  • Fasting while undergoing menstruation or post natal bleeding?
Dr Zakir Naik: As far as the woman who are undergoing menstrual cycles or post-natal bleeding according to our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saws), its mentioned in Sahih Bukhari, also in Sahih Muslim that it is forbidden for a woman to fast who is bleeding due to menstrual cycle or post-natal bleeding.
So it is not optional, it is forbidden. And the reason is because when the blood flows out in a lady, in a woman, she loses a lot of blood and on top of that if she fasts it will not be good for her health. So Allah (swt), it is His Mercy that he has exempted them and made it compulsory not to fast otherwise it may be damaging for her health. And Allah (swt) does not want to overburden any of the human beings. So that's the reason they are exempted from fasting and even in the middle of the day if the menstruation begins, they have to break their fast. Even if it begins a few minutes before sunset, they have to break the fast but they have to compensate later on. But if they are undergoing the menstrual period and if the period stops just before Fajr even if they did not have a bath, they can start their fast. But if it ends even a few minutes after Fajr, they cannot fast. They have to break their fast but they have to compensate it later on

I have spotting for 3 to 8 or 10 days before my periods begin. This spotting is attached to my period i.e my period start as soon as the spotting gets over. So will that spotting be considered as part of my period? Can I offer Salah during my spotting? If I include spotting to my period than whole process last for sometime around 15 to 16 days. What should I do in this condition?

At the time of our beloved prophet S.W.S. , They use to trek for a long journey that is why the obligation it fasting has been lifted upon them. But this our times, we sit in buses comfortably to where we are going to, would that also exempt a person from fasting?

Fasting has nothing to do with purity. If one is sick (for whatever reason, may include menstruation), s/he can miss/break the fast. But if s/he feels okay, s/he should be allowed to fast. Menstruation should not be classified as a different case. Read Al Quran.

I want to ask something really important, as most of the people know that women’s cannot fast during mensuration. But it gets really hard sometimes to explain brother or even the other people like work colleagues that why we are not fasting. So is it obligatory for women to pretend that she is fasting during her menses. The thing is we fast for Allah and he knows the reasons that why aren’t we fasting. But what about people they judge and ask questions like why aren’t you fasting?? So what should we do in these kind of situations???

@@dilkill371 Qur'an never says that woman can't fast on their period. it is just a debate of whether women shouldn't fast on the first or two days of their period because of heavy cramps. we're not dirty. blood doesn't affect fasting. when your nose bleed while you're fasting it doesn't break your fasting. it makes no sense.

@@crystallineleaf Very good point sister. I think there is a general problem, how scholars treat menstruating women. Menses should be seen as a hardship for women. To ease their situation and their struggle, they are free to fast or not to fast. As Allah says: "Ramaḍân is the month in which the Quran was revealed as a guide for humanity with clear proofs of guidance and the standard ˹to distinguish between right and wrong˺. So whoever is present this month, let them fast. But whoever is ill or on a journey, then ˹let them fast˺ an equal number of days ˹after Ramaḍân˺. Allah intends ease for you, not hardship, so that you may complete the prescribed period and proclaim the greatness of Allah for guiding you, and perhaps you will be grateful." 2:185
