You can use any wire with this technique, but its best if you use bare copper wire or silver filled wire then you won't need to cover with copper tape.
Hello. So i start to try soft soldering but i have a problem. The piece stay always a little black in the solder and sometimes the copper tape unstick of the gemstone. It is so frustrated
Hi i can understand it is really frustrating in the start . Make sure your gemstone is clean from all oils. Work fast don't work in the same spot. Lot of heat at one place can make the tape off. The black can be cleaned with isopropyl alcohol. It happens when flux get burn from too much heat. I am still practicing this technique do take a lot of patience. But once you learn it ,its fun :).

No only copper tape.
what part is molten?
