You shouldn’t be disappointed, it happens to all of us. The fact you are able to maintain composure and handle that scenario with virtue, integrity and honesty to the viewers is what makes your channel valuable. We know you aren’t going to water down your mistakes with excuses, and put blame where it shouldn’t.
I’m glad we were able to see even you deal with that situation. Better luck tomorrow!

Thanks for taking us along. Nice stalk getting in range of buck that big. I used a tripod and a trekking pole for standing shots. Tuck the end of the pole up under the butt of the stock and angle the tip into the ground to get more stability.

Randy, entertaining as usual, missing is part of hunting. Last year in Nebraska, I opted to not take a nice antelope buck at 344 yards because I wasn't comfortable with the shot. Next morning I was able to get on my bipod and make a perfect shot (double lung) at 314 yards because I was comfortable. Thanks for the honesty best of luck

  • @scottschell8555
    @scottschell8555 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Randy, Three things: The sub-tension of the duplex reticle in your scope can be used to confirm laser range finder data or to estimate when you can't get a good reading. For example, a buck's ears are around 6 inches long and top of back to the sternum around 15 inches on Wyoming bucks. I used that for years before the days of laser rangefinders. If you shoot a rifle that generates any significant recoil, shooting with the forend placed directly on a hard surface, like top of that tripod, the shot will go higher than if you have in your hand or some padding on the rest. You can test this at the range for yourself. If you have a shot that you felt should have been good and you miss you need to stop and set up a target and confirm your rifle is still zeroed in before continuing.

Have you tried an Arca-swiss rail on your spotting scope and on your rifle. To swap takes less than 10 seconds and the rifle will be more stable than just resting on the V between the handle and the spotting scope. I've been there and wanted a stable rest for those longer shots. My antelope was 345 this year. Glad I made the switch.

I know this is a business for you, but also a deep passion, You should put it all in perspective. For one, you're in an age group that a lot of other men are in, or about to enter into, bad health or mobility issues. For some that could mean the need for a walker, or worse yet, an Assisted Living Facility. Bottom line, no more hunting. Second, you're getting to be outdoors , taking in that Nevada dry air, blue skies and scenic settings. Three, there should be a tomorrow for you to get back out there. For me, it's never about actually getting a deer, javelina, duck, squirrel, or whatever. I mean that. It's always about getting out, enjoying the fellowship with the other hunters and friends, and taking in God's beautiful creation. If I see something, that's almost enough. If I harvest a deer, then that's great too. My dad passed this last November of Parkinson's at the age of 84. Up until about age 79, he hunted until he just couldn't walk through the woods anymore without falling. Climbing a stand was off limits. The last 5-6 years of his life, hunting was the main thing he really missed the most. After any of my hunts, when I'd stop by to visit him, that was one of the first things that he wanted to hear about- and I could see the joy in his eyes as he relived similar hunts. Throughout those last years, and just before he passed, he encouraged me to keep hunting. Enjoy it while you can he'd say. Anyway, not preaching, just want everyone to keep things in perspective, especially with the way the world is today.

WHAT AN AWESOME VIDEO!!! At 11:19 I thought you hit it way left, but watched it over a couple of times and it was a clear miss, (low and behind). That is sometimes the way hunting goes.
I'm glad you shot. If you never take a shot, you are never going to fill your tag.
The ethical hunter puts in lots of range time and preparation before season. The slob/poacher goes out with alcohol and his buddies, and has little regard for the animals. They give hunting a bad name.

I’m sorry Randy, you made some rookie mistakes in this video. You would never make it in the woods of the East 😊. You don’t fumble around with your gun trying to get a signal bullet in the gun as well as your scope cover. You blew the seconds you needed to harvest. Keep up the excellent work on those elk video’s! I can only hope to come elk hunt with you some day.

Hey, the animal does not go down unless you shoot. You obviously felt like it was a shot you could make and it just did not work out. Keep up the spirits and don't beat yourself up! Just eat a bigger donut tomorrow!

the ideal situation to me is to get your animal on the last hour of the last day. missing occasionally keeps you honest and humble. either way you get to be out there alot of time.

Just opened YT in hopes of a pt3 this morning. Guess I'm a little early or maybe it means you were too busy butchering and celebrating last night and didn't have time to edit and upload. I hope that's the case.
I'll just watch this one again in the meantime.

Don't be so hard on yourself Randy, it happens! Could have been worse, you could have wounded it! PM me if you want the link to an article I wrote about a moose hunt that I almost screwed up badly!

I don't care what anyone says that is a tough shot. There's a reason why that old boy is in that area..

I’d say 100% a ranging issue due to the flat ground with sage You could probably get 5 different ranges every time you tried. And with mirage, I’d like to see a guy be accurate with a naked eye guess.- it ain’t gonna happen.
Don’t be too hard on yourself Randy, we loved it… even the misses.

We try in All good faith and fail, to learn , improve and excel, that’s what you advocate for, right?
Please consider starting a program for new hunters so you can pass your knowledge and wisdom in hunting.
    Build your legacy Randy.
