The Volvo PCV system is one of the most neglected maintenance items on the I5 cars. Failing to maintain this system can cause major oil leaks. I blew one of my cam seals one evening and lost 2-1/2 quarts of oil in just 2 miles. If you do not know when it was serviced last, replace the system today.

Hey Robert you're the best thank you for the information. I replaced my flame trap and nipple after which my 1995 850 passed the rubber glove test! Man I'm so happy about this I'm gonna order me some leather seat covers ;) This car is in great shape at 168,000 miles and I plan on keeping it, great city car, fits in parking spaces no one else but an electric car can. Some months back I followed your instructions and did the timing belt, water pump, tensioner and the pulleys, also did the drivers side seat belt, couldn't have done it without you man thanks again the videos are invaluable!!!

I'm trying to get around to doing a PCV video. One of the first things in doing my video would be to recommend a compression test prior to doing the job. It cost $150 for the parts and takes most people 4+ hours to do their first time. A compression test on an old car is in order before putting a lot of time and money into them. I do one every 50,000 miles.
I had a 2003 S60 that had a real bad PCV problem. When it gets bad, you'll even hear a whistling sound and throw a CEL. It took me 4 hours to replace the stupid oil trap since I had to take the manifold out and it was a bitch to get it out of the car because the metal fuel line goes in through the openings of the manifold. I was amazed at how much nasty goo was in there. Word of advice for you folks with Volvos is to always use synthetic instead if you're using conventional and to change your oil often.

Quick question. During the glove test the glove gets sucked in at idle but when I rev the motor it blows out. What does this mean? Your videos are awesome and super helpful! I go straight to Robert DIY when I have a question now! Thanks!
I'm not sure. There is a chance that you are experiencing piston blow by. You can do a compression test to find out.

Please let me know the results. That way I'll know for future people. So, my thoughts right now is that your PCV system is in good health, but you may have a worn motor or piston. If your car is a turbo, the numbers should be between 156 - 186 psi. If your car is NA then numbers should be between 185 - 215.
I think you should put up a paypal account so we can donate some $$$ your way for all the money we're saving.. Its cost me over $600 for a sensor once that I could have just cleaned had I seen your videos or did some searching before hand. I'd much rather give money for your honest lessons than these rip off mechanics!!

Thanks a million for posting this. I had no reason to suspect a problem, but I thought I'd check on the PCV system in my wife's V70, as it's getting close to needing a timing belt again. I bought the car 3 years ago. At the time, one of the selling points is that the PCV system had been professionally serviced sometime before purchase.
Anyhow, I was able to confirm that the PCV system is indeed healthy. One follow-up question - what's the typical service/replacement interval on these parts?
Leave them alone until they get clogged or a part breaks from someone working near them.
Will do. Hopefully, it'll stay healthy for a long time to come.
Oil changes. Synthetic is better.
Robert, I was checking out a S70 sold as junk today. Car starts, but after ten min or so, the idling engine started to crank unevenly. It goes faster then slow then fast, rhythmically. Is this a representative sign of what issue?

Hey Robert, I have replaced the pcv system few weeks ago, because there was smoke coming out from the dipstick hole. Now there is no smoke coming out of it, unless i rev the engine, when i rev it, some smoke comes out of it, is it normal? I did the glove test today,engine sucks the glove on idle, but when i rev it, it blows the glove a bit and sucks it back in, what does that mean?
Dovydas could mean you’ve gotta old vacuum hose that’s cracked

Valuable, valuable information!! I just looked at a 2004 XC90 last week. 2.5T engine. I pulled off the oil filler cap and saw some white smoke coming out of the oil filler neck. Not a lot of white smoke, but there was some and it flowing out steadily while the engine was running. The car drove fine, but the white smoke was enough to make me pass on vehicle. This video sheds some light on what may have been going on with that vehicle and some issues to look out for before purchasing a vehicle. Thanks!

I was bummed thinking my Head Gasket was blown so its been parked for over a year.

Thanks Robert your video may have saved me further hassles...My 850 T5 is going to the mechanics' for oil leaks shooting out behind the main seal AND out of the turbo, I understand now why this is happening, Ill get them to service the PCV while its there. Cheers

Thanks for all the help you have given on my 99 volvo s70. I'm afraid she may be done for this time around. I don't have the cash to fix a major oil leak. Shes leaking so much oil from what may be crank shaft. You have helped her greatly in the past and saved me so much money.

Hey Robert, Excellent videos. Thanks so much. And congrats on the 200+K on the wagon. I have a 2000 S70 and do not know if my PCV system has ever been serviced. I am the only owner and my "old fashioned" mechanic just does what he needs to do, I don't ask questions, he keeps my car running and I pay him. I appreciate your videos because it is great for those of use who don't know too much about the Volvo engine. They are great cars, but can be a bear to repair. Great accent btw.

Hi Rob I put the pcv/oil separator box back in after cleaning it out with a diesel soak and shake with ports closed then a reverse flush with a hi pressure gerni water Karcher if you call them that over there.....WORKED PERFECTLY LIKE BRAND NEW NO AIR PRESSURE sound being forced out when i shut engine off. Very good video. I have not purchased my first Volvo just yet, however, in the coming month I hope to. Your videos are educating me to a level to keep an watchful eye on people trying to offload cars with several hidden problems. Also, knowing what to look for may help to reduce the selling price. Kelly blue book is typically utilized for pricing and rarely questions these issues. Many of us DIY mechanics can perform these checks without taking the vehicle to a garage. Even if you had to bring the vehicle to a garage, it is very helpful to have an idea of symptoms so you are not taken advantage of by a garage telling you that you need a brake job when in fact your PCV system needs to be serviced. I recall meeting a lady once, who owned a Ford Escort, it was making a low pitch rumble noise from the rear of the car, the car had 40,000 miles on it. Margaret took the car to a garage, the mechanic told her the wheel bearings needed to be changed. Margaret phoned me, told me about the garage findings. I drove the hour up to Albany, pulled off the drivers side wheel and showed her the hub. No issues, none, it turned out the noise was a muffler heat shield vibrating against the frame. I repositioned it, noise gone. I have watched more than 5 of your videos thus far. Becoming better armed and educated of what to look for when I finally get that chance to go an look at Volvo’s. As for the PCV system, the box is the strongest link in the system. The only reason I pull them is because I need to make sure I clean behind the box, make sure the ports are clear. The main problem with the system is that the lines are clogged, damaged, leaking, etc., stopping the system from venting properly and creating the vacuum it is suppose to.
Hi Robert, I just came across your Site & Vids... what a great resource. I am an Aussie, I have a 97 Volvo 850 wagon, with 380+ K Km on the clock, and serviced by a (ex-) Volvo mechanic every 10k with a 5k oil change. It has never let me down, but is starting to use some oil. No signs of anything wrong, no smoke, and my mechanic says to just keep it topped up. It runs like a dream, and I will have the ABS module fixed in a couple of weeks by an auto electrician. The Fault light comes on too soon, maybe an O2 sensor. Those are my only 2 issues, but got them sorted, I hope. My niece has a 2006 V50, goes great, but the ignition key get stuck occasionally - a real pain. Anyway this is just to say keep up the good work - I have subscribed, and will enjoy looking at your Vids. Cheers

Yes, your car may also have a part installed in the intake called VVIS which is a valve in the intake manifold that closes 1/2 of it off sometimes. You should take the entire intake manifold off, not just push it to the side. The EGR valve is bolted to the bottom of the manifold, and you should take it off, scrape off any carbon buildup, then install a new paper gasket. This will also require you to pull the throttle body off so you should get a new gasket for that as well.

Rob, I have a 2000 s80 t6 and my car is smoking out the tail pipe like an old time mosquito truck. I'm going to try the glove test right now. Goes to show you learn something every day.
Probably one of the turbo's is gone.
2003 Volvo XC90 T6 AWD Smokes and has P0234 Code. Bad turbo...

Hi Robert. I have the parts on order and will be attempting this when they arrive from FCP. Never done this before, so keeping my fingers crossed. I have a 1995 Volvo 850 non-turbo with 175K.Bought it used so I don't know when this was done. I'll start in the morning and hope to finish in one day. Using the glove it was filling up the fingers, so I know I need to do this. Thanks.

@@RobertDIY I cleaned the throttle body and replaced the flame trap and air filter. Put the glove on the oil filler opening and it blew up like a balloon! Smoking out of the dipstick tube as well. Don't have the time to try to replace the oi trap and all that right now, so skating on thin ice! We had the entire PCV system replaced about 40 thousand miles ago. I just looked at the paperwork.
Going to check a nice 200k km 850 tomorrow, i hope it ain't trashed.

96 850 R , I finished the pcv job, and everything went well but still have the mystery part. I got the car a couple weeks ago, so not sure if it's something that was just hanging around from another job. looks like it's had a new radiator and starter. part doesn't seem like it's part of the manifold or pcv. it's basically a 1"x1" cylinder ( like a donut) with a metal body, copper wires inside that go to to leads on the end, and a plastic sheath that looks like if you insert it in a hole it will keep it in... I can send a pic, . anyway I finished the pcv job at 1am and had to drive it home and everything seems to work fine. hopefully the pcv job slows down the rear main seal leak or I'm going to be asking a lot more questions... timing belt is next...thanks for all the great videos!

Yes you can DIY. There are several topics on doing the job. You can do a Google Search "Volvo PCV System Replacement" and find a few good topics. It takes about 6 hours for a first timer so do make sure you have time to do the job.

You should also double check the intake tubes. If one of them are loose or not connected properly, it will not start or run properly.

Yes I am. I may do it at the junk yard or the next time I need to service one. I'm a little pressed for time right now so I don't see it happening within the next week or two.
Seen my first feedback video today. The car was coughing oil out of the oil filler neck all over the top of the motor.
Another way to suspect the system is clogged is when you see oil all over the top of the motor when you remove the spark plug cover.
I just swapped a 2000 V70R motor into my 1997 850 AWD..... I put a new-er (clean) PCV box on it... new hoses.... and it FAILS the glove test horribly! Turn the car on and it blows the glove up immediately at idle.
What could this be? I'm at a loss here :(
