  • That science fiction future where robots can do what people and animals do may be closer than you think. Marc Raibert, founder of Boston Dynamics, is developing advanced robots that can gallop like a cheetah, negotiate 10 inches of snow, walk upright on two legs and even open doors and deliver packages. Join Raibert for a live demo of SpotMini, a nimble robot that maps the space around it, handles objects, climbs stairs -- and could soon be helping you out around the house.

      out of all the ways humanity will inevitably kill itself (environmental issues, nuclear war, etc.), I'd say robotics is probably the least likely. Sure, I foresee us making some terrible weapons with this tech, but it probably won't make the world any different than it is now. There will still be insurgent groups using weapons to oppress others, first world countries probably won't care unless it directly affects them. Nuclear weapons will keep the larger countries from invading each other, and when water levels rise and resources become scarce, we'll either all die together or blow each other back to the stone age.

    this is amazing, the robots are really losing their stiffness, their typical one-move-at-a-time type motion and they move in a pay that seems alive. when the robot was trying to get through the door and the guy was pushing the door closed and it tried again, and the guy pushing it again i thought for a moment the robot would bite at the guy(which would be a scarily smart thing to do) but ofcourse it's not an animal, even though it feels much more like it than most robots.

    I guess the basic and most important things that all these robots should have are image processing and creating a 3d map in its head and planning routes, and all these things will become better and theyre just software, so theyll be standard and copied to every new robot, allowing the rnd to develop the things beyond it

    This is pretty advanced stuff. Problem is these scientists will never ever give up until they have created something they cannot control. A sane mind will tell you they can just be switched off, they have no emotions or feelings or ability to hate, but as soon as you give these machines those abilities, thats when the trouble starts.

    I'm seeing a *lot* of comments about robots rising up like the terminator & causing the end of mankind, which is of course incredibly unrealistic. That being your principle worry about robots is like seeing ultrasonic planes & being principally worried that they will be used to fly around the world really fast and reverse time like superman.
    Here's what you should all be thinking about:
    If there is already a general purpose humanoid robot in existence that can do work at 2/3 the pace of a human, how long until the price point on that comes down enough for them to start replacing tens of millions of workers in the US alone? 2/3 the speed and a small team of full-time technicians makes a lot of business sense if I can replace 5000 salaries.
    And I'm not saying that we should oppose the creation of these robots: that is equally crazy. What I'm saying is, we need to start thinking in a really new way about how we imagine economics. What happens when these robots replace 50% of the factory jobs & self-driving cars replace 50% of the transportation jobs, & there isn't any new job sector that could ever handle that many unemployed people? What happens when there simply aren't & never will be enough jobs to go around? That's a problem that we will have to solve, & it will require us to reverse our ideology on some very passionately-held beliefs; particularly, there will come a time when drawing an income has nothing to do with having a job.
    And if we don't make that shift, then we're going to cause ourselves a lot of pain resisting it. History was my major in university, & if there's one thing that's true, it's that when there is a large-scale comprehensive shift in society (something like the industrial revolution, for instance), it is never a pleasant time for those who live through it no matter how positive the new changes are. We've got one of those tough transition times in our future, & we need to be thinking about how we're going to smooth it out right now.

    • @limbdarkening
      @limbdarkening 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Good comment! Yes, I hate all the dooms-dayers, really stupid. I agree, there's a shift coming, the REAL problem is governments and overpopulation. Sadly, those two things are complicated and can be difficult to solve.

      People aren't scared of robots destroying earth, they are scared of wars that can be fought with robots and how this will probably be the end of mankind. What I mean is, people who control the robots are the main concern

    • @dr.zoidberg8666
      @dr.zoidberg8666 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      That's just not the thing that anybody ought to be worried about right now. Firstly, because we currently live in the most peaceful time in human history, & that shows no signs of slowing down, & secondly because we have already had remorseless, inhuman killing machines for nearly a decade now -- they're called drone operators. And quite frankly, after reading about them, I would prefer that the drones just take care of everything themselves.
      Finally, money is (as it ever has been) the thing to watch. Technological revolutions don't care about war or depressions or any kind of strife; the law of accelerating returns doesn't slow down for anything. We've got several technologies which are accelerating exponentially in terms of cost functionality: computing power, robotics, biotechnology, PV cells, 3D-printing, and yes, AI.
      I was a history major in college, & I remember all of the freshman and sophomore history majors wanted nothing more than to talk about the wars & conflicts, & great battles & how they transformed society. But the fact of the matter is, they didn't. The things that really shook things up; that REALLY caused a lot of suffering *and* a lot of joy were the cultural, social and ESPECIALLY technological revolutions.
      Don't think Terminator. Think that you're a wheelwright at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, & how are you going to adapt to a world after nobody is buying wagon wheels anymore?

    • @CFiHell
      @CFiHell 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Drones aren't robots, they can be controlled from a big distance. "Robots in war" is a lot more advanced. No terminator will be created, but just more weapons that can be created, we don't need more obnoxious weapons on earth as we already have the classical nuclear bomb that is bad enough. And while the "world is in the most peaceful time in human history" statement is correct, governments are still fighting in a massive Cyberwarfare (or getting prepared for it). It basically means that "the most peaceful era" can also be called "the era with the least wars" because there won't be multiple wars, there will only be one single war, and given what a lot of people think---the next war the will be the last.
      even Albert Einstein said "I know not with what weapons WW3 will be fought, but WW4 will be fought with sticks and stones".
      In the end, I'm not saying that robots are necessarily our demise, but there is a decent chance they could be. And even if they're not, countries that dream to become the supreme rulers will probably try to come out with some other weapon to destroy whole nations.

    • @dr.zoidberg8666
      @dr.zoidberg8666 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      And all that being said, the fact is, people are naturally afraid of what they don't understand -- and whenever there's a new invention, dominant power, or cultural force, there's a period of time when nobody understands it.
      For that reason, perfectly rational, reasonable people have been warning of the doom & destruction of our species for millennia for all kinds of different reasons.
      They've been wrong every single time, which is a pretty bad track record. But in addition to that, being afraid of AI isn't going to stop it from being developed. So I say, trash the losing record of doomsday prophecy, look at the overwhelming evidence telling us to be optimistic about the future, & enjoy your life.

      Certainly. In fact there is a TED talk about exactly that. The tech isn't even new, it's been something that's been developed by researchers and hackers alike for a long time now. There are even a few people walking around right now with robotic limbs that are like something right out of a sci-fi movie. As I understand the really hard part right now is coming up with control systems that work not just for the robotic limb but also for the patient. Each patient is an entirely different case.

      A robot must not injure a human being through action or inaction.
      A robot must obey the given orders, as long as it doesn't conflict the first law.
      A robot must protect its own existence as long as it doesn't conflict the first and second law.
      These are the laws of Asimov so it's Sci-Fi, but a lot of the ethics of A.I is based on this.

      Resonance of Illumination - Ambition of Void What if people owned robots to send them to work?
      Maybe unemployment won't disappear and the owners won't have to spend so much money on buying so many robots for his business.
      I'll buy my robot today, send it to work, let it sleep over there or even let it even work over night!
      I agree but we must never become lazy nor ever lose our survival skills.
      Let's never become spoil and always remain a strong human race.
      Let's use the future free time to evoke our minds to become smarter and bodies to be stronger as well as becoming more healthy to increase life span!
      We must make some things for free so this won't affect people.
      This way people won't become be ripped off their survival eco system in the system we live in.
      Also this way people will still want to work for bigger things in life with only a few things for free.
      Or maybe everyone could get 1$-5$-10$-20$-30$ for free a day but depends on the income of the robots and the amount of robots in the world cause the owners gotta eat too.
