    I don't remember watching these races live, but I pulled up the 1998 race on TH-cam for me and my granddad to watch only a day or two before he passed away, so I guess that will be the memory I'll always associate with this event.

    I worked as a corner marshal at this race one year, I think 2001. I remember hearing a call about a “conflagration” in the pits between two team mates, both driving green cars. One was from Canada and the other from Scotland.

    I feel like it’s worth noting that, although English is indeed the primary language of the United States, there is a large subsection of Spanish speakers in Texas, due in no small part to their proximity to Mexico (i.e. they are literally right next to each other).
    And since I’m talking about Texan linguistics, you might find it interesting to know that the third most spoken language in Texas is Vietnamese.

    This track shows up in ChampCarChallenge, which simulates the 00-04 CART/CCWS series, and was a blast to drie in that sim, it was stupidly fun for some reason. Also the track's arial shots always looked somewhat wild, especially pit exit and the T1-3 setup

    Maybe for a future episode you could talk about TC2000's Santa Fe Street Circuit (Argentina), although that event took place in different layouts (mostly in the same area tho) and finding info in english about that track could be difficult (here is a video with all of the track layouts: th-cam.com/video/y-TkJ66K7Yc/w-d-xo.html )

    Wait they ran in 01? What? I thought 2000 was the last one for some reason.
    Oh and, does the 50s Havana track count? Fatal accidents,political machianations, Fangio being kidnapped and treated well by Castro, the wild layout and the 50s racing. Not sure if it hits all the the boxces for this series
    I don't remember if you covered the street oval that was the Meadowlands last hurrah, oval rules on a street course, and no 90 degree corners to boot...
    EDIT: Oh and, btw since I saw the Birmingham superprix show up in comments, it was made for Race 07/GTR2 and is a blast in both games. flying down the Middleway in a high end race car is stupid amounts of virtual fun. Tourin cars actualy, at least for the virtual course, work really well there. F3000 in Race 07 an Radicals are super super fun, Caterhams too. Try drifting a virtual Caterham aroun the track in the rain while holding off a pack of AI. Is super fun

    In the defense of Martinsville:
    It used to be a great track for racing, until NASCAR introduced cars with tires that are way too thick and put an extra gear in the transmission.

    • @gaborcsizmazia2210
      @gaborcsizmazia2210 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't think he meant that Martisville produces bad racing, rather that it is very tight, narrow and slow, compared to all of the other tracks.

    • @DannyPlaysStuff
      @DannyPlaysStuff ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe what makes racing in Martinsville rather bland with the new cars is due to the brakes.
      It's not that the brakes are bad, but it's actually good that it kinda diminish the chance of using your opponent's rear bumper as brakes in the track (though I don't think an international war criminal with the name that rhymes with "Witty Stank Howe's junior" gets that memo).
      NASCAR has made changes to make racing with the short track package a bit better this year (and in some cases it does like in Loudon), like removing the diffuser and chopping off the spoiler in half, but the brakes remain as powerful as it is. Also tbf there are no other short tracks in the calendar similar to Martinsville so it's going to cost more if they want to introduce an even more specific package for just one track.
      My solution probably gonna be a bit too dangerous in terms of safety, but if you cannot change the brakes, _why not make it weaker by limiting the brake cooling just a little bit?_
      Sure the brake issues at Gateway was rather concerning but the track has higher avg speed than Martinsville, so in theory it could probably work as the drivers must manage their throttle and brake input more.

    • @Dat-Mudkip
      @Dat-Mudkip ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DannyPlaysStuff The easiest solution would be to reduce the tire width (less grip) and remove the extra gear (slower acceleration). I especially want thinner tires on all tracks - they've been made so thick that the cars are too easy to handle. (They also need to ditch low-profile tires so they can reintroduce the innerliner. It would prevent a car from being completely crippled by a flat tire.)

    • @DannyPlaysStuff
      @DannyPlaysStuff ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I forgot to factor the engine braking, but tbh they got no choice on the gearbox because 4-speed box is simply not desirable for Cup manufacturers anymore, especially when the plans for hybrid system implementation has been talked about for half a decade now. Same case with the wider tires, more or less.

    • @Dat-Mudkip
      @Dat-Mudkip ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DannyPlaysStuff I think the racing needs to take priority over what the manufacturers want.

  • @djvycious
    @djvycious ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's interesting because while the layout was uninspiring, the long back straight and wide-ish track meant it was a good racing track. Add a little rain like in 1998 and you have utter chaos.

    Houston has that itch for street tracks it seems. Or more so... CART/IndyCar has an itch for Houston. It's definitely a weird track even if it's just a bunch of blocks.
