Also, Joni's Blessing makes Hiveblood take longer to regenerate, but Hiveblood+Grubsong gives infinite healing)
OH SHOOT! Yeah, I didn't realise that was the case. Welp I know what I'm taking off for now haha!!

WARNING! SLIGHT MECHANICAL(?) (Crystal Dash) SPOILERS BELOW
Considering you're pretty late game and you visited White Palace, I think it's about time you knew that you can

1) tap the Crystal Dash button to keep in place on walls without readying the dash. Like, just quickly tap it, it cancels the slide. Just don't hold it long enough that the Crystal Dash charges
2) You can stop the dash AFTER you start actually dashing, but I forgot exactly how, sorry (been a while since I played the game and I did it on keyboard anyway).
Thank you for the tips on how to cancel Crystal Dash! I'll have to give them a go!
The white palace truly is a painful first experience, but it's also such a great help when it comes to movement after beating it (especially with pogo-ing stuff with the nail)
As a matter of fact: my first white palace took me nearly an hour and a half of pure grinding, while the second and third one took about 10 minutes
Congrats on making it this far though !! The hardest part is done :)
Thank you so much!! This place definitely tested me 🥲❤️
It is indeed a test of patience, and a cool reference to super meat boy :D
honestly the hardest part for me is that damned hallway at the 1:24:00 area because it's just walking and i can never. do. it lmfaooo. you did great :D
This part of the game is BRUTAL and i considered giving up. You're a way more competent player than I am, and I did it, so I have full confidence in you. I second hiveblood (no lifeblood/Joni's) plus grubsong as S tier white palace charms. The pain....
Thank you so much!! Honestly, my brain was melting trying to figure it out!!
honestly, not a bad first attempt at white palace at all so far, ive seen people take significantly longer than you have to get to the point you stopped at.
btw, if you want to see the hardest platforming challenge the game has to offer, break the left wall in that room you stopped at. the wall wont disappear, but you can walk through, its elevated off the ground a bit. i definitely dont recommend putting yourself through it unless youre really determined to have the bragging rights.
i usually try to avoid spoilers, but with how difficult and unforgiving it is, i think its best for you to be aware of what youre getting into with the the path if you choose to give it a shot, as it doesnt have any in-game reward at the end aside from a tiny piece of lore that you might not even fully understand yet. as fun as watching people get mad can be, i really dont want you to find it and try it without knowing what youre getting into, experience a quite large amount of frustration, and have it leave a sour taste in your mouth.
You're so brave for facing down The White Palace like that Darling...
Keep up the epic adventure! :D
Just so you (if you didnt realised it already) the sharp shadow charm makes your dash longer, so using it in the white palace can be a bit trick until you get comfortable with the range
I find the king's collection of buzzsaws slightly unnerving.
I'm curious why he wants so many!!
0:45 "my favourite bench". Such a benchist. All benches are equal!
18:43 Sophie seems more upset about the missing lifeblood than seeing the banker again. I remember a lifetime ago when she tried not to swear :D
45:00 "cause I don't know what awaits".
The Pale King needs a new interior designer...
Why so many saws...why?!
I haven't made it past because omgggggg the stress of it and then my headphones dying just instantly made me go "that's enough for today" haha!
Sophie, you have some unfinished business with the fountain in the ancient basin.
Also, you do have 3rd charm that increases your health...So you could have gotten the blue door without looking for life blood xD
You are doing great on white palace ! I am loving the patience (-:
Below are some spoiler-free ideas on what to do next if you want them !
Also I second making a reaction to mossbag's video when you think you are done with the blind part of your playthrough (you figured lots of lore points yourself, it was super cool !)
The other DLC (Godseeker) is very well hidden (I had to look it up) and is also very difficult and grindy, definetily a defferent atmosphere than the main game, and needs a patient mindset.
As beautiful as the White Palace music is, it makes my left eye twitch from a nervous tic to this day. 😵💫
I don't think I'll be able to ever hear a buzzsaw without flashbacks...
Hiveblood got me though the White Palace…. and a video or two, lol! As if it doesn’t take long enough without waiting 10 second a mask.
"This had better be enough or I'm going to scream"
*me, having done the math and knowing you are going to be 1 off* "Well, this'll be good."
Actually, if you equipped fragile heart the 2 masks it gives get converted to lifeblood by joni's blessing and you would have had more than enough.
Well, then, imma need you to prove your worth by getting real damn good at precise platforming."
I'm very fond of the White Palace, even though it had my crying tears of blood getting through it on my first playthrough.
I love how they were sadistic enough to put one of the best soundtracks in one of the most HARSHEST AREAS AROUND!!!
1:21:50 The sawblades path go further past the left wall than the right one, that's why the timing felt so tight
"soul tyrant is the worst" wait till you fight lost kin
HAHAHA I do like to make things harder for myself!
The blue health charm is only hurting you here. It prevents you from healing. You can dream nail those palace servants for infinite soul, and heal as much as you want. Also, you can keep dream nailing White Defender after beating him. The fight changes each time you beat him.
First the White Palace, then Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy
I felt like you were doing great at the White Palace. It really is difficult. I was soooo bad first time I completed it. I took many hours. Considering you really felt fed up with that part of the game, you can read a minor tip below if you want. Not to necessarily make it easier but to improve quality of life part of it.

I added on the blue to get more masks but I didn't realise it was slower for healing!! I'll keep that in mind!! Thank you!!
@@SeanARooney true. Still, I enjoyed the scene
Before i mentioned how when you mentioned your platforming queen's garden came to mind, and that's true, but it's only half of the thought. The other half was the white palace (but naturally I didn't say anything bc of spoilers)
The title and thumbnail told me all i needed to know 😂😂😂😂😂
Same, I saw the title and thought “Oh, good. She got to the white palace.”
Most first time visitors to White Palace comment on the decor (often with four letter words). It is a HARD challenge and you did really well! Patience is key and when you've made it through you can say with confidence that you are GOOD at platformers. :)
Thank you Kerstin! Yeah - I'm quite proud of how much I've achieved from where I first started to now!
