    I’d say with all of these you got it real close, but honestly the eq pedal with the od3 sounded better than the actual pedal you were trying to copy to my ear. Good job and it’s time to buy an od3 and an eq pedal!

      Thanks! I feel I struggled most with the Bluesbreaker with it's more saturated higher frequencies, which the OD-3 just doesn't really do. But like you say, I kind of like that cleaner high end in the OD-3 a lot of the time anyway. Thanks for commenting!

      @@MichaelBanfieldGuitar I think you nailed the tone of the blues breaker but it was less saturated. To me that’s a good thing cuz I’m generally not a fan heavily saturated tones.

      Thanks, it's my benchmark overdrive pedal that I use to test and compare other OD pedals. Always seems to perform well, especially into amps set clean. I think it's a good choice for using with an EQ pedal like this because the OD-3 has a nice full frequency response as a starting point.

    I started doing this myself. I got the idea from that Automotone pedal thing. All I first had was an EQ and a boost. Then I got a couple of overdrives and experimented with the EQ before and after. Realized after was better, then realized I personally only need to the one overdrive (an OCD) and the EQ.

I just roll off the high end at 6K and it really takes care of the bee hive buzz. From there the sky is the limit on how you want to shape the mids. I've also used it in the FX Loop of several amps to change the character when in a pinch.

      Yes it has a 3 band EQ with the ability to shape the Mid frequency. This still pales in comparison to a 10 band, which lets you individually shape specific frequencies and you get more control over the Bass and Treb as well.

      @@dreyn7780 lol what a dumb comment. All these "3rd generation" pedals you're probably talking about.... I guarantee if they're analog, they're based off of an old design. There's only a certain amount of ways to clip and EQ a circuit. And generally, the older components were superior than modern Chinese made ones, which is about all that's available to builders nowadays since Panasonic, Mitsubishi, and Texas Instruments don't make that stuff anymore. There's a reason why Boss pedals are used by more pros than any other manufacturer. And it's not even close. Saying they're an inferior product is laughable.

    Great video.
    EQ pedals can also be used to shape the sound of pick-ups. They can make a Tele single-coil can be made to sound like a P90 or even a PAF, and vice versa. They can also be used to shape the tone of your amp. You can't exactly make a Black Face Fender sound like a Marshal or Vox, but you can use them to make it sound more like on them, and that greatly expands the utility of your amp. All in all, an EQ pedal is one of the most versatile pedals one can have.

    A decade (or even two) ago there was an article on the internet that made the case that any guitar sound could be emulated with this chain : Distortion -> EQ -> Distortion -> EQ -> Distortion -> EQ
    Seems like you're pretty much proving that the first Distortion -> EQ pair is true. (The distortion pedal pair... the other two pairs would pretty much be the amp's preamp + EQ Stack and the amp's power amp and speaker.
    Throw compression in, in the right spots and it's a pretty flexible rig. (At least in the digital domain where you can easily stack as many copies of a plugin as you want. With real analog stuff it could get expensive, fast, LOL!)

    I love this. Instant subscribe. If nothing else, this proves the point that your essentials - guitar, amp and the speaker contour the final sound far more than any of the overdrives...all these sounds have something in common and I bet it is mostly due to response of the amp/speaker and the way you set them.
    You have not matched any of the sounds 100% but still you got the basic character and in many cases even better/more usable sound in my opinion. I wonder what you would do with a 10 band eq or with an additional eq before the drive.

    I'm convinced on everything except the ODR-1. The Nobels sounds cleaner, more even. Even equalized the OD-3 sounds a little fat in the mids.

    Tom Bukovac uses his EQ pedal just like this but uses his for changing his Guitar tone to make one guitar sound like other models, there's a great video on some Guitar Mag YT Page showing him doing this.

    Great video! Eq+od3 could mimic almost everything ...except OCD - to my ears ocd is stil sounds "creamier".

      Thanks! Yeah the compression and saturation is definitely different on the OCD, although it sounded very similar in the room at the time, you can hear the difference in the recorded sound. Thanks for commenting!

    EQ + OD3 does everything imho. I love the amazing range of sounds you can get from those two as you so wonderfully demonstrate. :)
    Edit: 100% need to upgrade the opamps in the older GE-7's to NE5534P's though. Much too noisy otherwise. I hear the newer made GE-7's with all SMD components are a lot better for noise thankfully.

      IME the newer SMT ones are indeed quieter and sound better, I had an old one and a new one, I compared them, and sold the older one.

    Interesting video! I had an OD-3 but found it had far too much compression, which killed any dynamics, and I also had a GE-7, which added a load of hiss/white noise when the sliders were moved more than a few dB (which you didn't do), although I know of a mod that corrects this. In any case, I sold both those pedals.

      I have an XTS modded ge-7 and it’s the best pedal I own. The modded version is certainly worth it

    The SD-1 at the start sounded the most different, i think i prefer that sound of added asymmetric clipping on the SD-1 to everything else, just gave it something extra of interest.

      @MichaelBanfieldGuitar  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I know what you mean, I heard it as being almost a little more distortion like when compared to the others, a bit more lively. Although into a driven amp I hear less of a difference. Thanks for commenting!

    Modeling is nothing less than equing. With 1 or 2 good parametric equalizers u can dial in almost
    😎 every sound u like.

    This is so awesome. Last week during my guitar lessons I realised that the kind of pedal I need is a simple overdrive. My teacher has a lot different pedals on the board for his students. For the last song we were playing last three weeks (heavy fuzz bluesrock) I played through the Boss BD2. It sounded soo nice and round with a fuzzy feeling. I think it fits in my style. I was always focused on distortions (because I love metal). But for the music I play: (blues)rock, pop and a lot of regular guitar exercises. I don't need a heavy fancy distortion metalish pedal. And during searching a lot of info about the BD2, the OD3 came in sight. So I am in doubt, the BD2 or OD3? Or both! I have a MXR EQ pedal. Maybe I should get a second hand OD3.
    Is it possible to use the OD3 as a attenuator?
    I also own the DOD Carcosa Fuzz. Nice pedal but sometimes I struggle for the tones I want in that specific moment.

    I need to do this kind of experimentation the opposite way, to see if I can get my OD-2 to sound more like an OD-3; bring back some of that shelved bass and cut some of the mid hump.

  • @bluwng
    @bluwng 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Next experiment, using same pedals, get a humbucker sound from a single coil and vice versa.

      You'll most likely want the EQ before the overdrive. Bet you'll find most of the tone difference lies in the midrange.

    as an alternative to the eq > drive, using an eq > preamp like the benson, can give you a lot more flexibility than the eq > OD-3

    Did you notice any added noise or hiss with that boss EQ pedal? I have been reading nothing but bad reviews for those saying they're extremely noisy but I also heard a couple years back they finally fixed that problem. Before that everybody had to have a modded so they would get rid of the noise.
