This video is the one that got me hooked on MIgardener. I went out and bought crowns and planted them in a big pot. Coming back every year just like you said. Thank you!
Finally someone who gardens like I do. In nature seeds fall where they will and the plants still flourish. I don't need asparagus the size of drumsticks so I tend to plant a bit closer than I'm told to do.
Rewarding yes. Money saving... errrr... If I worked for every hour I gardened, I would easily make more money at work and could buy the fruits/veggies for cheaper. No we can't beat the big companies. BUT this is relaxing, rewarding and fun.
I planted bare roots from (ugh) Walmart, and in having pretty good results. I put them in a large rope handled tub (20 gal?) and drilled a ton of holes in it with a screw gun and a ½" drill bit. They're not as tall as some videos I've seen, but the new shoots are bigger with each new one. Thanks for the encouragement Luke. God bless.
I just ordered a bunch of asparagus seeds. My plan is to spread them throughout the yard this fall. Wit luck some will winter then pop up in the spring. I don't plan on doing anything with them and let nature run its course. If they survive I will let them fern for the first few seasons. It will be a fun experiment. I as well have some in my raised garden. about 3 year old. Hope to finally harvest some next season. Good video. Maybe I will toss some seeds in a container as well.
Thanks for this! My mom gave me some asparagus crowns and I didn't have space in my garden for them. I have 2 huge pots I can use instead. Thanks for the info, you always have the best advice!
Thank you for this helpful video! I just bought asparagus roots and want to try growing them in containers because our soil isn't too great. It would be be handy to have a bullet point summary at the end, though. Thanks again!
I planted my asparagus 2 years ago in a raised garden containers, I only have 4 plants but they are doing great, I decided to plant 6 more crowns last week just waiting for them to start coming up and then I’m planting some other plants around those.
Thanks for the video! Just planted asparagus plants from seeds from MIGardener:). Had almost 100 germination. Planted them in ground. Hoping they do great as everyone is telling me I have to plant with crowns.
Thank you so much for this video! I thought asparagus could only be grown in ground because of the roots. I have a small garden and really wanted to grow asparagus but didn’t think I had enough space. I’m going to put some of my bare root plants in ground and some in containers 💚🌱
Our asparagus has been very resilient. Put in the ground 20 or more years ago, grass was choking it out so dug up and put in two large containers. Never fertilized, no compost, little water but 20 years later still alive. This year put pans under pots and started fertilizing and watering and they are looking the best I've ever seen. Want to start some Connover's Collosal seeds I bought and wondering if I can plant seeds in pots and bypass growing in seed starting trays in August or September. Good job with your posts. Lots of good info. In general I've been a bad gardener not having good success with anything except peppers.
Hoping to finally finally buy a home next year or the year after and I want an asparagus bed when I get there! Thanks for this info so I can get started this year and have a head start when I eventually find my property!
Thanks for the vid this is my first year growing asparagus. I bought crowns and I used the smallest one and planted it in a container it is doing well.
Don't let the people who fail in patience bother you, Luke. Most love your personality, that is why we keep coming back. That, and the fact that you know what you are doing and we learn a lot. So if I live where it gets -40° potting asparagus is out?
2021 here. I planted asparagus seeds 2 years ago. They never grew go I dumped the soil into my "new" soil prepared for a flower. I now have a beautiful asparagus that I'm transplanting this year into its permanent home.
I found placing large pots on a soil surface (vs tiles, flooring, cement etc.) is more conducive to water retention and temperature control. If the plant wants to explore beyond the drainage holes - one cannot keep Nature captive. So glad someone refers to ground as soil and not "dirt!"
I use very large containers for my plants and have them I wheels. I can move them indoors in deep winter.I have a lot of my pots on the deck with water trays. But now with the concern for Zika, I put planter mosquito skirts on them. What I am really interested in is white asparagus. I grew to love it while I lived in Europe.
Great overview! I just got some seedlings at the Farners Market, and BiMart carries wooden tubs the right size - was just thinking of getting another one! My old notes suggest adding some kelp, and calendula and nasturtiums make good companion plants (especially those first years!)
Thank you for this video it was very helpful and I have planted mine just fine. I was worried and after viewing this video I feel much better that my asparagus have a good chance.
Thank you so much for this excellent video! I just got home from my weekly farmers market, with some saplings about that size, and although you covered everything for northern growing, I live in Central America up at altitude, where it rains a lot, so I think pot growing would be better to be able to take them in, or cover them when there's too much rain.
Luke I am so glad I found your video on how to grow asparagus In a pot because about two years ago I tried growing asparagus In the biggest pot I could find I gave It some fertilizer and watered It really good and put mulch around It well anyway I was not for sure how to over winter It so I put It In my garage because I thought It would become damaged In the cold weather If I left It outside and when spring arrived I took It out of my garage and put It back outside In the sun shine and It wilted and become very slimy like so I gave up and have not grown It since
Excellent info was just cutting some asparagus n thought I'd like to grow this then found your video thk u soooo much how do u add newspaper or mulch without harming the plant n can u recommend the best soil n fertilizer to buy thk u hope i get a reply as new to growing 😁😁
So happy to have found this video. I bought full asparagus crowns on a whim only to realize I don't have space for them in my raised bed. I have some full sized asparagus crowns to plant, can I use a pot of the same size or do I need to go bigger?
couple questions.... I assume that like in regular planting of asparagus, you need to wait a couple seasons before you begin to harvest the asparagus? Also, come winter, do you cut them back? Thanks!
Which pot would you recommend, I have 4 to choose from. A. 21" tall X 21" across the top and 12" across at the bottom? B. 20 or 25 gal grow bag? C. 15" tall X 22" across the top and 18" across the bottom. Thinking 1 purple passion crown per pot. Thank you in advance. 1st year trying asparagus. Zone 6B Love the Videos!
The red/pink flowered tree behind you is so beautiful. Is that a Sakura Tree or Cherry blossom? thanks for uploading this video, definitely I'll try it because I love eating asparagus.
Hi! My friend gave me a pot with few asparagus shoot in April. I didn’t cut the asparagus and now they have about 4 feet of ferns. Should I cut the ferns off? Thx!
I pitched my asparagus seeds from my plants in the same bed (didn't think they would grow) but they have. How would you go about getting the starts out with out hurting the existing asparagus or hurt the new start plant?
Thank you for information. I planted asparagus in a small pot that has not yield anything. I have had it for about 6 years. It comes back as fern. Anyway thanks again. Now I know.
I know you seeing this is a long shot but I'm gonna try anyway. I'm trying to start asparagus seeds to put in a raised bed that won't be built till fall. If I start asparagus from seed in a container, would it be feasible to transplant year-old crowns into a raised bed later on, or would the shock be too much for them? After a year in a container I don't know if the roots would be too happy about being transplanted.
Hi Luke, great video big👍 I've planted cherry trees in big red pot 60cm's are they okay? Also I used westlands multi-purpose compost in the pots, is that fine or do I used a potting mix instead? What soil would I have to use for all other fruit trees, and what size pots? Please do a series on growing fruit in containers. Is it good to grow beetroot in pots?!
I started asparagus seeds indoors this year with the plan of having a nice bed ready for them...however due to unforeseen events I'm not going to be able to get the bed ready this year!😔 Can I go ahead and put them in large containers and then transplant them into the ground next year? Or maybe in the fall?
Hi really have been enjoying your videos..wondering if when weather gets better this 2017 year could you do an update of this Asparagus video. Also do you bring the pots in at all? chicago winters can be killer.
I’m researching for growing my first garden and want to know what type of fertilizer your talking about at the 10 minute mark? Is it liquid or bag of it?? Any recommendations on brands too??
I'm trying to figure out if the pots I have are big enough. I got some from Dollar Tree that are 13 1/2 inches wide at the top (and somewhat narrower at the bottom) X 11 1/4" deep. I love Asparagus and would love to be able to grow it at home.
I planted my asparagus crown in a milk crate but I noticed the asparagus is coming out sideways 😬🤦🏻♀️ did I plant it wrong thanks for the info very helpful 👍👍👩🌾😊 is it too late for me to fertilize mine 🤦🏻♀️

Yeah asparagus roots can go 10 to 15 feet into the ground. It's why they pull up nutrients that no other vegetables can reach. All the minerals is what makes the urine smell strong. 😂
It sounds to me like asparagus and raspberries/strawberries grow in the same type of soil mix. Am I understanding that correctly?
