Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another PATREON request with R.E.M.'s "Nightswimming." An interesting song with various possible meanings, REM voice is lifted with awesome piano arrangement and strings. This one is nostalgic of it's time. See my reaction now!

Thanks Dereck, for doing this one. It is so moving. It is a story! This song, for me, is about aging and the photograph on his dashboard is a memory. That is why they showed 2 sides of the story. The older man remembering his youth; so you see both. How times change. It is reflective. It is real.

My sister already knows (hopefully years from now) to play this at my funeral. My favorite song of all time. Thank you.

I love this, the chords of the piano are the constant gentle lapping of slipping into the water in the still of the night with the coming and going of the other instruments is as if the light is dancing on the waters movement as you move about. Its very raw, simple chords/melody representing simple nature water & light. Even how it ends, like your out of the pool/water, simply all fades & water becomes still, calm & quiet.

I love the whole album this is from, Automatic For The People. I love all the songs from the album but this and Find The River really hit me. Sure Man On The Moon and Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite were probably more catchy and was the reason they were chosen as singles but when just album tracks are amazing is the sign of a true great band, which is what REM are. More please!!!

My favorite REM song since middle school. It's stunning ❤️
The singer, Michael Stipe, refers to himself as queer, and given that this song was from the early 90s when being out was more fraught than it is now, I've always heard this song through that filter: "The fear of getting caught" etc.

Great reaction to an amazing band. I wouldn't call REM a rock band, to me they are pop, sure they can go a bit heavier, but I don't think they are rock, they is even a bit of folk in there I would say. Can we have more REM please?!!!

  • @Grithron2

People often compare this one to the writing style of Morrissey & Marr because the vocal, besides being simultaneously monotonous and rhythmically-irregular, is clearly a countermelody, responding to an instrumental lead line (piano, in this case). Also the lyrical implication that skinnydipping may be a metaphor for a furtive sexual encounter - that too is Smithsian. (A band often compared to both R.E.M and The Smiths is the still-underrated Gene - and they covered Nightswimming, minus the orchestration, for a b-side).

Hi Dereck! I'm not a fan of this song. I prefer " Losing My Religion" that i discovered for the first time in 1991, that I still like, always on the radio and often in music videos, NO.3 in France cuz this year it was Mylène Farmer with " Désenchantée" which has long remained NO.1 in the TOP 50.
Moreover, 1991 was a very good year with lots of "come-back" or "news" : Mariah Carey "Someday" in 7" version ( my fav!) , Whitney Houston, Scorpions, Kylie Minogue, Paula Abdul " Rush Rush", Céline Dion with her first song in English: " Where Does My heart Beat Now", Beverley Craven " Promise Me", Mecano " Hijo de la Luna", Roxette " Joyride", Leny Kravitz that I discover for the first time " It ain't Over Til it'S Over", Chris Isaak " Wicked Game", Extreme " More Than Words", Cher " The Shoop Shoop Song", Stevie B. " Beacause I Love You", Vanilla Ice " Ice Ice Baby", Simply red " Something Got Me Started", The Rembrandts, Pricne 1 The New Generation " Cream", MJ " Black Or White", Cristal Waters " Gypsy Woman", Guns N' Roses, Bryan Adams, Nirvana etc... It also was the beginning of the " K7 single" (single cassette) with 2 tracks on 2 sides!
I liked the "follow up": Shiny Happy People with the female singer of The B-52'S, Kate Pierson. And in 1993-1994 " Everybody Hurts" ranked NO.3!!!! A beautiful song!
