You'll now understand what Eddie Vedder was saying in his speech at R.E.M.'s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The lyrics help, but I always have to recognize the power of the band's musicianship and Michael Stipe's voice to evoke emotion.
This was my request on Patreon, so thank you for listening to it. Your thoughts about it were right on the money I thought. It’s about remembering a more innocent time.
"September's coming soon..." Every single year I listen to this song at the end of summer. "These things they go away/Replaced by everyday..." Is there a more devastating (yet true) couplet? Wow, wow, wow. The woodwind you hear is an oboe, quite perfect for the mood here. And by the way, don't worry about trying to explain your emotions in the face of a beautiful piece of art. Philosophers and aestheticians have been trying to do this since the time of Plato, and they haven't settled on an answer yet!
Swimming at night truly was magical. Children live more in the moment and are not thinking of creating memories. You are such a wonderful mother to recognize the importance of giving them this precious gift. These will be your memories too so take time to appreciate every moment as you watch your children create their own. I see that magic in the present much more now than I used to, floating in the sea, looking up at the sky and thinking I’m so lucky to be here in such beauty.
Your reaction was the same one I have every time I hear this; it’s one of the most beautiful songs I know. R.E.M. was magical, especially their debut EP and early albums when the lyrics were often obscure and often impossible to make out. It’s absolutely worth diving into the catalogue. So many of us were absolutely devoted to them for good reason. And the thing is, there were so many other bands that were similarly special that never made it anywhere near as big as R.E.M.: The Go-Betweens, Prefab Sprout, American Music Club, Winter Hours, The Field Mice…
Lovely. I'm always moved too by this song, the wistfulness and emotion. Even if there is some vagueness, I don't care, I enjoy the feeling. I've only been here a couple of times but I've enjoyed each of your reactions thus far!
It is fine to become emotional. It is what makes you, you. Your honesty in your reactions is why so many people love you. Please do not change. Loads of love. ❤️
For me this is on the only album where I love every single track, and this song is part of the best album closure also. You really need to listen to it all, even if its a song at a time on here.
One of the most lush, gorgeous songs of my life. As man, of "a certain age", I have tears streaming down my face listening for the hundredth time, watching you listen for the first. I never fail to cry at this one. I'm just a melancholic, nostalgic old fool. Here's a lovely live version with bassist Mike Mills on piano. th-cam.com/video/KVT0S0j7F9Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=d1idaASrMeSjuDWX
R.E.M in my memory seemed to arrive, bringing with them some very catchy tunes, and then left. I guess you could argue they went out on a high. Never a bad thing I guess. How dare we get emotional about our kids 😁 We often want them to have what we had and what we didn't and both of those situations for us left a mark. Kids I think are always in the moment It's later on in years they start understanding what was important and special to them. At some point they'll share it with you. Go easy on the vitamins. I don't know why. 😎

One of the most beautiful songs of the 90’s.

Don't be afraid to show your vulnerability if a song moves you, embrace it and appreciate the talent of the band.

Your reaction is entirely appropriate! I've heard this song dozens of times, and it's magical.

Totally reminiscing. Always reminds me of a specific memory one summer , can’t ever shake it. This band, this song, also from that era…
R.E.M., named for a dream-state condition (rapid eye movement), formed in 1980 in Athens, Georgia.
It is a moving song. I'm not sure yet, but I've strongly considered to ask for it to be played at my funeral.
One of my favourite bands ever. Such a huge back catalogue, all of it good. Automatic For The People is a great album.

Nice 😊 it's a classic 👌
Like your energy. REM was my favorite band in high school in the 80’s. All the albums before the one that has that other song you like are great.

Having feelings listening to music is always appropriate.
We love hearing about your feelings
These moments are our life.
Your yapping is good.
Grqet track.

You are no fool. Feeling life is living. 💓
Thanks for the link. It is a lovely version... enough tears for none day. Enjoy your 4 dimensional day.
Try at my most beautiful
But how does it taste AFTER you add actual vitamins? yum R.E.M. back to the 80s again and clubbing (w/faux ID)
