  • The Pancake Man. Great 'unhealthy' with lashings of sweet milk, sugar, bananas and all the other things you should not eat to much of!!

    In Thailand, it's called Roti. As the name suggests, it has Indian origin. But the Thais adapted roti into a sweet snack, topping it with condensed milk, sugar and sometimes eggs and bananas, whereas Indian roti is a savoury flatbread, eaten with curry.

    as 'orang indonesia'
    we have other version from that food.. its called 'martabak telor'
    we replaced the sweet milk, bananas and sugar to chicken/duck egg and meat

    I want to go to THailand just for these awesome street vendors. =)

  • @DavidHughes-Gardener

    It's actually a pancake mixture. Cooked with a lot of palm oil, and then dripped with condensed milk and heaps of sugar. You cam=n also get the same 'dish' with banana slices included. Not the healthiest option in Pattaya - but very scrummy!!
    The 'cooks' make the most of their 'ability' to put on a show - as well as producing the goods!

    Omygosh am traveling to thailand next month!! I wanna try this!!! That oil! Margarine! Sugaaaarrr!!! Is he putting condensed milk there?!!! Lol by the time i go back home from there prolly gain 30 pounds. Excited for foodtripping

  • @DavidHughes-Gardener
    @DavidHughes-Gardener  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Basically it is a type of Pancake or if you are posh a 'Crepe'. They normally have sliced banana, egg, or sliced mango added.

  • @DavidHughes-Gardener
    @DavidHughes-Gardener  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's very sweet and a little bit oily. Has sugar, sweetened milk poured on. But YES it is vice now and again! You can always ask not to have sugar etc, but you will get strange looks. :-)

  • @DavidHughes-Gardener
    @DavidHughes-Gardener  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ad you can see - there are eggs and bananas at the ready if required. Or you can just hace the plain pancake mix with lashings of sweetened milk and liberal helping of sugar. Mmmm come to think of it - liquid chocolate would be good. Have to suggest that next time I see him.

    LOL at one point she asks him "How much do you sell it for" and he replies "15, normally 10 though". Tourists always pay more in Thailand. :)
    And some girls are saying here they think he's cute. Surely they realise he's also "faaaabulous!" (dat hand swing while he cooks).......

    I have eaten chicken martabak it in Bangkok (Thai Muslim Cooker made it.)
    It's Called Roti but not like Roti in India.
    Roti in Thai is Fried, Roti in India is Baked.

    this is in no way similar in terms of texture and flavor in comparison to pancake or crepes. as you can see there are no batter. he uses a dough. it is a type of flatbread, originated and influenced by an indian flatbread called Paratha. malaysians and singaporeans also have similar dish called roti canai and roti prata respectively. traditionally eaten with savory side dishes curry/lentil soup, they can also be eaten with sweet fillings/toppings.

    maybe i shoulda phrased that better. was probably tired. where i am at in canada we get a lot of asian tourists taking pictures. This isn't intended as a racial remark it's just the way it is. We get a kick out of how they seem to take an interest in the smallest things, things we take for granted. After watching so many videos of thailand it occurs to me that they must think the very same thing. Thinking "why are those falang filming me?" haven't they seen anyone cook food before :P
