Maybe the best robot demo ever | Marco Tempest

  • Marco Tempest uses charming stagecraft to demo EDI, the multi-purpose robot designed to work very closely with humans. Less a magic trick than an intricately choreographed performance, Tempest shows off the robot's sensing technology, safety features and strength, and makes the case for a closer human-robot relationship. (Okay, there's a little magic, too.)

      ***** The question you have to ask is: How many videos on TH-cam get 25% dislikes? Probably the bottom 10 percentile. It's an okay video, but the title hyped it up to be the "best demo ever". It's fucking 2015 and we have a slab in our pocket who can understand us perfectly when we say "Find me the nearest Italian restaurant". There's an AI that can perform better than doctors at diagnosing diseases, and another one that can automatically label objects in pictures and describe them in language, without any metadata.
      Gimicks like the ones presented in this video are basically just animatronics, technology from the 50's.

    smug is right, titling a video "Maybe the best robot demo ever" when it isnt even a robot demo. It is just a choregraphed performance, a program the runs and has been practiced so the human does exactly his part at the right time, then the robot does what he was programmed to do. Absolutely ZERO interaction with this robot. No AI at all. Pretty lame actually, and more a fraud and con then robotics

      +thevancouverguy We have made a lot progress with this particular brand of robot. Yes we programmed this particular one to "put on a show" for demonstartion purposes, but these AI beings do react to the environment, they learn, retain info, remember a person by face, voice, and two of our newer models can even identify you by your smell. That's right. your smell. So... while you troll on youtube in your parents basement, We are making Millions, with 100 percent satisfied customers. So go drive your Pinto to your Gas station job, and leave the intelligence to us smart people. I will think of you, when I go home to my robot, In my big house, with my success. Who really got trolled here? Not us at TED. So it must be you.

      thevancouverguy the title did not claim to be an ai robot what it says is robot and this machine is at its roots a robot. The first robots were programmed to preform specific actions. Oh I didn't even know that was that "learning robot", I think they (or someone else) did a talk about it previously, that tech certainly didn't exist 20 years ago, from what I remember, this robot here actually isn't just mindlessly 'preprogrammed', its much smarter than that, it will try not to hurt people, and other stuff like Maude mentioned, if this was a robot from 20 years ago you would have to be exact with the script or it could hurt you, this one learns with rehearsal and makes sure to be gentle, not just on a software level, but this things hardware didn't exist 20 years ago either, but that's a whole other thing..
      Also we didn't have youtube 20 years ago, so I don't see how we could of done this 20 years ago.

    You do not make the public more comfortable around robots by giving it cute gimmicks that imitate a personality. The performer thought he could make his words self-demonstrating via his act, but the tech savvy people would rather cut straight to the technical functionality, and the laymen will have no choice but to accept robots for what they end up being, as long as they are of genuine help.
    Trying to make humans relate to robots before they posess qualities that are genuinely relatable is only going to make them as obnoxious as the Microsoft Office paperclip assistant. However, once they do develop sufficiently complex modus operandi, quirks and other indicators of genuine personality, people will treat them with empathy whether or not they have a cutesy cartoony face.

Good thing we program them against feeling Human like anger, or the dumb would probably be at their wrath. Good tidings to you, and we will continue being millionares from our inventions. ha

      I say i like many others.This comment isnt that GOOD, since most of this is just foolish.
      Nice comment of two parts if brain that is not really functioning, but nothing smart really.
      A comment that id love to see a kind of, is onne that can understand and actually listen to no to anyone that this videos title is a mistake. With both random conversation about the differences of HUMANS and ROBOTS. And thus not needed a robot whos not feel emotions but have high tech features but thus need a robot who feels emotion even tho it has low quality function. As well as the intelligence of it to understand LIFE itself

      Good point. ASIMO does have the ability to climb up stairs, hop on one foot, etc. And of course the low battery thing happened possibly only one time and possibly a mistake or it didn't have the battery power to last. Besides, it was dumb, ASIMO should be known as an innovative robot and an step up to modern technology. Also, letting a device fall down stairs could be useful to test for shock absorbency and how it can protect itself if it is on low power to prevent damage.

      Mikadie Joyce - Bates yeah and I can’t fly an airplane either but if all someone did was sing to me while driving around the runway while I was promised to be flown around the world I would still have the right to be at least a tiny bit ticked. We were promised a robotics demo not a magic show and history of the word ‘robot’ just to pad for time for the fact he truly has nothing to show for it. And if what some of the other comments are saying are true, the robot isn’t even that impressive, and was even built with unreliable and cheap equipment.

    Everybody's like "pfft. so choreographed", but I am like read the descriptions:
    Marco Tempest uses charming stagecraft to demo EDI, the multi-purpose robot designed to work very closely with humans. Less a magic trick than an intricately choreographed performance, Tempest shows off the robot's sensing technology, safety features and strength, and makes the case for a closer human-robot relationship. (Okay, there's a little magic, too.)

    • @peterpiperdiedharper
      @peterpiperdiedharper 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      it was mentioned that it was choreographed. i think people actually expected a "best robot" that would meet their expectations that they made without reading the description.

    • @kustomkure
      @kustomkure 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      peterpiperdiedharper It doesn't matter if it was mentioned or not. Any kid can program the same scripted sequence. People are annoyed by the fact how unoriginal and useless this is given it was titled as the best demo ever. It turned out to be just nothing.

    • @peterpiperdiedharper
      @peterpiperdiedharper 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea, i see. given that it's from TED one kinda expects to be blown away because of so many awesome videos that are in this channel.

    • @kustomkure
      @kustomkure 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      peterpiperdiedharper not exactly, I have seen a lot of poor performances on TED, that's not the point. The thing is that it could be done like 30 years ago. It is not contemporary robotechnics. And if he wanted to really present something new, he could have just shown some realistic and random things the robot can do. I would be blown away easily if he showed the same things but done in real time. If the robot is capable of doing them why the hell wouldn't you want to show them? You know what I mean?
      For example he stands in front of the robot and moves hands, the robot responds, then he stands in the same spot and robot does nothing. Or he speaks to it and it responds, the next minute it doesn't. How do his sensors work? How does it operate in general? Wouldn't you prefer this demo rather than the one in the video? Be honest with me.

    Everyone hating on this video saying it is fake, preprogrammed, etc. maybe. But the point was in what he said. Most of you probably don’t even know how much time and effort it actually takes to program one six axis robot arm, let alone two seven axis arms to act independently but together. Also there were sensors on it, so it did react to the speaker, but not as much as implied. But look at the amount of effort he went through, and just realize... there is more than meets the eye

    A scripted magic show which contains very little essence and practically no point. If the purpose of the presentation was to demonstrate robotic perception and ability to react to changes in the environment, it has failed miserably. Not to say that interactivity wasn't there, just that it didn't matter at all. Everything looked 100% choreographed, and similar automaton without any sensors and no ability to interact would do as well. I was waiting until the last moment for the robot to "break the script" and do at least something interactive. No such luck. Great for a kindergarten party, terrible for TED.

    • @ClayMann
      @ClayMann 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hicham Jaber and it isn't a he. We can nitpick each other but you still missed the main point that this is an industrial robot designed to be used in factories. You came across like you thought this was trying to pretend it was alive even though the demo clearly points out that isn't the case or the point being made.. And of course it's programmed! But I sense this devolving into nothing but a negative exchange so I'll leave you to your pedantic ignorance.

    The annoying thing about this video was just how he pretended that the robot responded to his behavior, and wasn't just following a preprogrammed routine. Like watching an overly enthusiastic magician perform a very weak trick that everyone figured out. I know he just sort of played along, like an act, but it was done in a way that dumbed down the audience IMO. Not really appropriate for TED, especially not with the title "maybe the best robot demo ever". I got kind of disappointed, I expected to be something incredible since I often get 'wow!ed' by some of the stuff and research the TED talker's are presenting. I feel like this was the sort of stuff I would see if I turned on America's got Talent, and maybe it would pass to the next round but then get kicked because there wasn't really much else to it. :'(
