I've killed two alocasias before. I finally decided to get another one, but it got mites right away! It took a couple weeks of consistently doing damage control, plus putting her into a terracotta pot to get her happy again. I water her thoroughly about once a week and give her just a bit of water a few times a week. I'm also sure to keep her in high humidity. So much work, but it's so satisfying to see her thriving!
@@ghengis430 all of mine only has ever had tap water mixed super thrive 😬 and not a death yet or a crispy leaf. I swear folks scared me bad saying not to buy them but I have not experienced this. Well in the very first beginning with my large one but once I moved it from my bathroom to my walk in closet that seemed to fix my crisping edges some how
It’s crazy how different plants can grow so differently in different environments bc my micans in an 8 inch hanging pot. Big thick and lush! I’ve had it for 4 years now grown from 4 cuttings I got in a mystery box. I have them growing all over my apartment in NYC climbing the walls. They don’t like bright light and they don’t like to dry out.
Love this video! ❤😂 Top of my list is Croton, any type, and I have the climate for them. They are far too dramatic and look awful if they decide to leaf drop, because they did not like your hairstyle one day.
I’m with you about being over high maintenance plants! And accepting that some are just not going to do well in your climate. I want to enjoy my plants, not stress about how to keep them alive. 😂 The way you describe Micans is how I feel about Tradescantia. Grows like a weed, but requires constant chopping and propping to keep it looking nice. I’m over them lol. I keep my Micans in a corner that’s a little more shady, so it doesn’t grow as fast, but stays pretty compact.
I agree with much of what you said here. Especially about Hoya, Gloriosum and others. With Alocasia, I have the Pink Dragon and the Dragon Scale. These are very persnickity plants. I had the Black Velvet, 2 actually, they both died. With the DS and the PD, neither one likes their leaves touching ANYTHING! Not touching a light cord hanging behinds them, the leaves of their neighboring plants OR the pots of their neighboring plants or even their own! The will get ugly spots from touching anything!!! But having said that, just because it has died back does not mean it is dead. The PD came back after I thought it was gone and now it has many leaves and even a few pups. Sometimes it's finding that sweet spot for a plant. Other times it's not worth the aggravation. But I highly recommend getting a moisture meter!! That will ease alot of the stress you are feeling about some of these plants, and you could maybe enjoy more of them. But on the other hand, you have over 500 plants, just get rid of the ones that don't want to be a team player. I LOVE Calatheas!! Put them in a self watering pot!! I started buying indoor grow lights just for my Calatheas! But a self watering pot is a fill it and forget it vessel. They are the one plant I will go the extra mile for.
I found this video very entertaining. However, I want to say that Hoya are one of my favorite plants. If you want them to thrive you need to keep therm indoors, this way they are not subjected to rainy or dry seasons. As with most plants you need to put in the work for them to do well. I agree some are more difficult than others. As for the Micans, you are right. They do grow like weeds. I have a very large one that was crawling all over the walls. I used to propagate what I cut off. Now I just throw the cuttings away. For plants that loves water. Get self watering planter pots. I have almost all of my plants in self watering pots, except for some of the ones outside. I understand your dilemma because of your climate. Alocasia, are spider mite magnets. They test your patience for sure. Nice video. Maybe invest in some cactus plants. Calathias are horrible!
Oooh I’m so glad I found your channel! You’re hilarious btw. And even the plants you show that you say look bad look well cared for to me! I don’t like calatheas. The patterns on their leaves bother me, it brings out some primitive fear that I inherited from my prehistoric ancestors against poisonous bugs or something idk how to explain it. I know some people find them beautiful but I personally avoid.
I feel the same about calatheas, also alocasias, I've owned and killed both several times but I've also given calatheas away (the prayer plant one) as it made me feel uncomfortable looking at it. It's weird, isn't it? Lol
I totally agree on so many of these plants and the reasons they do not thrive in your area. I have a different set of house conditions. Hot summers bitter cold winters and dark gloomy winter days. I am with you 100%. If a plant does not always bring you Joy it is time to pass it on to some one else.
New subscriber here...West Virginia, USA. My jaw hit the floor when you said hoys! lol I've given up on begonias, "string of's", some philos, and tradescantia's! NEVER AGAIN! I really enjoyed your video...looking forward to the next one.
The sound fx when you mentioned hoya perfectly matched my reaction😂. Hoya need more water than I thought, I grow mine in self-watering pots with aroid-ish substrate or semi-hydro.
I have a GORGEOUS micans! I wanted it to fill out and grow bigger leaves, so i used to prop it to add back a lot. I also let it climb a trellis, so the leaves aren't small and ugly. I'm also an alocasia girlie! I have like 11 (and there's definitely a few more on the wishlist)! My oldest is 18mos. I have the care down to a science. They're an easy genus for me!
Gen x here but ill see what you have to say 😉💚💚💚 my shinglers started growing up the walls and ceiling but im ok with it. We live in different types of areas bc my hoyas do well. My philodendrons are some that are growing up my walls and the leaves are getting massive 😊 absolutely beautiful 💚 i wish you could have that too! Try terrarium for thirsty ones or humid lovers maybe...
❤ I love your absolute honesty! You are so refreshing!! 💚 The backlash from negative reviews can be brutal! 😱 Some people have forgotten that we actually eat some of these plants. It's called "SALAD" 🥗 I look forward to more of your videos. 😁 Thank you 🙏 from a fellow plant collector across the 🌎 globe. Canada 🇨🇦
Just discovered your channel. I love Alocasias, but I agree with you on the Calathea. I have a Rufibarba, which is all I can manage. It's in my bathroom, so it gets the humidity and I use a watering globe, otherwise I'd forget to water it. I also use a water conditioner because the water where I live is very chlorinated.
Genuinely shocked when I heard hoyas :O They're some of my absolutely favourite plants - easy-going and healthy. Never had a problem with overwatering - just keep them in a small pot and let them properly dry up between each watering. However, I live in a temperate climate and I'm not familiar with monsoons. Maybe the high humidity makes them prone to mildew?
Omg finally someone speaking FACTS about hoya! They're so fussy, I only have three but I think I'm going to get rid of them all soon because they annoy the heck out of me 😂 And yesss micans, mine looks so scraggly. Might try to grow it on a moss pole instead of having it hanging 🤔
I completely agree with all your choices except Hoyas!! I have 10 different varieties and I just love them and are extremely easy for me but I’ve been collecting houseplants for 13 years now lol
I thought I was the only one who thought my Micans is looking a hot mess! It was so pretty at first, now like you said, it looks like a daggon weed!!! I would not recommend! Loved this video!💚💚💚
Aww, I really like my alocasias! Most of my established ones have 4 or more leaves and are always giving me corms. Best advice for me is to leave them where they like the conditions, maintain abt 50% humidity, and water them about one every 10 days if you have a nice well-drainin, semi-hydro or amendment-heavy soil mix. And my never-agains are ANY philodendron, most palms, homalomena, and calathea.
with the gloriosum (and all the crawlers, really) it is possible to force the rhizome to curve so that you can keep it in the same pot longer. However, doing so stunts the leaves so they won't reach that huge size (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). My gloriosum should have a rhizome about 43 cm long but I keep forcing it to curve to keep it in the 20 cm pot. The leaves are smaller but the pot looks full so I think it is a fair trade off. It doesn't solve the heat problem, though they can be grown as understory plants in south Florida and they don't seem to mind the heat (days regularly 35 C in the summer) but this may be because they are growing in the ground where the roots stay cooler than in a pot.
Your are 100% correct about the Homalomena. I grow mine in a self watering pot and I keep it in a shaded/low light spot. It does well in these conditions anything different and it struggles. I live in coastal Georgia, USA.
I have absolutely no issues with ANY of these plants. i have all of them in my home, some require more care than others, but i have no issues with any of them. I still watched the video and i do agree with some of the stuff you said
This happened in every hobby. Shut down & shut in turned us into a culture of hobby freaks with most having excess income to splurge. Scale models, weight lifting & home gym equipment, cars, plants, table top gaming, painting, books, knitting, needle point, lego, video games, computer hardware... Etc. We're getting back to pre-2019 prices with some inflation adjustment. BTW I recently fell into aroids and tropical plants after growing orchids for the past 15 is years. Prices are so so so much better and really rare plants are easy to find via quality growers. Makes it more enjoyable for somebody new to the hobby. Less stress on feeling like you have to mother your plants with paranoia for fear your insanely expensive plants will die off. Orchid experience has me relaxed about our new anthurium wendlingeri. Even if it returns to Gaia, replacement is easy and cheap.
I agree with all of this. I also do not like moss poles....too much time and so much effort to them..I had 2 once....no more! I also won't buy the hoyas, calatheas, alocasia either!
I feel like half of velvet-leaved philodendrons are the easiest, and the other half are the hardest. But, you never know which ones are actually going to like your home conditions 😂
Poor alocasia! 😂. I must have a gift for them or somethng because i SUCK at keeping most plants alive but my amazonica has become my superstar! I got it when it was 7 i ches and now it has 17 leaves. Almost a year since i got it and it has flowered twice. I keep it under a grow light. I seriously dont think i am a talented keeper. I am just as amazed but this one has been super easy to care for. I also keep it moist at all times and i keep a layer of moss on the surface of the soil.
i got an alcoasia ina a rescue mystery box it had three leaves it lost all but the most beautiful one (2x my head in size). i neglected it all winter putting it in relatively low light. it went through 3 moves and its growing finally a new leaf :D
😂😂 I enjoyed this video too much! Unpopular opinion: I’ve never liked Hoyas! With the exception of the Obavata, I’ve never seen one that I’d care to have
I got it on the alocasia I put mine in a glass vessel with a layer or two of leca the rest of moss and they all thrive. They do not like to dry out or be wet or be compact. This has been my success and they go bonkers here! That gloriosum ugh!!!
For me, the plant that I can't seem to figure out the care requirements for is the Geo plant. Bought it last spring and it's almost dead. Almost. I have no idea how/why, I'm genuinely not sure if it's over or underwatering. Not sure if I'm gonna try again. Maybe in the future, we'll see. Calathea on the other hand, I have one (the easy one) and it's genuinely doing great (in the humidity of British climate). Otherwise I stick with succulents xD
I agree with everything but Philodendron micans. It get leggy as any vine but it grows so fast you can hard prune it once a year and have a bushy plant. Small Monstera are more frustrating in this regard. I have not a lot of experience with Hoya tho. BTW, i'm curious if you grow any cactus with you climate and if they bloom in reverse in your situation. As far as I know, even the more tropical cacti like a warmer rain season and a colder dry season.
I plan to do a cacti and succulent tour in the channel soon . I have a collection of those and they absolutely flourish during the hot dry season. A lot of them flower too, but some absolutely do not like the hot weather and I stay away from those. Remember I grew my Micans in the tropics outdoors, they grow so unruly here and you will need to hard prune them very often to look decent and it can be exhausting
I have black thumb and killed so many plants from succulents, herbs until indoor plants, and Hoya krimson princess is soooo aljve and thriving from 5 leaves last year now 4 vines and keep propagating now with 40 leaves. I guess bcoz i killed a lot of plants, i searched the hoya needs,, soil is 35% coco coir, 10,% perlite, 30% cactus & succlent potting mix, 10% orchid bark and 5% worm casting, sprinkle of slow released fertilizer. Pls try it, i have hoya krimson queen, matilde and pubicalyx, these are the only hoyas i dare to have 😅😅
Hi.so important to get what YOU like-not what others tell you is a "must-have". I am very independent and hate when someone tells me what I "should " do! Pass this on!!
What I noticed in my collection and those of friends is that everyone settles on an aroid that likes their enviorment. I got rid of most philos and monsteras that weren't sentimental because they grow stupid fast. Anthuriums and Hoyas are slow, tough and have the most foliar interest imo. Alocasias are too inconsistent, they either do really well and suddenly crash, or get too gigantic and unruly when happy, coin flip on varigation
When I see a plant I like on instagram, I read about it before making the decision to buy or not. Some plants really are just not suited for some environments, and if it would take a lot of effort to just grow something indoors, it's not the plant for me.
My solution to most of these plants has been getting into terrariums. Doesn't work for large plants (as not willing to get super super large terrariums).
I won’t buy a pepperomi I tried bright light letting it almost fully dry out they just don’t like me . Also crotons and Boston ferns . Also Draceana which is prone to brown leaves . Also diffenbacia it looks terrible and gets pissy of it fully dried out and can get crispy leaves and drop leaves .
Dude, you had me laughing the whole time. Thank you and for the most part you are RIGHT. But I have to keep trying with Marantaceaces and Plhilodendrons. I have to get it. I really appreciater and want those kinds of plants in my midst. OK, maybe I like a little stress. Take care now. Jesus Loves you and your family Handsome. John 3:16-18
Homalomenas are so gorgeous but like you said they can only thrive in a rain forest 😭 they need constant humidity/fine mist environment with indirect medium light which is harder than it sounds to provide!! I bought a Selby that died in like 5 business days! Never again 😅😅
alocasias and calatheas are beautiful, but i'm still new to indoor plant care so i'm refusing to myself to have them at home until i know how to balance watering and humidity with my current plants... i just purchased a very small hoya (hoya picta puber) and i'm totally new to it, it's leaves are becoming flatter and flatter i don't know why lol... we'll see. For what i'm experimenting hoyas (or this hoya) are not beginner friendly as i just have it and i already struggle with it, when i don't with a lot of philodendrons, pothos and peperomias xD
Had to name my Alocasia Regal Shield Tyrese after shouting at him one day, "What more do you want from meeeee!". Tyrese currently has 2 leaves and I'm counting my blessings 😅

I’ve killed so many calatheas! I figured out they r just bougie. The 3 I have left have their own humidifier and grow light and no more crispy tips.
Everyone says that 😂
Mine has neither and are thriving and living happily
I am so done with calatheas!! DONE!!! They are so bougie!!!
Never again, all have now gone over to plant heaven RIP🪴🙏🏾
They don't like tap water, and need lots of perlite in the pot. Mine gets rainwater, no dry ends. It may well die though, but it's happy so far.😂
You are right about them not liking to dry out . They grow like an unruly weed here
My Micans is 2feet from a window. It will lose its color with too much light. Never let dry out. 🪴Happy Planting🌿
I bust out laughing so many times. Living for these plant roasts😂
The way you describe Micans is how I feel about Tradescantia.
What moisture meter do you recommend? Mine stopped working.
Lol
my 3 'no thank you ma'am, never again'-plants are alocasia, calathea and fittonia
I totally agree on so many of these plants and the reasons they do not thrive in your area. I have a different set of house conditions. Hot summers bitter cold winters and dark gloomy winter days. I am with you 100%. If a plant does not always bring you Joy it is time to pass it on to some one else.
I’m cracking up 😂 you are so right! Those plants are pain in the butte! I agree 💯 who would have thought plants were so dramatic! 😂
New subscriber here...West Virginia, USA.
My jaw hit the floor when you said hoys! lol
I've given up on begonias, "string of's", some philos, and tradescantia's! NEVER AGAIN!
I really enjoyed your video...looking forward to the next one.
Thank you 💚💚💚
The sound fx when you mentioned hoya perfectly matched my reaction😂.
Hoya need more water than I thought, I grow mine in self-watering pots with aroid-ish substrate or semi-hydro.
lol I’ve given up on trying to master them , I will just admire y’all’s collection of them from afar
I will not stand for this Philodendron Micans slander! They are one of the few troopers to survive my naturally plant murdering care XD
He called them an invasive weed! 😂😂😂😂 I love mine!!
The backlash from negative reviews can be brutal! 😱
Some people have forgotten that we actually eat some of these plants. It's called "SALAD" 🥗
I look forward to more of your videos. 😁
Thank you 🙏 from a fellow plant collector across the 🌎 globe.

You are so nice and funny love your attitude thank you sharing ❤
This was hilarious 😂❤ & my micans does look rather scrawny 😂
Well I’m not even surprised! Thanks so much for watching and commenting
Bought once. It got on the struggle bus on a one way trip to the rubbish bin.
I absolutely love micans! I have several and they look great
I live in nyc and my philodendron mican is growing nicely under a grow light. I have no problems with it😊
Totally enjoyed this video 😂 so funny ❤
Thank you ! I’ll make more like this
Loved your video!!! ❤ Honestly I don’t follow male plant content, but I do love your personality!! Subscribed!!
Ayye..i screamed..."Admire them from other ppl IG pages"
Just found your channel amd really love it! You are very funny, and honest, both are qualities i like so youve gained a new subscriber 😊
Omg finally someone speaking FACTS about hoya! They're so fussy, I only have three but I think I'm going to get rid of them all soon because they annoy the heck out of me 😂
And yesss micans, mine looks so scraggly. Might try to grow it on a moss pole instead of having it hanging 🤔
I tried the moss pole thing and still the same results lol . And yes Hoya are annoyinggggg , ! I had to keep it real
😂😂 omg my Micans is so dusty! I was just thinking I need to chop her up but apparently this is just how they are 🤦🏾♀️
lol they will always eventually look dusty. You hard prune or start all over again but I’m done doing all of that lol
You're hilarious! I appreciate the info, and I'm going to pray gloriosum likes the climate of my office enough, since I just bought some!!
New subscriber! I love your content; I’ve got my weekend binge-watching list ready!
Yaay thank you !!
with the gloriosum (and all the crawlers, really) it is possible to force the rhizome to curve so that you can keep it in the same pot longer.
Loved the video. If you want to try an easy going alocasia, i can really recommend the alocasia bambino. Such a low maintenance plant! Def my favorite
I’ve tried that and unalived it lol
Tradescantia is one I’ll never buy again. If I ever do it will be the plain green and only as ground cover which is how they are meant to grow
Your are 100% correct about the Homalomena. I grow mine in a self watering pot and I keep it in a shaded/low light spot. It does well in these conditions anything different and it struggles. I live in coastal Georgia, USA.
Well there you go . I’m glad you found the right conditions for it
Very enjoyable vid! Greetings from an alocasia- and calathia-free household 😅
I don’t want problems, I want peace ☮️
Just found your channel. Love your vibe. 🤣
Thank you 😊
I have absolutely no issues with ANY of these plants. i have all of them in my home, some require more care than others, but i have no issues with any of them.
My peace lilies are stressing me tbh, i ve done everything, they are just drama queens 😂
😂😂😂😂. Hoyas are something else. I agree.
lol yes they aree
Oh no! I just started my journey with hoyas and bought four from Gabriella Plants. They're on their way 😬
😂😂 I enjoyed this video too much! Unpopular opinion: I’ve never liked Hoyas! With the exception of the Obavata, I’ve never seen one that I’d care to have
Same obavata is the only calathea I own, it’s pretty easy to grow
As someone who exclusively grows Hoya, I feel some sort of way about your decision, though I understand. 😊
I’ve shared this video on my community post. I’ve also subscribed 🙋🏽♀️
I had all those before and agree on the first three never again will by them! I have the last one its new 3weeks or so.
Oh my goodness I love my Crimson Princess lol .. she's beautiful and I forget to even check on her for weeks at a time
Urgh I’m jealous 😭
Lol I almost fell off my chair when you started talking about alocasias ! They are the bane of my plant collection. Great video ❤️
@hwilson8572 mine too . Thanks for watching 💚
I wish I could call you... you are absolutely hellarious...had me laughing out loud ...I agree totally
I'm new here and I like it!
Pls try it, i have hoya krimson queen, matilde and pubicalyx, these are the only hoyas i dare to have 😅😅
What can i pot with a snakeplant outside? I live Texas
Any succulents
I CACLKED at the alocasia icon bit 😂
Hi.so important to get what YOU like-not what others tell you is a "must-have". I am very independent and hate when someone tells me what I "should " do! Pass this on!!
This is very good advice
What I noticed in my collection and those of friends is that everyone settles on an aroid that likes their enviorment. I got rid of most philos and monsteras that weren't sentimental because they grow stupid fast. Anthuriums and Hoyas are slow, tough and have the most foliar interest imo. Alocasias are too inconsistent, they either do really well and suddenly crash, or get too gigantic and unruly when happy, coin flip on varigation
lol, I do want a hoya (it's native in Malaysia)... but I think you convinced me to get a larger one instead of cuttings :D
lol yeah definitely get an established one over a cutting
Its with all the cuttings and Baby Plants. Buy rather a bigger one
Great video!!!
New plant loving sub here from Spokane Valley Wa 😊may your day be totally blessed
Oh wow thank you and you too 💚
No lies told in this video
When I see a plant I like on instagram, I read about it before making the decision to buy or not. Some plants really are just not suited for some environments, and if it would take a lot of effort to just grow something indoors, it's not the plant for me.
The springtail is cause of my losing.Check the soil, periodically use insecticid.
The Alocaia seems to like a deep pot and no direct sunlight, watering when the top soil dries
I totally agree with all of those!
Tyrese currently has 2 leaves and I'm counting my blessings 😅
love this video! keep it up!
Piper crocatum and cissus discolor.....beautiful plants. Ut they stress me tf out i get the alocasia hate but heare out....semi hydro. Thr biggest thing i hate about them are the spidermites
I’m surprised anthuriums aren’t on this list. I CANNOT with them. Easiest Alocasia is the Frydek! My queen is Bridgeton bad okurrrr
Me watching your video a week after having bought my Gloriosum and Micans... 🤔
But I have to say that I am a bit confused. You seem so mad when *exposing the real nature* of those drama queens. 😅 But yours still look so nice. 😂😂 Except the hoyas (maybe..) They look nice as well but I can understand why you are disappointed.
I haven't watched the whole video yet. But I'm already enjoying it so much 😊
Hehe hope you watched and enjoyed it till the very end
