    Rode a skatepark in Sanger, CA for the first time in 40 years last month. Humbling! RL making it look easy for age 50+ riders!

    I don't know Dylan's riding background, but riding ramps is an advanced activity. If i was teaching a new rider, I would teach them how to "jump" using a 12-inch high dirt ramp landing to flat. When the rider can get 3 to 4 feet of air off that small jump, they would have learned both control and technique. An advanced rider can get 5+ feet of air off a little 12-inch jump. After learning the mechanics of "jumping" on the small dirt ramp, and able to throw in "style" like a cross-up or a tabletop, then move onto the vert ramps. That's my advice anyway!

      Yes, although he's coming along he still lacks bike control. Although I wouldn't advise against skateparks I would advise some $25 elbow pads.

      We always appreciate advice on this channel as we are both students of the sport so thank you for that! I will pass it along to Dylan and try and get him to slowly work up to it like that. Unfortunately he can be pretty stubborn and once he sets his mind to something he has to do it! Let's see if he will listen lol

    Great to see Dylan learning and pushing himself 👍 And RL snuck in some airtime on the vert wall, too

    Dylan should try coming from the opposite side.
    RL rides left foot forward so he naturally rotates to the right on airs.
    Dylan is the opposite so he may have a better shot of landing on the transition sloping downward from the opposite side (Just a thought).
    Keep up the vids gentlemen, stay Rad.

      Hey thank you for the bit of advice Craig I will definitely pass that along to Dylan and I actually was telling him it might be easier from the other side. I think he is convinced other wise or just to stubborn to listen to his old man lol

    Dylan invest in some protective equipment especially when riding cement....Gloves,elbows,knees and shin guards..keeps you from injury plus raising your confidence level up... Live to ride another day!!

    I learned spine jump stuff by foot planting over first. One foot down at a slower speed helped me figure the mechanics of it all out.

    • @RLOsbornBMXFreestyle
      @RLOsbornBMXFreestyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a good idea and that is actually how I do it when getting used to a new spine or transition. Dylan will definitely be trying this out.

    do you guys think the 22" bike is less suited than a 20" for the smaller transitions in that skatepark? just curious have you each rode both sizes? good video cool to see him push through his comfort zone I'm sure he either has it down by now or will soon. many people post vids after they've got something down, its important for people to share the process that gets to that point too.

    • @RLOsbornBMXFreestyle
      @RLOsbornBMXFreestyle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Derek he is definitely pushing himself and I would say the 22 works great for the park, you just have to get used to moving that little extra bit of bike around but I would say the 20 makes it a little easier on those quick transitions. Just easier to manipulate the bike.
      And yes we love showing the process no matter how slow or painful haha thanks for watching

    Dylan, give some thought to the sizing on that bike. You need to pull the bars in, you're too stretched out, limiting your torso's ability to move the bike into place. Place the bars where you have control and balance, not where the sweeps feel good. BMX bars need updates to the archaic sweeps measurements. And bars are way too tall for a 22 inch bike...at least if you want to jump it with control.

    • @Younghead
      @Younghead 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sound’s interesting.
      What update’s to B.M.X. bars would you personally like to see… ?

    • @supernoobsmith5718
      @supernoobsmith5718 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Younghead Sweeps are measured in relation to the bars standing upright, perpendicular to the ground. This was the standard because that is the angle people used them.
      Then BMX frames became longer, and the bars never got updated to account for the fact that people now pulled the bars in 10-15 degrees. This completely changes the nature of the sweeps.
      This caused people to then choke up more and more on the bars where main bend is, searching for a more natural feel. This was then translated into ever widening bars, even though everyone clownishly has at least 4 inches of grip they don't use. They were searching for wideness at the main bend.
      Everyone thinks this is normal somehow. Mountain bike bars get it, although it's a more subltle thing because the rise is so low. But get some DJ or MTB freestyle bars and you can immediately see that they get it.
      The proper way to create a bar would be to make the same sweeps and bends that people like, but start off with the bar in the vice at 10-15 degrees tilted. I tried to talk to several companies about this, but they just weren't getting it.

    • @Younghead
      @Younghead 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@supernoobsmith5718 So having just pointed this out , would you have the bars that Dylan & RL are using wider or narrower, or tilted more forward or back.. ?
      Or would you have the sweeps in less...?

    • @supernoobsmith5718
      @supernoobsmith5718 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Younghead RL instinctively knows what he's doing. He's a tall guy on a short frame, and he's got a short stem bringing the bars in without changing the angle too much. I do that too. I use a 36mm flatland stem and push the bars forward a bit (forward in relation to parallel with the headtube). Dylan pushed the bars way forward because he's new and searching for comfort in the wrist, but doing so he's too stretched out. Like he's setup for cruising and comfort. It's natural for him to do so especially given the problem with bar design.

    • @supernoobsmith5718
      @supernoobsmith5718 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Younghead The width is a different story. It just depends on how the rider feels about it. Wide grip gives you a different set of chest muscles to use when landing hard onto flat. Choked up grip gives you better ability to get the arms involved in pumping transitions, but also forces you to use more arms strength and less chest strength when landing hard. Which is why so many people punch themselves in the face on a hard landing. How wide you like your grip will affect how you size other things. For me, I like a medium narrow grip to get good pump and extension to move the bike around in bowls.
