    Cambodia is a fascinating country with such a sad history. I knew some people who suffered under the rule of the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot. How did learning about the Cambodian genocide affect you?

    • @UnJadedJade
      @UnJadedJade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      It’s honestly haunting. I’m surprised that it’s not spoken about more. I talked about it in the middle of the video after reading a book set during that period and it definitely made me realise why the cause of education in particular is so important to Cambodia. They lost a generation of skilled/educated people (including teachers etc) so rebuilding that sector is difficult. The staff we were working with also told us stories of how it affected their families and it’s just devastating.

    • @ooloncolluphid5299
      @ooloncolluphid5299 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@UnJadedJade Why do you think it is not talked about more? The Khmer Rouge wiped out almost 1/4 of the population of Cambodia; the obsession with removing the skilled/educated people reached such intensity that the khmer rouge even started targeting people who wore glasses (yes, really), and yet the genocide seems to be rarely discussed in the west. I currently live next door to Cambodia in Thailand and even here a lot of people have never heard of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. Why do you think that is?

    • @UnJadedJade
      @UnJadedJade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@ooloncolluphid5299 Such a good Q. From a UK perspective, we only really learn about (very selective lol...) British history in our curriculum e.g the Tudors, WW1 and WWII, so the exclusion of Cambodian history doesn't seem intentional as much as it seems the average for how we treat most countries' history!! I don't know if there are any political motivations for it not to be discussed?? Not sure about Thailand etc, do you have any thoughts?

    • @darkacademiaaudiobooks
      @darkacademiaaudiobooks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@UnJadedJade Pol Pot's atrocities aren't covered at all in American history classes. President Jimmy Carter is alleged to have given support to Pol Pot, one of his many foreign policy mistakes that included beginning the arming of jihadists like Bin Laden against the Soviets in Afghanistan and not supporting the Shah of Iran enough against the Ayatollah. Pol Pot is up there with Hitler, Mao, and Stalin as one of the most evil leaders of the Twentieth Century.He was supported by the United States and Communist China against Vietnam and the Soviet Union throughout the 1980s. In terms of UK involvement, Margaret Thatcher secretly supported the Khmer Rouge in the 1980s. I don't see how the US or UK thought it was a good idea to fight against Communists in the Soviet Union by supporting even worse Communists like Mao and Pol Pot.

    • @ooloncolluphid5299
      @ooloncolluphid5299 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I think even for an average person in the U.K. their understanding of history would extend beyond the curriculum; most people in Britain do not learn about American slavery or the American civil war but most people are aware of it because it is heavily referenced in the general culture in things like films and tv shows.
      My Thai girlfriend and I watched the film Django Unchained (a film about American slavery) and at the end of the film my Thai girlfriend, who is very intelligent and a masters student in biochemistry at the best uni in Thailand, said ‘I’m a little confused. So black people… they had owners?’ She had never heard of the transatlantic slave trade or that particular variant of racism. I had to explain the whole thing and she was shocked. She said all they learn about in Thai school in history is the history of Thailand/Siam, Thai kings and the Buddha. That is what they consider important in Thailand for people to know.
      History is very big and the time in the curriculum or is very limited especially when you trying to get some kids just to read, write and do basic maths. Obviously you are going to select things to teach that are relevant to your nation but there is always going to be Nationalist or political bias in choosing the specific areas of history that you think are important to focus on.
      I asked you because when the Cambodian genocide was occurring there was significant denial and confusion from both the left and the right in the west. Left academics like Chomsky initially called the records of atrocities from the Khmer Rouge as anti-communist propaganda. However, the political right rarely seems to talk about Cambodia as the fact is the Khmer Rouge were able to come to power because American bombing raids bled into Cambodia which destroyed civilian homes and drove more people into the propaganda of the Khmer Rouge.
      It seems like genocide is rarely selected for any curricular outside Cambodia or for any entertainment or films for the reason that learning about the genocide does not fit into any clear political narrative that serves any side. The right can point to the clear Marxist influences on the insanity of the Khmer Rouge government and the left can point to the US bombing raids which radicalised the country; the politics of the issue is too contentious and so it gets ignored or not selected to be studied.
      That is my take anyway. What do you think?

    As some one living in an underdeveloped country and having some knowledge of the NGOs, I can totally relate to your point. Every now and then listening to the news there will be this organization that has donated this huge sum of money to solve a problem, leaving me astonished cause not much change is happening, but I guess some help is better than no help.
    Am so happy with the work of united world schools I think the other NGOs should learn from them and try to be more like them.

    This is such perfect timing because I've also volunteered to help educate children in the rural areas of a developing country, just like Cambodia. I'm excited to be able to witness everything I've learnt and read about so far, and to be able to get an oportunity to actually act on my wish to improve education in such countries but I'm so worried the environment will be difficult for me to adjust to, or that I won't be able to interact with children because of my language barrier.

    Just learning that Thatcher supported the khmer rouge and supported the genocide that occurred in Cambodia (quite recent) I think that more should have been done to support the education systems in the rural parts of Cambodia. It’s been 40 years and I know more could have been done to help the people in majority of the regions. I think It didn’t help that many western academics were in denial of the genocide.

    Please help Cambodia 🇰🇭 About Golden boy because this is the true art culture of Cambodia and my country has great art on the temple, we can see the crown and the dress is the same of our Angkor art sculpture And we have a lot of historical evidence.

    Why is the charity hoping for eventual government running of the schools? That's the worst thing they could do for those kids. When it comes to childhood education the gov should be kept far away from interfering. The schools should be private and community run, focusing on developing skills, business, trades, independent living, and growing&living off the land. My kids have been taken out of the gov run education system and its the best thing I could've done for them. I hope before it's too late this charity changes its direction for the future
