  • A look at the real life lawmen who took down Bonnie & Clyde.
From director John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side), THE HIGHWAYMEN follows the untold true story of the legendary lawmen who brought down Bonnie and Clyde. When the full force of the FBI and the latest forensic technology aren’t enough to capture the nation’s most notorious criminals, two former Texas Rangers (Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson) must rely on their gut instincts and old school skills to get the job done. THE HIGHWAYMEN also stars Kathy Bates, John Carroll Lynch, and Kim Dickens.

@Rusty Shackleford While the car was stopped, Oakley shot Barrow in the head. Clyde's foot fell off the clutch and the car slowly moved forward. In earlier incidences, Barrow and Parker were given multiple chances to surrender but the earlier weapons by the officers couldn't penetrate the automobile's thick metal.

Great movie! Better than most theatrical releases I've seen in the past year. I like how Bonnie & Clyde were barely shown in the movie and they were referenced as the true murderers that they were. Stellar cast and a great period accurate production. More movies like this please!

That was a great move on the part of the film makers. It was mentioned several times how lawmen would hesitate based on how young and innocent they looked only to be murdered. More than once you had it stated or shown how young/small they were, most prominently when the rangers found their clothes. When you finally see their faces the audience has the same shock as all the lawmen they had killed before; "they are just kids."
      Great piece of film making.

I haven't watched the movie, just saw these little short takes. But, they don't appear to be historically accurate. They took Henry Methvin out of the car in the scene with the motorcycle cops. They portray Frank Hammer as nice and morally righteous man not the sadistic "shoot and ask questions later" man he was. He killed way more people than Clyde Barrow as a judge, jury & executioner. Bonnie & Clyde weren't big time bank robbers. They robbed Piggly Wiggly grocery stores, gas stations and an occasional bank. Their largest haul was only a couple thousand dollars. They weren't nationally know until the bushwhacking by Frank Hammer & crew.

@@michaelhammond7980 Just after the Sweetwater ambush, one of the brothers leveled off at the running ambusher and Frank Hamer stopped him from shooting the retreating man. That was Frank Hamer. Not a executioner. The reason the false scene is in the movie is because that is what was known at the time. That Clyde and Bonnie gunned down two police officers and Bonnie shot the still breathing officer in the face and laughed about it. Later in history, we know that is probably not true.

That behavior is no different than today. The Boston Marathon Bomber had women sending him proposals in jail as did the Menendez brothers. There is an aspect of humanity which is attracted to young dangerous people, making them out to be stars. It is not right, but it happens.
The issue gets even worse when some members of the media portray them as Robin Hood type criminals, stealing from the banks which were foreclosing on properties and giving to the poor. The movie did a great job of showing this repulsive attraction and then countering it. Ma telling the press that they had "killed a gas station attendant for $4", Hammer relating how they had executed lawmen leaving his family to go hungry and homeless to the gas station attendant who wouldn't talk.
If you look back you will find this behavior throughout human history.

    Two issues :
Manny tells Frank that he has a problem with killing men without fair warning fairly early in the film, and that they dont do that, Then much later in the film Manny tells the men playing poker how they shot over 50 sleeping Mexicans one night.
Issue 2 is when the police are collecting evidence at the scene of the Grapevine murders they are collecting in white plastic 5 gallon spackle buckets. White plastic spackle buckets were not invented until 1965 a full 31 years after the Grapevine murders.

"When Frank Hamer was put on the job 100 days later, Bonnie and Clyde were already dead."
Soooooo, they DIDN'T help stop Bonnie and Clyde?

Clyde was inept but incredibly lucky and Bonnie never killed anyone. When they make a movie about them they always present them in the best light, while demonizing the lawmen that killed them. This movie does the opposite. The truth, as usual, is in the middle somewhere.

Just what we like to see a duo that's just as ruthless, heartless and cold blooded as the criminals they are stalking, there is nothing as ruthless as a good ole fashion ambush and putting a couple of rabid dogs out of their misery.

The movie did not glorify Bonnie and Clyde or Frank and Manny .
It did not sugar coat what Bonnie Clyde did who they murdered and who they used .
Though, like today, some criminals seem to be get notoriety , popularity , especially in movies, those days in the 30s were not by any means politically correct.
Costner and Harrilson played their characters perfectly.
Sadly, we now have art imitating life that gloifys criminal activities and the worse side life

To bad Frank and Texas Rangers couldn't go after the Klu Klux Klan in Texas like this.

It was excellent. Not some ridiculous “politically correct” mix of stooges doing super human feats with the aid of computers.
