Grixis Delver vs Lands | Semifinals 1 - Quest for the Best Legacy Deck Ever
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 25 ก.ย. 2024
- Legacy is Magic: The Gathering's most powerful format. What was the best Legacy deck ever? On this channel, we made our community vote for one deck to represent each year since 2004, recruited 21 Legacy Experts to play a 7-round tournament, and now we bring you each match of the Top 8. Andrea is playing Carl in best-of-3 games of paper magic gameplay and either Delver of Secrets or Wrenn and Six could be knocked out of the tournament.

Carl loves the marit lage
You can tell Carl actually plays legacy. Format knowledge was on point.
I mean, the "look at top 3 with sylvan then dredge" to me says otherwise, since that's a very illegal play. Look at top 3 is a shortcut for sylvan for drawing your card for turn, and then 2 for sylvan, and then putting back 2. you don't get another draw after that.
Carl is the editor of Cardmarket???
Also, I loved this episode. Tough match but also very wholesome. I loved the reciprocal respect that players on this channel display, especially the one exchange about Mengu's workshop having more italians on the channel ahahah. True display of intercultural reverence
He's talked about it in a previous video, iirc ramping up the content on the channel was his idea so the editing/production is up to him, and basically if the channel didn't sufficiently take off he'd have to go back to doing more of his previous work instead.
@@tciddados hidden cardmarket lore just dropped
@@silviobaiguini69420 they did a whole video on the behind the scenes and what Carl did to basically revolutionize the channel and make it on his own. Look it up in their vids its actually amazing what Carl single handledly has done

I like how 'the games are lightning fast' in magic is still infinitely slower than the average yugioh game, and I mean that in the absolute best way possible.
Well, thanks to stupid monored with turn 2 kills possible, standard is wayyy faster at this point 😮💨
@@christiandittrich2608 Faster than Legacy or faster than YuGiOh? Because YuGiOh currently has a 1 card FTK legal, and it's not even the best think you can be playing.
Legacy and vintage are interesting as they can be as simple as a T 1-3 kill or an absolute slog.
@@theglitch5386 Sometimes faster than legacy
You have games that end t1/t2
Or take forever to finish
Great group of guys, happy SOMEONE actually delivers the 60 card competitive content we want. You guys and Mengu’s workshop are always on my feed!
Thanks! 🥰
These are the only two MtG channels I watch! 😃👍
90’s MTG is also good if you like paper legacy :)
Just watched an older video where Andrea on 8cast beat Carl on lands. Hopefully a better outcome for lands in this showdown!
That's funny because that video was the first time Andrea and I met. He flew to Berlin, arrived at the studio and 10 minutes later he was sat at the table and we were playing that game 🙂A lot has happened since then
@@CardmarketMagicyou had 1000 subs on the channel! Look how you grew! 😅
Watching this shit is better than the super bowl. Let's gooooo!
I expected this to be a blow out for lands, but that was incredibly close through that last game. Despite the Choke and the Glacial Chasm, there were several times when just the right card would have turned the tide. A Force of Will or Surgical Extraction could have completely changed the outcome. Very exciting, right down to the last draws. Great match, guys.
Lands was made to beat Delver, and it shows in this match
Just resolving the Price of Progress before Glacial Chasm was on the board would have led to a completely different outcome. The window of opportunity was there, but Mengu chose not to use it (I think he gambled for the blowout win). If Mengu had played Price, Carl would have been at 1 life for the rest of the game and it would have been extremely hard to deploy the Glacial Chasm lock from that point, because he could never pay for it.
we on the east coast are spoiled… this is the perfect noon upload!
Flash hulk versus lands will be pretty short most likely
I would say don’t count miracles out yet but…
Damn does it need a miracle to beat flash hulk. And it already got one of those to even make it to the semifinals.

Carl always comes across as genuinely happy and in good spirits but nothing seems to bring pure joy than to play Lands for him.
LANDS FTW BABYYYYYYYY
Very well played Carl :3
Thank you :)
Once this series Is completed It would be awesome tò see a tournament of Every best deck: pauper vs standard vs modern vs legacy
That's already the plan once we have done 8 of these :)

My boy Carl has made it into the final with my favorite deck, super happy to see how this series is going so far. This bo3 was a great watch, really exciting to see the Price of Progress threaten to take the game. Tapping down to 1 mana for Spell Pierce into Choke into Glacial Chasm was devastating.
Flash Hulk will revenge
@@MrKikke2 Would not surprise me one bit, unless it draws really badly or Lands draws amazingly.
18:40 "You cannot play MTG without them! (Refered to lands)"
Oops All spells joins the chat.
Jokes on you, that deck still has lands!
(Thanks MDFCs)
Old-school Belcher has entered the chat.
At most only ever had one single land.
JUDGE!!!!!
Not that it mattered at this point but at 27:30. Carl resolves sylvan library as "scry 3 draw a card" instead of "draw 3 put 2 back". Because he looks at them puts them back then chooses to dredge loam
If you kept watching instead of rushing to comments, you would have seen they noticed and corrected that.
Not that it matters, but the word Chasm is actually pronounced "Kazm". It's a weird word.
That Glacial Chasm in game three was really nice, especially after it didn't work out in game 2
That was very impressive, much closer than I thought because there were a few windows where Andrea could've burned Carl out with Punishing Fire (I'm not sure but I think that Spell Pierce lost him the game?). Great video, *excellent* gameplay from both players 👌
Mengu cannot respond to Glacial Chasm because it is a land. Otherwise he would have won with PoP.
Ough, no Basics was especially brutal.
I had a colorless commander deck without any wastes in it (because money) and I got ghost quartered three times in the match.
Needless to say I added a couple wastelands to the 99 just incase
Wastes*
My favourite part was when mengucci said "oh yeah it's delving time and delved all over the place"
"Aww, I read it all for nothing" lol
Lands feels like a crazy and fun deck
Carl piloted this deck perfectly, despite it being probably one of the hardest to ! Good game Carl !!!🎉
Why not PoP instead of playing spell pierce? 24:49
Carl had glacial chasm in play which prevents the damage from PoP
it would still "only" be 8 damage. Carl could then just win the game in the same way delaying the glacial chasm revival for one turn, punishing fire the other delver.
But yes both plays are good but would equally lose the game in this scenario
And if you where refearing to 23m before that, carl had 4 nonbasic lands, so PoP would put him at 1 and Andrea would have no creatures and no untapped lands. He made the decision to try and wait for carl to play another nonbasic and kill him on his next turn, unfortunatly the land Carl got was glacial chasm making it a really close game
Damn, that was a brutal match, I got Vietnam flashbacks from my days playing Grixis Delver around this time. My testing partner around that time always played lands, but I had a stifle build which was surprisingly good as you could stifle wastelands and p-fire triggers in response to your drs exiling the p-fire. DRS alone made Grixis have a chance in this matchup, backed up by FoW it was sometimes a nightmare for lands to deal with as it circumvented choke, glacial chasm, loam locks and much more. I loved this card. ❤
Carl, I'm glad you're making it into the finals, but I truly have no idea how lands is gonna beat flash hulk (which I'm already just assuming is gonna beat miracles)
Lands can definitely *interact* with Flash Hulk, at least in game 1, since Flash Hulk uses its graveyard for its kill combos and Lands can Crop Rotation for Bojuka Bog to hose that. Even in games 2 and 3, assuming Lands doesn't just die 2-0, Flash Hulk can still play "honest creature beats" with Dark Confidants and other creatures like we saw in the quarterfinals. Though, as we saw in this video, Lands can assemble a "lock" to prevent creatures go sideways and Flash Hulk does *not* play wasteland
I think there's definitely game to be played there but Flash Hulk is still Flash Hulk
All I’m going to say is that the winning deck is absolutely, unequivocally one of the silliest decks I’ve ever seen
Just came home from our community legacy tournament ”Legacyligan” and went 2-1 with Maverick and I am so hyped for more legacy.
I had no idea you were officially allowed to take back land drops in tournaments! I googled it, and it's even allowed at pro REL. I mean the judges are obviously going to be a lot stricter because it's pro REL, but it is officially allowed.
Wow, that was actually amazing. Carl locked everything out at just the right time. If played any differently Mengu would have 1 shot him with price. GOOD PLAYS CARL!!
I think even when you "fixed " the loam and library interaction it's wrong
Delve replaces a draw so you would delve put loam in hand then draw2 and pick one of those since the third doesn't exist
I love watching Carl play Lands. The deck is awesome and he clearly knows it very well, and really enjoys playing it. When can we get a series of "Carl plays Lands against user submitted decks"? Maybe not playing for the actual deck with how expensive Legacy is, tho...
27:35 That's not how Sylvan Library works - while "rearrange them first, then decide how many I want" is a nice shortcut that works when nothing else interacts with your draws, the way it actually functions is that you draw those cards and put them into your hand (but keeping them separate so you know they're the ones you drew this turn), and then for two of them, put them back or pay life. If you want to dredge Life from the Loam as your only draw for the turn, you have to make that choice as you draw for turn, i.e. before Sylvan Library even triggers, and thus before getting to look at the cards.
I don't think it makes a difference here since with the lock in place, you'd dredge even without knowing what's on top; but technically speaking, once you look at the top card, that card is not gonna get milled for dredge. (If you wanted to, you could draw normally and then dredge for one of the Sylvan Library draws; if you do that, you can't put back Life from the Loam since you didn't draw it.)
(Oh and also as others have pointed out, "chasm" is pronounced with a hard k sound.)
Edit: Turns out this was addressed later in the game, nvm.
Andrea
Veeedeo
Man, I was rooting for Delver to the end. Very nearly had it, with Chasm just barely saving Lands from Price of Progress.
10/10 this series keeps delivering. Super well played Carl, I had the biggest smile on my face as that whole match unfolded!
Game 2 I think Carl could have saved a green mana somehow to dredge loam with tranquil thicket in response to deathrite exiling life from the loam if he tapped the field of the dead for mana before sacrificing it to chasm.
Who else thought they had dirt on their screen because of 'Wrenn and Six'?
20:13 “don’t put the dice on it.”
“Please let me put the dice on it :(“
man that Chasm stopping Mengu. That HURTS
You guys make the best MtG content on TH-cam. Thanks for all the great videos
Finding that Diabolic Edict for the Marit Lage without having the mana for must've been painful
I can't believe there was a Glatchial Tchasm... Carl... how could you do this to Andrea....
What an amazing match! Carl's line to play around Price of Progress is mind-blowingly good! I've have payed the price for sure lol!
Who's Lands deck is that? Very bling! X-D
Man, this makes me wanna play legacy.... aaaaand then you remember that a buch of these cards are actually banned and the decks cost thousands of dollars 😅
SECOND TIME CARLS PLAYS BLEW ME AWAY! ACTUALLY AMAZING LOCK
Wasn't expecting Carl to actually be a Lands master but I would definitely watch a thorough breakdown on how to play Lands from him.
Game 2, Carl should have waited on the Loam until he could protect it with tranquil thicket.
That ending was straight up *diabolical*, I feel like I need to take a cold shower after seeing what Carl did-- ggs!
You know something horrible happened when Andrea takes off his glasses. I've been following that guy for a while now and I don't think I've ever seen him without them.
"My deck can pull it out"
Let's witness mengu's magnificent pullout game.
I have wartched only 2 minutes of the video, but I have found out that I always seem to root out for Carl (Karl?)! I love his energy
Edit 1: I'm at game number three and I have a bad feeling about this. Still rooting for ya Carl! Also, I found about the video that it's Carl and not Karl!
Lands is my favorite deck in Legacy! Go Carl!! :D
Carl bodies a lot of competitive events, I take it? Especially formats like Legacy. He is very good
The FIRST thing I noticed on this video: Mengu's strategy to annoy Carl with the die...
Another great video! Getting to experience legacy through you guys is always a pleasure
I watch a lot of MTG content on TH-cam. I have seen a lot of content from you but it's always funny and interesting. Please keep on with all the nice videos 👌🏻
Woah! I can't believe Carl played a land! So overpowered!
This channel and series emjodies people who just love having a good time playing
Couldn't Andrea cast pop in response to punishing fire?
I can't believe Andrea has been forsaken by the topdeck gods.
When I used to play Legacy, I played Abzan Loam. My worst matchup was Lands. However, I was able to win a match against Lands on a mulligan to FOUR purely on the back of Deathrite Shaman. 😂
The "CH" in "Chasm" is pronounced as a "K", just so you know :)
I couldn't be happier. More Legacy, more Lands and an amazing set of games! I just want everyone to see how unique and awesome Lands is!
Mengu shouldn't have spell pierced and instead Price of Progressed to turn off a Chasam Draw.
Carl could have also done the life from the loam/sylvan interaction differently. Mengu gave him a less than great workaround.
Carl can draw for turn, then library will trigger and he may choose to draw 2 additional cards. Instead of drawing the first of the two cards, he can instead dredge 3 cards, return life from the loam from his hand, and then draw his "second" additional card. As Carl is not drawing a card via library's effect when dredging life from the loam, he can choose to return the "second drawn card" to his library. This way he gets his draw for turn AND can return life from the loam to his hand, and not lose 4 life.
Additionally, he can choose to apply the dredge in any order such that he can sneakily keep the 1st draw for turn, and also draw the first of 2 cards granted by library, then dredge 3 cards and return life from the loam in lieu of the second additional card, and put back either of the two cards drawn that turn in case he wanted to draw that 1st card next turn during his normal draw for turn. This way he can float a card on the top of the library indefinitely while still dredging to loam.
The best Legacy deck is Modern Horizons 1, 2, and 3

Really fun match, seeing a control deck faceoff played well is never bad! I love lands but somehow I doubt it has a good Flash Hulk matchup, hopefully Miracles pulls out a miracle upset!
Real close matchup, Mengu being 1 land off from escaping the lock was pretty great. Glad to see a chasm lock show up though, I was wondering how feasible of a strat it was for the deck / how common it was.
crazy thing to not use the price of progress after having choke being used...
Kudos on Mengu for being a gentleman
Noooo! Mengu was soooo close!!!! This match was insanely close, absolutely was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Absolutely great games!
Wow, great match! It's very cool to see these decks played and explained so well. Cardmarket is the best viewing experience for people like me who may not know how everything works.
I play a land deck for commander, and I'm cheering for the lands deck. Let's Go Lands!
Weird interaction between Sylvan Library and dredge:
You can dredge two or three Life from the Loam into your hand during your draw step, and you won't have to pay life to keep any of them.
Legacy by far the best format! Unfortunately it has died out quite a bit!
I love how Andrea now routinely messes with Carl by leaving the dice with something other than a 6 on top.
Fun interaction of Sylvan Library and Life from the Loam (or any dredge cards), if you dredge you didn't draw that card so if you dredged 2 of the draws you only have 1 drawn card to pay for or put back and if you dredged for all 3 of the draws you don't put back anything.
You don't discard a Land as an additional cost when casting Mox Diamond, you discard it as a replacement effect as it would enter. So you don't have to discard if it gets countered.
I have pretty bad ADHD but you guys do such a good job from the editing, (even tracking revealed cards) the cutaways to strategy talk, the banter and game talk. It's super easy and entertaining to follow along even with longer games which i cant say for many other bo3 paper content, which i love to see.
This was actually closer than expected, that Price of Progress was so close to being cast!
Almost forgot to like this one. The best deck ever series is the absolute best content on this awesome channel and the legacy videos are extremely tense and exciting. I love everything about this and im already sad that there are only 2 more videos.
Y'all are seriously one of my favorite magic channels. Quality gameplay with good commentary and insight as well as friendly banter. Congrats to Carl on his win!
this content is soo good.
i would continue to do the same format of 7-videos tournaments but even when the "best deck of format X" expires.
You could do "best deck of standard of 20XX", "best deck of [modern no horizons](to popolarize a format maybe, i just came up with one)", "best deck of [no banlist pioneer]".
Those 1v1 content are soooooooo god!
The irony is that if Andrea did not have any Delvers in play n the last game, Carl would not have dropped the glacial chasm and Andrea would have had the kill with the Price of progress.
when that glacial chasm hit the table my heart shattered into a million pieces
Looks like lands vs flash hulk in the finals, and my money is on flash hulk.
But I personally hope we are in the universe where miracles wins to go on in the finals, because underdog.
I expect lands to win, but I really hope that delver wins so that the finals isn't a complete landslide in the extreme likelihood that flash beats miracles
Heya, love the content Carl. just a small tidbit, when casting mox diamond, you only discard the land as a replacement effect of it entering the battlefield, it's not an additional cost to cast the spell ;)
otherwise, beautifully played!
In case somebody asks: You are allowed to take your land back, because you dont pass priority after playing a land.
I have to admit, I'm a big fan of Pauper, and I have a lot of Pauper decks, mainly thanks to inspiration from Cardmarket, and of course, Andrea is a big inspiration too. But this was a great Legacy match.
15:40 would it not be better to cycle in response to deathrite's ability so that you would preserve your loam?
Seeing Carl be so focused and serious and playing responsibly really made me realize we're already in the semifinals of this series. I can't wait to see which deck will join today's winner in the finals!
And this is why lands is like 90/10 against agro lol
Losing to a basic check is tough. Good match, can't wait for more!
After seeing the performance of flash hulk, it is close to impossible to beat that thing
This was a great game. Lands is so brutal against some decks.
Lands is such a fun deck and you can tell Carl has a lot of experience playing it, rooting for him to go all the way!
My favorite deck vs my favorite player!!
