Considering you are showing people how to accomplish a few things here and there, I am surprised by some of the negative comments. It was a very good tutorial.
Mr. Kerr, I just wanted to let you know, You're a LEGEND at Gimp! I have not seen work like this... Any and Every thing you do is Beautiful! I am VERY Impressed! Keep up the good work! =)
That's fine - no one is forcing anyone to do anything. This tutorial is to show what is possible. All the effects can be toned down as the image is edited non-destructively - you can reduce the effects by reducing the layer opacity of each effect in turn to modify it.
whoa. That's Nice! my hats off to you Billy. I didn't even know this was possible in GIMP, and I've been using it for 3 yrs. Incredible, I'm keeping an eye on you.
On the Newest GIMP 2.8.4 the shortcut is now CTRL+Shift+J to fit the image in the window. This tutorial was made almost two years ago, on an older version of GIMP.
I know this video is old, but as it might confuse others new to Gimp, the shortcut used at 6:05 in this video to view the whole image is listed and annotated as CTRL+SHIFT+E, it should actually be CTRL+Shift+J. Thanks for the great video and tips!
Question now is should I delete all the plug-in files from the patterns folder? And is all the folders, like brushes, curves, fonts, palettes, templates..etc.....supposed to be empty, if not were do I get them from? I love all the things you can do with the g'mic plugin. Thanks so much for the tutorial and all the help!! Very much appreciated!!
Hi Brian. You can't have a selection inside a selection, you either have items selected or deselected. To deselect parts inside a selection press CTRL while you click to start your selection. To add parts to a selection press Shift before you start your selection. Hope that helps, if you need more info please send me a PM.
Having had a quick look againm it seems you might be selecting the face mask layer (the skin texture) and applying grain extract - however the video instructions say to select "overlay" not "grain extract"
I would agree with you, but the original is not always the best if your client requires you to edit it. The customer always gets the last say - since they pay the money.
Loved it!!! I'm new to all photo editing software, so forgive my stupid questions. :) Is this gimp 2.6 or 2.8 and can it be done the same way with either version. I have 2.8 and when you say I need to get pluggin, does it need to be installed or placed in a folder in gimp...thanks for all your help! Wish I could print this tutorial, is there a place I can do that?
I just used this tutorial on a few pictures, and they turned out really well. Thanks for posting! Is there any way to save more of the freckles from getting blurred out? Would I increase the amount of gaussian blur from 15 before doing the grain extract?
You don't have to do the eyes if you don't want to - and because the eye edit is on a separate layer you can reduce the effect if it's too strong by reducing the opacity - or just switch off the layer altogether if you don't like it.
Yes!! It is working now but when I went to paste the files into the C:\users\myname\gimp-2.8\plug-ins folder, there wasn't a plug-in folder so I made a new folder named plug-ins and then copied the files into it. Then I started looking at all the folders in the gimp-2.8every(21) folder was empty except the theme folder because I had downloaded themes for it and the folder patterns which had the plug-in folder, in it was gmic-1.5.4.0 with all the same files as was in the zip folder. continued...
Great tutorial, thanks. Just a slight issue I've been having, when using the lasso, I've found that even when holding control when making the first points for each new object, brow, eye, etc, once I finish the second eye, for example, all my other lassoed points deselect. Any idea what could be causing this? any suggestions would be much appreciated.
did you download the correct version of G'MIC for your computer system? You need to choose the 32 bit or 64 bit version depending on which version of Windows you run. If you choose the wrong one, it won't work.
Hi Aubrey. I think you are missing out a step. Which one I can't tell, but have you switched on your youtube annotations - full instructions appear in the annotations.
You need to hold down control to make a deselection as you click the first point. After you have made the first point, you no longer need to hold control. If you forget to hold control to select the first point, all the other points you made will be deselected and you will need to start again. If you are having trouble with this method you could also use the quick mask method to make a selection instead. To learn how to use it google "GIMP quick mask tutorial".
You need to install it, and make sure the install path is set to your GIMP plugins folder: C:\Users\[YourUserName]\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins - obviously inserting your actual user name - then restart GIMP to get it to show up.
Great tutorial, thanks a lot! Just one thing I need your help with: when I try to adjust the colour curves, it doesn't change anything. Any idea what it could be due to? (It doesn't show the bars on the graph like it does in your video.)
Like I said I'm new,,,,I downloaded g'mic to download folers, clicked on gmic_gimp_win6(with a 4 under it), then gmic-1.5.40, then gmic_gimp-2.8_plugin, then _gmic, then curl and I get this messag...Program can't start because libgcc_s_sjlj1.dll is missing.....Help please!!
Hello, great tutorial, thank you very much! One quick question: When I go to do the grain extract, all of the layers go to grey except for the "mask" layer (the one with the eyes and eyebrows and stuff cut out). When I select said "mask" layer and do the grain extract, it looks more blue. The final image either looks sunburnt or just not quite right. What am I doing incorrectly?
It means you probably have the wrong layer selected, or you may have a selection made. Clear the selection using Select > None, and make sure you have the eye layer selected before you click Colors > Curves. Hope you get it to work.
hi,great tuts, could you please show me in detail since i am new to gimp what the process is for thinning eyebrows,i`ve tried multiple ways all to no ayail, cloning, healing, distorting, they work to an extent but then when i try to apply make-up the distortions show through the overlay, thanks, joanna,i am using gimp 2.8
I wouldn't attempt thinning eyebrows in image editing software. Use a pair of tweezers, to pluck the eyebrows instead - before you take the photograph.
Hey thanks a lot for this post. I have really learnt a lot but the problem is that with the gimp 2.8. after the editing of the photo, I couldn't make use of it, because it can only save as XCF and it wouldn't open with any other file and not compatible with any other file. Please is there anything I can do about it?
In GIMP 2.8 you need to click File > Export to save images in different file formats. In older versions of GIMP 2.6 and earlier, File > Save As was used for this purpose. In the newest GIMP, File > Save As is now reserved for saving in GIMP's own file formats. This new behaviour is described in the GIMP 2.8 user manual here: docs.gimp.org/2.8/en/gimp-images-out.html#save-export-image
Thanks for a great vid ! I'm using GIMP 2.8.6 and have searched online as to why, with the lasso tool, when I press the ctrl key and click to start a "deselected" area ie: around the nose/eyebrows, an options bar/menu appears instead of a new de-selection area.. could it be a glitch of using a Mac ?? I haven't figured out a way to do the de-selection area to exclude the eyebrows etc...
GIMP 2.8.6 is a little out of date now. Perhaps you should try 2.8.10 - the most recent version. If there were any glitches they may have been ironed out in the newest version. Since GIMP is free, it's a good idea to keep it updated. I usually suggest Mac users go get the software from the GIMP on OSX site here: gimp.lisanet.de/Website/News/News.html
Oh, and one more thing. Not sure if this will fix it for you, but usually using the CTRL key is generally a Windows and Linux thing, I think the usual Mac equivalent is the Command key. Perhaps if you try it. Let me know how you get on. It'll be useful for other Mac users if that works.
Billy Kerr Hi , thanks for the reply ! I upgraded as recommended to 2.8.10 and the same problem occurs. I tried cmd, ctrl, alt, fn, shift and combinations of the above.. I must be doing some really basic mistake that I dont even know about ! I tried searching online to see if anyone else has this problem but couldnt find anything either... Pretty basic roadblock !
Billy Kerr So here is some extra info: when i would try it with the cmd tool, my initial selection would be there and the new selection's marching ants would disappear. I decided to check if that portion was nevertheless 'de-selected' by pasting it into a new layer.. it worked! Now I tried the whole thing again, and the CMD key works fine, I see my marching ants from the de-selection too.. so weird !! I guess copy-pasting it into layer kicked it into gear ? :S
To get the layers dock back in GIMP click Windows > Recently closed docks > Layers, channels, paths . . . or if it's not listed then reset GIMP by clicking Edit > Preferences > Window Management > Reset Saved Window Positions to Default Values.
I tried scrolling through the comments to see if this had already been asked but didn't see it. For the final touches where you lighten up the shadows, what kind of brush are you using? When I use a 050 brush it always seems to leave unnatural streaks no matter how low I set the opacity. Thanks so much!
Make sure you set the brush mode to "lighten only", and then turn the opacity way down low. Then CTRL+click to sample a light skin tone area. The 050 brush should do just fine.
When installing G'MIC using the zip file, you need open the zip file then go into the gmic-1.5.4.0 folder, then go into the gmic_gimp-2.8_plugin folder - now select everything inside there, that is all the files and the folder that you can see (CTRL+A selects all), copy them (CTRL+C) and paste them (using CTRL+V) into you C:\Users\Your UserName\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins folder, then quit and restart GIMP
Thank you for this video, it was super helpful, after searching for a video that was easy to follow and didn't waste time talking for the first 3 minutes. Keep it up. :)
You shouldn't have plugins in the patterns folder - the patterns folder is for .pat files only. The other folders are for any extra brushes, curves, fonts, palettes, patterns, that you want to add yourself. Yes they should be empty unless you put new stuff in them. You shouldn't have had to create a "plug-ins" folder, the GIMP installer from the official website creates a plugins folder for you. Make sure you got your GIMP from the official site at gimp (dot) org
Sorry, meant to say the plugin you need is called G'MIC, not the layer effects - the link to get it is in the description under my video. G'MIC comes with an installer - so all you need to do is install it, and restart GIMP.
LOL, it's not so many steps. Believe me I had to keep this one short - youtube only allowed 10 minutes when I made this tutorial. I didn't invent this technique, I learnt these techniques from others, mostly from Photoshop tutorials, but I converted the techniques I learnt for use in GIMP
Miles above other Gimp tutorials I have seen. THANK you for sharing!!
Billy, your technique is impeccable as well as your tutoring style. One of the top 2 or 3 out of hundreds of tutorials I've seen on the net.
Yes, all of these techniques can be used for lots of different things. glad you found it useful.
Considering you are showing people how to accomplish a few things here and there, I am surprised by some of the negative comments. It was a very good tutorial.
Mr. Kerr,
I just wanted to let you know,
You're a LEGEND at Gimp!
I have not seen work like this...
Any and Every thing you do is Beautiful!
I am VERY Impressed! Keep up the good work! =)
FABULOUS!! Not sure I will ever need to do this much with a photo, but I LOVE watching you do it! WOW!!!!!!
That's fine - no one is forcing anyone to do anything. This tutorial is to show what is possible. All the effects can be toned down as the image is edited non-destructively - you can reduce the effects by reducing the layer opacity of each effect in turn to modify it.

WOW impressive, will have to view it several times to get a handle on the steps. Thanks for making the tutorial.

very good one, very rare people share their skill like this, keep it up.
I learned so much just from this one video. Hope to learn much more from you and your videos.
Clear, precise with well paced titles. Thanks
Thanks for sharing, A very clear demonstration. Adding the catch light in the eye was excellent.
I learned a lot from your example.
Nice work and very good tutorial. Thanks. But I didn't understand why you changed her eyes?
OUTSTANDING JOB!! One of my all time favorite tutorials!!
That's probably going to be my favorite Gimp tutorial
One of the best tutos i have ever seen of face retouching thanks
Thank you for the compliment. Glad you liked it.
Yes Billy I'm looking for easy to use editing - one click - color correction, one click - brightness adjustment on slides. Thanks for the ideas.
Wow! what an amazing transformation. The best I have seen for Gimp.
Glad you liked it. Thanks for the comment.
If you mean what to do if there is hair over the face, then you need to go around the hair when selecting the skin.
Yes!! It is working now but when I went to paste the files into the C:\users\myname\gimp-2.8\plug-ins folder, there wasn't a plug-in folder so I made a new folder named plug-ins and then copied the files into it. You're too kind. Anyway, glad you're enjoying my little tutorials.
Thanks for the positive feedback.
Just a quick note that I believe the g'mic enhancement filter is now under the repair option !
Yes it is, GMIC has been updated several times since I made this tutorial, they have reorganised the filters.
Great tutorial, thanks. Just a slight issue I've been having, when using the lasso, I've found that even when holding control when making the first points for each new object, brow, eye, etc, once I finish the second eye, for example, all my other lassoed points deselect. Hi Aubrey. I think you are missing out a step. Which one I can't tell, but have you switched on your youtube annotations - full instructions appear in the annotations.
This is brilliant,,,,you make it look effortless!
This tutorial was done a while ago on GIMP 2.6.11 - the newest version of GIMP is now 2.8
You need to hold down control to make a deselection as you click the first point.
Thanks a lot, it did work (I had the wrong layer selected, as you said). And thanks again for the tutorial, you saved me a lot of money :) x
umm I know this isn't in this vid but do you know how to put new lips on if the pics lips are messed up and should I put the new lips on before blur?
You need to install it, and make sure the install path is set to your GIMP plugins folder: C:\Users\[YourUserName]\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins - obviously inserting your actual user name - then restart GIMP to get it to show up.
Great tutorial, thanks a lot! Just one thing I need your help with: when I try to adjust the colour curves, it doesn't change anything. Any idea what it could be due to? (It doesn't show the bars on the graph like it does in your video.)
Amazing work on this video. It has really helped me a lot, thanks!!
A marvelous tutorial. Thanks so much.
Brilliant tutorial! THANK YOU!
So easy when someone shows you how. You Sir are a Legend!
That was awesome! There's so much to learn in this program. Thanks for posting.
Hello, great tutorial, thank you very much! When I select said "mask" layer and do the grain extract, it looks more blue. The final image either looks sunburnt or just not quite right. What am I doing incorrectly?
Great tutorial,,, is there a name for this technique? or is it a combination of techniques? thanks
It means you probably have the wrong layer selected, or you may have a selection made. Clear the selection using Select > None, and make sure you have the eye layer selected before you click Colors > Curves. Hope you get it to work.
I downloaded the 64bit...I use windows 7, What is the name of the file that is in the zip file, do I click on to install?
I can't get the G'MIC plugin to show up in Gimp 2.8
I wanted to know which software you are using.
hi,great tuts, could you please show me in detail since i am new to gimp what the process is for thinning eyebrows,i`ve tried multiple ways all to no ayail, cloning, healing, distorting, they work to an extent but then when i try to apply make-up the distortions show through the overlay, thanks, joanna,i am using gimp 2.8

I don't have the Filter G>MIC my list ends at Script_Fu any Ideas how I can get the G>MIC?
Yes it is fiddly, but photo retouching is a fiddly thing to do well. GIMP is a powerful application, and with that comes complexity.
Nice work,very good tutorial thanks
So good! So genuinely clever. So helpful. Forget the rest.
FANTASTIC tutorial! Thank you!
Hey thanks a lot for this post. Thanks Billy
Yes, I frequently use it in my job.
O_O So many Steps. How Long did it take to figure that out?
Like both the tutorial & the music. THANKS!
wow amazing, using gimp like a pro (y) well done sir..
Do you use GIMP professionally?
Thanks for a great vid ! I'm using GIMP 2.8.6 and have searched online as to why, with the lasso tool, when I press the ctrl key and click to start a "deselected" area ie: around the nose/eyebrows, an options bar/menu appears instead of a new de-selection area.. could it be a glitch of using a Mac ?? Sabsijoon Yay!!! you got it to work!! Well done!!
for some reason I don't have the toolbar on the right, so unable to click the new layer icon. Please excuse my ignorance with this, I'm a first timer.
To get the layers dock back in GIMP click Windows > Recently closed docks > Layers, channels, paths . . . or if it's not listed then reset GIMP by clicking Edit > Preferences > Window Management > Reset Saved Window Positions to Default Values.
Yes I did, I downloaded 64bit and I have windows 7,. Are the steps correct that I did, see last comment...the first folder was called gmic_gimp_win64.
Nice Video!!! Very enjoyable to listen to the music while I learned!! : )
Which version of GIMP are you using?
Glad you liked it.
What gimp are you using?

very good, but the Ctrl + Shift + E didn´t work..
Brilliant tutorial. Thanks for creating and sharing.
What is the file name of the installer?
awesome work !
Thank you...great work
where i can found that kind of images :/
find images for practising with on the internet - google images, bing images, yahoo images. Or take your own photographs!!!

You don't need to change her eyes if you don't want to. I was simply showing what is possible in GIMP - since this video is a tutorial.
Thank you very much
Great tutorial. Instant sub.
Wow! thanks for this! I can't wait to download this one. :D
