I've had my hair braided by Africans that was so tight I felt my mood change! I literally felt a darkness creep over me that shocked me! I am not exaggerating, nor being facetious... My head hurt so bad that I felt demon possessed.

+orbit gone crazy I'm VERY tender-headed, so I know I would have cried. I have a friend who is a professional stylist, and she'll remind me that it won't last nearly as long as it could because I won't allow her to pull as tightly as she could. I don't care. I can't take it, even if I do take a pain reliever before I go. :/

Just got braids for the first time today from a professional African stylist. I am feeling this video. I can't sleep, I'm scared I'm gonna wake up bald or with my poor scalp just up and leaving me for a better woman with loose braids on.

I'm on 2 extra strength Goody powders and a half a bottle of Jamaican Black Castor Oil for my scalp so to resuscitate my life and scalp. Thank you for giving me my first laugh of my new life.

Yeah!! That's how they "get" you! But it will last longer they say! I can get new growth like a mug and I knew they were just too tight after about 2 months, I'm taking them down and some were still just as tight as when I got them done!!! For my hair type, that's just uncommon.

How is she funny when her entire head is braided. Don't talk crap after its all finished and you left the salon. This ain't smile now and talk crap later. These women work hard and can communicate very well. Some speak 2- 5 different languages yet you try to clown them. Just learn to speak up or shut up. Or take your ass to shay stay house and hold her 3 kids and while you get your damn hair braided. The secret is out shut the hell up lady. You not funny

Lol. I'm Nigerian and as a Nigerian who does hair as well, I know exactly how you feel. I used to be a heavy handed braider as well. As i got older, i started to be more observant about our hair type, its health, taking care of it, etc. Went to cosmetology school and really got into healthy hair.. Growing up in Nigeria, getting my hair braided was painful indeed. it was one of the reasons why I started doing my own hair. Some people aren't fully educated on hair, just as long as it looks good. its sucks.

I love African people and I love my hair braided but why does it have to be so tight? I just got my hair braided after 2 years and I kid you not, my scalp is falling apart. I have scabs all over my head. I take very good care of my natural hair, so why must they braid so tight? No offense but they never listen to you, so you're better off just keeping your hair as is. Note to self, never again:(

You have to dislike a person too braid soooo tight! Then I asked myself, " Why did you sit there and take that torture. Were you under a spell?" 🤣🤣

As a woman born in Africa, the title of this video first had me offended b/c she wrote THE Africans instead of Africans. For some odd reason, when people add the word "the" before a nationality/country/race/etc it carries negative connotations. I watched the video, laughed, understood that African people collectively have a reputation for tight braiding, but understood the offense people felt a bit. But after going through her videos, I have NO issue with this one. I suggest anyone offended goes through her videos. She's a comedian and makes jokes about EVERYTHING. You'll feel a lot less offended after watching her other videos.

***** Watch her videos! She's hilarious, and she means no harm. She also makes jokes regarding African Americans. She has videos where she does go in at people, but she uses sarcasm and irony. She does so in a way that is not petty.
AA and Africans get really sensitive about each other. We need to be able to treat each other with love, respect, kindness, and light heartedness. Everyone getting bent out of shape for no reason.

my advice, as an African (lol) i dont know the pain, as I grew up like this - but my friend who is a hairdresser, when she want someone else to do here hair, she will DEMAND that they *leave here edges out*, so that she can gel them down. EJ this style will most likely break your edges, be prepared to be adding *coconut oil daily* (they will grow back), *but you look cute though :-)*

OMG. I never thought I would see a parody about this. She is too funny.I have been to 5 different African Braiding Salons. They all have braided my hair so tightly that it was literally coming out at the roots!! White tips all over my head 2 days later!! Again, I've tried 5 different ones. Every single one of them braided my hair to death literally. (remember the white tips I mentioned!!!) Plus my scalp did some weird twitchy thing that hurt too. It hurt to lay down yall!
Now I realize they can't all be this way. Maybe it's the country in Africa they come from, but I personally steer clear of African Braiding Salons now. I've given them plenty of chances. Too many! They do an excellent job braiding my hair. However, they have not respected my requests to: Not braid so tight-and not to braid baby hairs at the nape and temples. They all ignored me and did it anyway. One of them had the nerve to joke about how many customers she lost because she braids too tight. She then recommend that I take a painkiller for a few days afterwards. SMH. That's just bad business. That was the last time.
Traction Alopecia is real. It's the #1 type of Alopecia in black women. It comes from tight hairstyles. Alot of times it can be permanent. This is why women should be critical about how their hair is braided.
Braids can last a long time if properly cared for. They don't need to be painfully tight. I've found local salons with hair braiders. I have never had an issue with tight braids since I've stopped going to African Braiding Salons. Perhaps some of us Americans are more tender headed compared to our African sisters. My scalp just can't take it, lol. Sorry.
This is not intended to offend any African sisters. I'm just sharing my experiences. Hopefully some will understand how we feel and take it a bit easier on us.

Girl, I feel you! The pain literally puts yr brain on hold! Hope you never get such a braider again. But in case you do, and she wont LISTEN to your complaints of pain, excuse yourself to go to the bathroom, text a friend, ask her to call you. Fake an emergency call & get the hell out of there! If you must pay the braider (for UNFINISHED hair-do) then do so. Forget the money! Get out in ONE piece!

"I lost partial hearing". Too funny! I got my hair braided one time, came home and told my daughter I couldn't breath. She told me I was being overdramatic. So, I tried to calm myself by Lying down to nap for a while but soon after falling asleep, I jolted out of bed 'cause I thought the reaper was coming to get me. 🤣. Needless to say, I quickly took them thangs out and no qualms about doing so. Yes, some braiders grip so tightly it should absolutely be a criminal offense punishable by 5 years imprisonment and $10,000 fine or both. 🤣

My niece had her hair braided by Africans. It was so tight it look like her eyes was pulled back. And when she took her braids out she had no Edge. That's the whole point of a protective styling to protect. Not damage and lose edges in the process.

Roughly 16 years ago I got my hair professionally done also by Africans. Throughout the process; which took around 6 hours, I kept saying you’re doing them too tight, it hurts. It didn’t matter and she just kept braiding the same. I was going on vacation to Florida and didn’t want to have to do my natural hair while away. After paying (and yes, I even tipped her cause it looked fabulous) and leaving the shop, on my way walking home I started to unbraid my just done hair. I couldn’t take it. That was my first and last time getting my hair professionally done. Whew, trembling with the memory.

Am sorry my dear. Am in Ghana and i was born here and all the Ghanaian Girls go through this. I have many times and i dnt want that experience again trust me. this is why i searched and found your video. Infact am sorry for you. i have been without braids for almost a year and now that am thinkin of getting one, here a i am dreading the pain i may go through the next time. hmmm. Well i wish i had a shop then o wont braid hair so tight. You are very right in your description of the pain you feel. The last time i asked them why braid so tight, they told me they do it so to make it last longer so doesnt come off. mostly when i braid, almost all the hair on my edges goes off along with the strands and hair. i will have to wait so long before my hair grows back. hmmm.
