    My Mini SE always beats the stated range. Today I drove from northern Colorado to Denver at full freeway speeds in normal mode. Then went uphill 15 miles to Golden Gate Canyon park, then back to Denver and up I-25 and averaged 4.8 mi/kWh for the whole trip. The total range (29.8x4.8) was about 139 miles. Maybe my 16” summer tires make the difference. I’d love to see you do your route with various tires.

    • @torreyrad1
      @torreyrad1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is really a video about how bad the rolling efficiency of those Cross Climate 2 tires are or how good the OEM tires are. Maybe there is reason that MINI delivers the car with summer tires even to Canadians while their other cars come with all seasons. My numbers are much closer to yours in the summer months.

    • @michael--c
      @michael--c 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@torreyrad1 This is exactly correct. The summer tires MINI specs for the SE have the best fuel efficiency per the EU Tyre Label rating (A). All-season tires in general won't be as efficient, and the Cross Climate 2's fuel efficiency is rated at C per the EU Tyre Label. (The fuel efficiency scale is A-E.)

      My wife drove her 23 model for 185km (115 miles) in sport mode and still had 11% left. We're in Australia so no need for winter tyres, even though it's winter. On motorway at 110km/h (70mph) she drove 165km (102 miles) and still had about 15% left (around 30km)

    I like the Mini SE, you guys have shown how useful it is. I think I would rather get a Bolt since it has 100 more miles of range for not much more, and I'm ultimately a Chevy fan, I've learned to drive stick on my Nana's Mini Cooper S, fun and tossable, and I drove it quite a bit, I put more miles on it than she did for those 2 years. The ride was terrible because our roads are terrible, so I'm over the Mini.

  • @js-hl5hv
    @js-hl5hv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    There must be some reason why some people/cars get low range. I regularly (including last weekend) drive up the coast (in Oz). The round trip is about 230km (142 miles) and I make it back with battery to spare - OK, only a handful of percent. This is on 110kph (70 mph) roads. I have an original 2020 MINI - maybe there is a difference? As a test, last weekend I did the return trip in Sport mode, and would have had 4 percent left if I went both ways in sport.

    • @Fusionman187
      @Fusionman187 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There test seems to be constant driving on flat roads....no regeneration adding range. In certain roads where I see downhill or regen braking I'll see the GOM show increases of 2-3 miles per instance.

  • @aaronbritt2025
    @aaronbritt2025 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Green mode doesn't really work on the highway. It basically restricts your acceleration rate to preserve range. It's really only effective in city driving.

    • @paulo3564
      @paulo3564 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually drive my mini on the highway GREEN PLUS mode and it doesn't restrict, decreases acceleration but reaches maximum speed.

    • @AkioWasRight
      @AkioWasRight 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      EVs being the "future" is just goofy talk. In reality, you can easily buy an electrified car NOW! Not in the "future", RIGHT NOW! However, availability is trivial, because yet even with the availability of EVs and massive subsidies to lower the cost of purchasing them and with so much media hype surrounding them, EVs only make up around 3% of the market.
      Why is that? Simply, the technology doesn't meet market demands. Lithium batteries are relatively expensive, they have very limited range, it's an 1+ hours to charge at a "fast" charger and 10+ hours to completely charge at home. This vs an ICE car that has 2-3x the range, costs half much to purchase, and it can be fueled in 3 minutes of pumping at any corner station!
      So, maybe electric vehicles are the "future", like the automotive fortune tellers keep saying, but with current lithium technology, they will remain a novelty to the mainstream car buyer who will continue to buy more practical sources of propulsion.

    • @doublebackagain4311

    • @flightmedic7634

      I agree they are the future, the present, depending on where you live and your needs... Not necessarily.

    • @mattwolf7698
      @mattwolf7698 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it is but the range on this car is straight up trash, I wouldn't want it because of that. Give it 300 miles of range and I'd be sold.
      I think gas and certainty diesel engines still stick around in pickup trucks for a bit too, like ones where people actually use them as trucks like for hauling boats and RVs, some people travel all around the country with those RVs and would need a good range.

      Aerodynamics are not optimised for higher speeds, so consumption increases with speed. Best to stay around 60-65 for increased range.

    To me the obvious question is: Can we just tow it with another vehicle, and have the mini charge itself during the pull? (As opposed to sitting on the side of the road trying to charge with wires) Or does the regenerative braking turn it into a boat anchor?

  • @billsmith810
    @billsmith810 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wanted a mini ev but $$$ was more than I could justify. Out of curiosity besides better looks how would you compare the old Spark EV to the newer mini ev with new battery pack as far as zippyness, interior volume, functionality and efficiency. Yeah I bought a 2016 Spark EV that had only 11K miles and to me it fits my needs and fun factor well enough so I see the mini ev as a natural updated version of the Spark ev. Both cars are excellent for second vehicles and shorter commutes and great options for retired folks who use their vehicles for several short trips. Do you see these more or less niche EVs along with the new Mazda MX30 short range EV and other subcompact EVs have any real futures in the US.

    so on a 7.2 kw charger, that would be quite a significant amount of time to get the mini up to any level to get it properly moving.

    • @smokeymotorsport
      @smokeymotorsport 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That depends what you consider significant! To my mind if it will do around 4 miles per kWh and they're only maybe 5 or 10 miles away, it's maybe half an hour of charge at most to be able to get back to the office.

    I hate to say your test was not realistic but it seems you did mostly constant driving which is the worst case scenario for any EV. Not taking advantage of regen makes a significant range difference. In urban traffic the Mini will consistently beat 120 miles or better. My personal best with 6% remaining was 138 miles.

    Hydrogen fuel cell electric is what will replace internal combustion one day. Batteries take how much down time to recharge? Hydrogen, you gas and go.

    • @aaronbritt2025
      @aaronbritt2025 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doubtful. Hydrogen is very "sticky". It doesn't exist in the environment alone. It's always stuck to another element and must be separated to be used. It takes more energy to separate it than what it contains. Plus, no amount of education is going to remove the stigma created in people's minds by the words "hydrogen bomb".

      @@aaronbritt2025 My Grandfather used to work at Argon national laboratory. He often said "if nuclear energy came before the bomb people would think differently". The biggest setback for battery powered vehicles is the amount of time they take to charge. And after a while the battery loses it's ability to hold a charge.

      @@stephenm8100 And the biggest setback for ICE cars is the fact that as they age, they lose efficiency, performance and economy........... Like a worn ICE engine, an electric car battery pack can be repaired and refurbished, once it begins to lose it's efficiency. It does not always need to be totally replaced...... The time EV's take to charge isn't necessarily a setback if you charge while you sleep. In the UK at least, it's also the cheapest time to charge, as it costs around a quarter of the daytime rate if you have an EV tariff.....

    This is not a dig toward Max. TFL, all who work there, yall all are responsible for quality of your product. Shaky cameras, poor audio quality, and in general poor production quality I'm calling foul, and then I heard earlier today spent upwards of 40K more to be able to acquire a EV pickup Most of your viewers will never get. I thought I was familiar with your business model but leaves me recently SMH. May glance at your mission statement Where are yall heading? Come on Men I know you all can produce a better product. they're other great reviewers out there that do better, so can these TFL Channels.

    What happened to the girl that was doin the short reviews? She was significantly better than this new guy. Not trying to be rude but this guy looks uncomfortable and not prepared, she looked like she had been doing this for years and was easy on the eyes.

      She runs the TFL Social Media. It takes time to be confident in front of a camera. Lets give Max some time, I'm sure he will become more comfortable as he gets more camera exposure. This Channel has 72k Subscribers, I would be freaked out my first time too lol
