Thank you for the info on the grubs. I had lots of grubs in the bottom of several containers I moved and dumped and was really worried on whether to reuse the soil ( only grew peppers in it last year) for new containers this year. I picked them out and put them into a pile, I went inside for a container to put them in, came back out and most of them were gone! I was like what??? Birds were sitting on the fence waiting on me to go back inside, lol. Great info, thanks!

Thank you for doing the container video. I had lavender & mint in containers. In 5 gal fabric pots. Nothing has come back. Soil feels wet but both have brittle branches. No growth. Planted from seed last year. In 6 B. I dumped the mint. It has thick roots wound around everything. Want to plant mint again. Anything that i should do differently?
Perfect timing! I just went thru my raised beds and containers and removed all the oak leafs and acorns. Ive got compost and granular fertilizer to top them all off. I was wondering how often container soil should be replaced.. obviously the larger the container the less frequent.. or never (Im not sure ill ever empty my 40, 50 or 100 gallon grow bags 😅) I do have lots of smaller containers. How often would you exchange say a 5 or 10 gallon pot for new soil?
I dump and amend mine every 3 years or so and reuse it. Big bags you just remove some soil and add compost. You dont have to dump them all. I have heard compost classified as "finished" after after a couple of months of tumbling (everything looks dark, and their are no distinguishable components) and "seasoned" after a couple of months more of sitting around. Am I correct that it safe to use "finished" compost as a top dressing? At what point is it safe to use to build container medium, with other things such as peat moss and potting mix?
So those terms are fine if you know what you are matching them too. As compost finishes and is seasoned at different points in gardeners mines and based on how it done. To me what is not finished fully is a top dressing and or mulch. Completed compost is done and done. SO it can be mixed into soil and planted in. Not in a home garden. If you are amending soil, the nutrition will be there. And most gardens are too small for crop rotation to manage pests and diseases. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN do you grow raspberries in containers? I have some Black cap raspberries to plant and I’m running out of room. I have some fall golden raspberries in the ground. I’ve been researching folks planting them in pots.
Hi, I refreshed some containers from last year. I also got MG potting mix and MG organic inground soil. I noticed that they have alot of wood product in them. Is that ok? Should I add other types of soil into the containers with the MG potting mix? More worm casting, black cow? Also, is that the Alaskan fish fertilizer that you're using for your plants? One more queston, the MG says it feeds for 6 months. If it feeds for 6 months is it necessary to keep adding fertilizer over time?
Most of them have wood products. Its okay. Add as you have been. No special things you have to do. When in doubt a little more water soluble wont hurt. That is why I make mine.
I have been getting grubs for decades. Birds do love them!

I fit 4 in there. They do well in the 1/2 whiskey barrel. Could have had 5 perhaps.

Thanks for the useful information. Perfect timing!!
I have a question. Can you suggest a good container to use for mixing soil, compost, etc. prior to planting. I am picturing a good sized dish wash basin. Do you have any other suggestions, and where to source? Many thanks.
How about a wheelbarrow? If you’re outside, of course!😉
I actually use a wheelbarrow. Or I dump it on a tarp and mix.

Hi Gary my rosemary is in a large container it’s about 9yrs old , this year it’s roots got frozen then water logged, it’s seems ok( just) any advice would be appreciated thanks
No. I hope it's okay. The sooner it warms the better. Once it's growing some nitrogen is always good. But not much you can do.

Excellent video! Do people still use compost tea, or is that no longer a thing?
It works. I just found it was extra work. Once I start have ample compost, I have to do much less feeding wise. If you give them a water soluble fertilizer, you really did all you need to do. The tea is just extra.

Is there a difference between chicken manure and cow manure? is one better for certain plants?
There is a difference. A manure fully composted and decayed is fine. For no reason but If I had to pick one, I would go with chicken manure.

I have a question I have two small matter patches I have seen videos were you need to rotate the plants every year what would you say
Not in a home garden. If you are amending soil, the nutrition will be there. And most gardens are too small for crop rotation to manage pests and diseases. The insect just walk over and the disease finds its way over to the crops.

Gary do you leave any plastic pots with soil over the winter or do they get too beat up? I emptied dozens of 5 gallon buckets I used as containers last season and it’s exhausting to refill them every year. I left my fabric pots to over winter. They did fine.
All my pots and fabric pots stay outdoors and are filled. I havent had issues here in Maryland.

You can by the basic ingredients and make the same stuff for a lot less

When you mint or spearmint, do you throw the trimmings into the compost pile? Or just onto the ground?
I throw it not compost usually. Sitting up top it dries out. Roots and root balls, I let sit on the ground till dried out

My containers need to be replaced. So I'll weed them, the dump them out on a tarp, amend, then fill new containers. That's the plan, anyway!
That is the way to do it.
Good old fish emulsion or hydrolysate can't beat that stuff. Add in some aerated worm tea and watch the magic happen.
Thanks.
