- There are some modifications that you can do to improve your sawmill. One is for comfort, three are for transport and all of them are awesome!
Each of these mods were done to my mill to help me transport gear and supplies to remote locations except for the umbrella mod which is to help keep the sun (and rain) off my back while I'm running the mill. The shade the umbrella provides is perfect on a hot sunny day and keeps me from getting worn out too quickly! Simple mods anyone can get done or do themselves (like the spare tire carrier) and you will thank me later if you do them!
The rust inhibitor and lubricator I use when the mill is sitting over longer periods is: FLUID FILM. You can get it several places like the big box hardware stores etc.
Put an umbrella on your sawmill! It's the best!

[As many of you may know, making TH-cam videos is hard work! It can take this Old Jarhead 4 to 5 hours of editing (and a liberal amount of cussing) to edit one video! So I’m definitely getting some baskets made when I get the new mill.
I love mine! Really helps when hauling the mill to remote locations
I've had complaints about having music too. Everybody seems to want real sawmill audio. My first video is INCREDIBLY BAD and yet people watch it. I even added a warning not to watch it. Maybe I'll edit it and reload it.
Thanks for sharing
LOL true enough! I guess the key is to get better at making videos overall but I do think it is fun re-visiting that old video and seeing how I learned on the mill back then. It is my 2nd mill but the first was all manual (some vids on here with it too). I'll look for your remake too!
Hi how have you been.
You may know this , use a ratchet strap with a load rating tag for the fuel can, Bungies would be classed as insecure load according to Dot. Can hold only a tarp down nothing else, stupid rule but some of our guys got into trouble over it.
Thanks! I didn't know about that rule and will be sure to use ratchet straps moving forward (I have plenty). Appreciate the comment!
You must be charging a fair amount for any job taking you so far from home because 150 miles is a long ways. We used to limit our travel to about a 30 miles radius without charging a travel fee. Now, the logs come to us and we don’t move anymore.
Are you charging by bd ft or by linear or by hour? We charge by bd ft.
I charge $1/mile each way plus $100 setup/delivery fee and $100/hr once I start milling. It works out to around 40c/bf with good off bearers and good site prep to 60c+/bf. However I am a bit of a unicorn in that I am 100% mobile and will travel as far as needed (and a customer is willing to pay for).
@@TheOldJarhead $400 a thousand is pretty good money. We’re getting $380 but we don’t have to travel so it’s pretty good money for our location.
@@anooseholay I've heard if folks charging double that these days!

Yo, thanks for showing some love! Liked, watched, and commented - you're the real MVP!
I don't have a nice shop (only 200 square feet) but it is a mess.
I had no shop until I got a tent about 10 years back...then half the garage (so maybe 400sq/ft and finally built this one at our new place! But I know exactly what you mean! 200sq/ft is harder to keep clean and organized I think as you're always looking for room, moving things, working, moving more things. Here's hoping some day you get a bigger shop to make a mess in! ha!
@@TheOldJarhead My biggest problem is that my tiny shop is so full of stuff that when I need something that is in the back I find it easier to climb over everything rather than move it all and then when I go to put it away it just ends up inside the door because that is once again easier than moving everything.
@@DarrelCarson I get it! I have a very small shed at our cabin and everything is up front! lol but then, rats invaded it several times so I can't be bothered to do much with it, other than maybe torch it!
