Great video. I replaced my EGR this weekend and this video helped me a lot. Gerard is right, this job is not a sprint. You need lots of tools, time, and effort. I took my time and removed the EGR on Sat and installed new one on Sunday.
Just carried out this job on 2013 Touran today and all went well thanks to this video so thanks! Just a couple more tips - I removed the subframe complete with steering rack and the O/S drive shaft which then gives much better access to the back of the engine. Once that is all out of the way the removal and installation of the egr valve only takes 1.5 hrs. Also - except for the top exhaust 13mm bolt, nothing needs to removed from above (So leave heatshield / sensors and air box in place!)
Hi Gerard Burke.I do that job without removing feed and return turbo pipe, that save a time and prevent of oil leak from that place. There is plenty of room to slide that EGR valve in to the gearbox side.To make that job easer i always remove bottom engine mount and tilt engine forward and block in that position by wooden block between subframe and diff. Brilliant, thank you for doing this vid Sir. A quick question if I may, IF doing this job again, would you consider removing the right-hand driveshaft completely, in order to gain greater space, and, consequently save time in the long run? Regards, GT
I just removed mine. Did it on the driveway and obviously don't have the car lifted up. It was quite difficult considering this additional limitation. I think just because of that a removed driveshaft would have helped, true also this would take some extra time.
Really great video, helped me out no end. I had problems re-using the turbo pipe gasket, a new one solved my oil leak issue and was £5 from VW. If you aren’t buying a genuine EGR you will probably need this.
i had the pleasure of doing one of these on a octavia, my method was to drop the subframe and get the dpf out the way. much easier to get to those fiddly rusted bolts
I had heard of that prior to doing it but when assessing it I thought it might take longer that way. I also heard about the driveshaft removal too but again I didn't think it would save me time. If I was at another one I reckon (typical mechanic saying) I could get through it a lot quicker, simply because I had to remove the oil supply feed to the turbo a few times due to a failed gasket, and I found the quickest way with my tool setup to get that hardest ones in and out fast.
i think it was somewhere in the region of 4-5 hours total, the power steering was an electric column so disconnect the rack joint, stab links, outer steering and lower swivel joints, gearbox lower mount, then the subframe can be unbolted. the driveshaft and dpf can then easily be removed
maybe not alot of difference in time to you but i prefer to have as much room as i can, specially when some of the bolts looked like they didnt want to come out

Hello, And thanks for all your nice videos, I would like to ask you a question, after replacing the EGR valve of my 2012 Sharan VW 2L TDI, do I have to make the adjustment for the new valve? Many thanks in advance for your reply.
The EGR unit on a 2011 Polo TDI (cfwa engine) looks exactly the same as the one you're doing.. Did you use a code reader to establish faults with the unit? The Polo had fault code P0405. I removed the valve motor, the bit with the electrics plug, checked the operation of the valve in the main body by working the geared lever that the motor works, then reassembled it. Doing that extinguished the Engine Management light.
Hi guys, I have checked all motors and moving parts of this module and I am asking what is the common failing part of it. What can be cleared and is it good option to clear the electric part and replace the cooler or what you will suggest? Second question what brand has best price/quality ratio ? The car is vw passat 2012 140hp without bluemotion and it has 82000 on the board (it has history that prove that number is real)

Well replacing EGR needs any other adjustment or you remove it erase any errors in dashboard and you're good to go? (I get P0405 in my Seat Ibiza 6J and seems like my EGR is bad)
I see your part is not an original replacement but instead it's an aftermarket part. I have been advised by garage that it has to be an original part and that after market would go bad within 24 hours. Please can you advise whether you've had any issues with your new after market part?
Absolutely no issue since install. That is a lie about aftermarket parts. Buy from a reputable Motor Factor that has warranty on the part and you can't go wrong.
@@GerardBurkeBurkesGarage it turns out the garage were wrong. I took it to another garage and fixed the issue with £100. Sold my VW. Never going back! Far too many issues with the 1.6tdi.
I would say clear your day :) ha ha with everything taken into consideration like, rechecking fault codes & making sure the coolant system is free from air etc rechecking for any oil leaks before and after test drive. I would say 4 1/2 - 5 hours. I had mechanics say that expect to have it for the full day and they were right. I was at this one quiet a long time. Like any job the second time would be easier knowing every trick to speed it up. This game is not a race I say to every apprentice that I have work with, rushing through the job to break time records over time will cause mistakes. If I did not re check the job it would have been losing small amounts of oil. You know most of that already :)
No need to remove oil feed or return, I used to do 3-4 of these a week depending on, also wouldn't even think about putting anything but a genuine VW part in anything else is waste of time, nice job I'd gladly do a few of these a week if they came my way, but it's not a race take time and no interruptions 👍
I went to the garage they say to order a new egr system. They never talk about cleaning. So what i understand from here is that even replacing the part will cause same issue in future. Isnt it? 🤔
Hello Paul, Sorry for the delay, I find it very difficult to get through all the comments and its not possible a lot of the time. Regarding the EGR delete it is not that difficult I believe, I have never blanked an EGR permanently for obvious reasons with the workshops I was involved in. With remaps there are a whole host of cowboys out there including plenty that operated in the West of Ireland which ended up giving me extra work fixing problems they created. Use a trusted company or workshop that has good reviews of this type of work being done. I hope this helps and Happy Christmas to you and yours.
I have golf 2011 gdi bluemotion, lately I start to smell bad exhaust smell inside cabin. It happens sometimes. Bluemotion stop working and angine smell really hevy exhaust and the fan running high. Is this error because of bad egr???
Its a regen, dpf is cleaning itself by injecting more fuel and warming up exhaust very hot. Regen takes about 20 minutes. Dont use modern diesel car on short journeys, not worth it. Fan is turning on becouse of heat from exhaust, its normal thing while regen is on.
My girlfriend has a 2013 polo tdi with the engine light on, diagnostic says egr valve is faulty so i have bought a replacement but shall i fit it myself or get it done at a garage? Im not a mechanic and i only have a socket set, any advice is appreciated

Simple tip on how to fix any fault on any VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda etc. Sell the bag of shit and buy a reliable, well engineered vehicle instead of buying into badge snobbery.. All those car makers who got slated in the 80's and 90s took note and went away and fixed their issues, the Germans did not, they're living on a reputation built back in the 70s but now are just plane crap.
@@allanjones1330 Hi, most cars will have dpf issues if your driving style means you're doing lots of short journeys around town, bit that's a driving issue, vag cars have dpf issues full stop. Listen to all car reviews and they all say the same, nice posh plastics and fancy interior, that's it. I'd agree, the interior is very good. But you don't drive that. The real test of a vehicle is in the running gear, and we need to be mindful of that. Unfortunately the masses go on image now more than anything. My Mrs 65 plate audi A1 s line looks like the egr is at the front. I read somewhere that they later changed the position.
Have a VW ea189 engine from new got it too 165000 miles egr failed replaced then failed 11 months later 175000 now at 200000 and failing again any ideas why? It didn't have emissions thing fixed by main dealership and apparently it's a genuine part from vw
How many hours does it take?
Is this a diesel?
Hello,
And thanks for all your nice videos, I would like to ask you a question, after replacing the EGR valve of my 2012 Sharan VW 2L TDI, do I have to make the adjustment for the new valve?
Many thanks in advance for your reply.
Direct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that the EGR cooler not the valve?
Do I have to drain the coolant to do this job?
watch the video noob

would you fit a remanufactured egr cooler or only go with brand new.
don't think the vw coolers are separable from the valve...
@@codetutor6593 i have seen others clean out the cooler passages with oven cleaner, spray foam.It would appear to work ok,do you have an opinion on this?
My current car is Skoda Octavia with the same engine, my previous car was Audi a4 3.0tdi. To be honest 3.0tdi was hundred times easier to work on.
i have very big arms and i find the 10min to take out the drive give me a lot of space
Awful task competed by an expert! Another great video Gerard.
Thank you Paul, I appreciate it.
Hiya, I've just replaced the egr valve on a 2013 vw 2.0 but now I have a whistling sound when i accelerate? Anyone know what's causing that?
Just done one on a 2011 plate audi tt quattro, not nice with the transfer box in the way.hate being a machanic sometimes.😞😞
Can I simply get someone to map out the egr valve?
@@thetruth3316 what was the problem as I'm in dilemma as well to replace my EGR or not
@@aburayhanaabdul5881 there was a cracked pipe under the car .. my local garage where my friend works just replaced that and all good after
@lirico you must be the luckiest can you name the garage
Thanks for sharing this Ger, how long would this job take you? Without the filming and editing obviously it delayed you a bit.
Isnt it? 🤔
Is that on the 1.6tdi Ger? If i want to blank the egr on my 2012 passst is it a straightforward blanking plate and remap? Thanks Ger
Gerard Burke Thanks Ger
thank you for the video!
I have golf 2011 gdi bluemotion, lately I start to smell bad exhaust smell inside cabin. It happens sometimes. Bluemotion stop working and angine smell really hevy exhaust and the fan running high. Is this error because of bad egr???
Injector seal?
Its a regen, dpf is cleaning itself by injecting more fuel and warming up exhaust very hot. Regen takes about 20 minutes. Dont use modern diesel car on short journeys, not worth it. Fan is turning on becouse of heat from exhaust, its normal thing while regen is on.
My girlfriend has a 2013 polo tdi with the engine light on, diagnostic says egr valve is faulty so i have bought a replacement but shall i fit it myself or get it done at a garage? Im not a mechanic and i only have a socket set, any advice is appreciated
My thoughts from your comment would be to highly recommend bringing it to a garage, it will save you a massive headache :)
@@GerardBurkeBurkesGarage £700 later will also make your pocket ache
Make sure you replace to turbo pipe gasket otherwise you will likely have an oil leak!
So how did you undo the top of the last crooked pipe? 2 hours spend and still no result. Thanks
If you look @3:30 you will see my set up, I used multiple 1/4 inch extensions, the slimmer 1/4 allows the socket to just be slim enough to remove. I hope this helps.
Can this egr be cleaned?
Help I got a 2011 jetta tdi has code p040B any help is appreciated
What make is the EGR valve you are replacing
I honestly can't remember, I sourced it from a local parts supplier and it had a 1 year warranty from memory. If I was still in Ireland I would look up the part invoice for you but I am in OZ now so it is not possible.
Can you get stuff to clean an egr valve
Great video.

Wanna help.me fix my mk5 golf 1.9tdi not losing coolant temp sensor goes of for being low then undo expansion tank and level back to normal ?oil perfect no leaks
I had my egr replace on my 1.6 ibiza because the vacuum valve seized up. Ever sins the old egr was replaced I've been getting either exhaust gas or burning off of oil smell that gets inside of the car. The garage that did it has closed down. Taken it to a couple of garages and cant find a fault. Could it be a faulty gasket? Any ideas?
blank the egr....i have same prob hope mine is sorted tomorrow.will update u
It's so much easier to drop subframe and dpf
It's even more awkward on the audi a3 Quattro.

These egr valve are a pain had to replace 4 in 230thousand miles on a 2010 transporter 2.0 tdi 140
Don't take half of that stuff off when I'm doing them
Simple tip on how to fix any fault on any VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda etc.
Any particular cars you'd like to recommend that don't have these DPF EGR issues?
@@allanjones1330 Hi, most cars will have dpf issues if your driving style means you're doing lots of short journeys around town, bit that's a driving issue, vag cars have dpf issues full stop.
Personally I'd go Kia or Hyundai first, then most of the Japanese stuff followed by ford, Peugeot, Citroen.
@@cundycross yes mine has been on a lot of short journeys, knew I shouldn't have given it to the missus! Thanks and interesting what you've said about VAG, you could be bang on the money and maybe I have bought on rep unconsciously.
@@allanjones1330 I feel your pain. I've worked in the automotive industry pretty much all my life, I've seen changes, some good some bad. I spend my days traveling to many local garages as an independent auto electrical specialist. I can guarantee a good 80% of my days work is German. Hence the negative view of them.
If something is good I'll praise it, if it's crap I'll tell it as it is. No need for glossy covers here.
Me, I drive a Mondeo, had it 2 years and racked up 60k, not one single fault. Disks and pads a set of tyres and a few services, that's it.
Before that I had a fiesta van, run 3 years without a single fault, 45k, still on original tyres and brakes, over 65mpg, and the best fun I've ever had in a van. Brilliant.
Looking at new focus, Kia ceed or i30 next, generally end up with ford because I know most of the dealers and they always do me incredibly sweet deals.
Hope your next wheels end up being more reliable.
Looks like an absolute nightmare of a job.
Being quoted €800 by a VW dealership to get a new egr valve , am I being robbed...
Yes what about labour on top . Cant get the valve eurocarparts 250 ish or 300 .I've been quoted its 5 hour job around 550 pitlane garage luton then vat . 😥 sadly car drives perfectly no check engine light or error code for egr issue.
