I wanted to try the viral vegan McDonalds that everyone keeps talking about... Mr. Charlie’s, but its currently its about 2000 miles away from me so I had to figure out another way.
While I was thinking about this journey the one thing that stuck with my was the McDonalds fries and how I could make them vegan. (they are not vegan... come on mcdonalds... its fries, no need to add the animal products) Luckily someone already did, @JKenjiLopezAlt made a McDonalds french fry recipe that didn't use any animal products. www.seriouseat...
So I did my best to whip together everything I could find to make my Viral McDonalds dream come true and here is that story!

I feel privileged that I can still have my favorite foods (burgers) on a vegan lifestyle. Can't imagine my life without it.
It's a great time to be vegetarian/vegan.
Getting the vegan ingredients from an actual mcD's was such a genius idea!
you said to coat the fries in kosher salt, but if you want a more authentic McDonald's experience, use pickling salt. that's what they use. It actually matters
Thanks for the tip !!
McDs puts a butter type spread on the buns before “grilling”
To say that is McDonald’s would be disrespectful. The food you just made looks infinitely better!
No Impossible Burger or Beyond Chicken available here on Brazil.
:-(
Meanwhile Greta Thunberg can just pull up her Nissan leaf at the Swedish McDonald’s drive thru and simply order a McVegan like it’s 2011 when I hadn’t made it to Seattle Washington just yet. McDonald’s is so stupid for a few reasons. Not keeping McVegans is one of those. Imagine they had vegan hot cakes, McVegans, and a vegan suitable fries order they would literally have the entire market hooked. The fact that no vegan nuggets manufacturer has yet to actually batter fry their nuggets like McDonald’s does with their chicken intestine and bone meal nuggets is astounding to me.
i went to Mr Charlie’s in SF, its located right across the street from a McDonald’s 😂 it was really awesome though! this was a really fun video to watch.
All vegans who fault find mainstream companies making vegan options good on you for hurting the vegan movement!! BRILLIANT
Went to the Venice location a few months ago and yes they took their time but it taste it like Mickey Ds, worth it
I'm shocked their buns are vegan when their fries aren't. The crisp on those fries sounded delicious!
Mc Donalds fries are vegan in the UK with only 3 ingredients. Not sure why the US needs all those extra ingredients.
Also if wanting to save on “beyond”, try getting at Sam’s, basically half the price.
I remember McDonald's arriving in the UK in my early 20s when I was still a meat eater. A few people raved about it. Went to the McDonald's on The Strand. Didn't like it. Puffy empty soggy chips, soggy floppy burgers with limp lettuce and milk shakes which were artificial tasting runny ice cream. Whats not to like?In those days the ony real competition they had was Mr Wimpy, which wasn't a high bar to do better, but a big fail, imo.
Your inventive talents have been put to better use😊
First
Yes!!!!
Homegirl takes the smallest bites as if the food is nasty and she’s not trying to eat it but also doesn’t wanna be rude but since this is a consistent thing, I just think that’s how she bites food. I have no reason to be this bothered by that but I can’t control it like how she probably can’t control them tiny ass bites
It’s just how she eats.
Here we are trying so hard to make/get vegan meat replacements so no animals would die to satisfy our selfish needs. BUT at the same time, some of us are promoting the company owned by those who are responsible for the massacre of several human beings in the world as we speak? This is sickening
By doing it at home, Sauce Stache is doing the opposite of what you claim. Also, he's promoting, by mentioning it several times, the food store that mimics McDonald's in a vegan way, and lamenting that it's located only in California. Perhaps you missed all of that.
If I try to replicate any product of a company, it means I like that product and if I'm an influencer posting the video for all to see, then I am "promoting" that company. I hope that's clear.
@@VarayaT Your premise is not valid: There is no evidence that this creator, or other fast food veganizers, approve of the companies whose products they liked before they were vegan. To suggest that they are passively promoting these companies by veganizing their products is an invalid inference to draw.
They are veganizing these products specifically to give consumers the option to not support those companies, and often, as in this video, also _mentioning alternative companies that make similiar products for people to patronize instead._
If you're a vegan--not sure you are--are you one of those people who object to analogue products on the basis of their "promoting" ham or mozarella cheese because they use those those terms on their labeling? This attitude in no way helps promote veganism to the mainstream. You and I may abhor McDonald's but most people don't, and they're the people vegans have to appeal to.
In Canada we have Odd Burger for plant based fast food and they have menu items that mimic's McDonalds and Burger King. They are in the midst of a big US expansion!
McD's had a veggie burger here a couple o decades ago; it was a steamed Yves veggie pattie and didn't taste so great so sales were weak and thus they dropped it, pizza too at one point.
The secrete for McDonalds fries is to reuse the same oil 2000 times.
😂
That’s actually not true though I wish I could agree and move on. I worked at 3 different McDonald’s in my lifetime (in the US) and they had us changing that damn oil constantly
In the Netherlands we have a ton of vegan choices at almost every restaurant. And at McDonalds almost every item has a vegan/vegetarian alternative.
Vegan McDonalds sounds awesome. Great video!
Thank you so much!!
Um....u making this made me want to cry❤ literally was thinking about how crazy the chemicals are at McDonald's and how they make us crave the flavor. While I hate that and will continue to say no to them, I still kinda wanted the flavor. Then here comes the another magic veagan man experiment that can be done at home and doesn't mean I need to poison my body for a taste on my tastebuds. Thanks for always doing you!!🎉
And the fries look even better than the mc donalds fries, I love dark fries!
We have the McPlant in the UK and McDonald's fries are vegan here.
Loving the detail and effort you went to, and appreciate the insight into how fast food differs from supermarket burgers (thinner, seasoned).
Loving your channel this year! Thank you!
How’s the Mcplant compared to regular McDs? There’s a location that sells them about an hour away and I’m wondering if it’s worth it.
Keep in mind, vegan take out is incredibly hard to come by here
@@Superkirbeh I had the McPlant when I was there 2 years ago. I was very happy with it, considering that I hadn't eaten at McDonalds for over a decade, and it was easy fast-vegan food.
In Germany we have the McPlant too, but it's not vegan 😢.
@Size15s McDonalds fries are vegan in the United States. He misspoke.
Just so you know McDonald's fries are cross contaminated by being cooked in the same oil as the filet-o-fish so they aren't technically vegan
I would be curious to see how you would re-create five guys hamburgers and hotdogs, Mark. Five guys has gotten so expensive, and it would be fun to eat it at home veganized.
It’s official, next time you’re in LA, we’re going to Mr. Charlies
YESS!!!! That'll be awesome!!!
Just want to point out how good and healthy you look brother! Keep it up yall look amazing 👏
This is the McDonalds we all need.
I had Mr Charlie’s in San Francisco. Unfortunately it was all the way across town from the VA hospital where I was preparing for surgery and so I DoorDashed it. It took forever to get there. It was cold. It might have been better if I had just gone there. But that wasn’t an option.
I saw someone make their own McDonald's onions by rehydrating dried onion flakes.
Also, the fry boil is interesting. Almost like a pickle brine?
I think you can do the same thing by first resting in water to release the starch, dry the potatoes, par-fry for 2 minutes, then rest for 10 minutes. Afterwards, finish the frying.
British fries don't contain any of the crud that's in US fries. thankfully, our food labelling and all that is pretty strict.
also, 'British chips' are cut a lot thicker!! (about 6x the thickness of an average 'fry')
also - we Brits don't have nearly enough vegan options in regards to fast food.
I'd welcome an entirely vegan McDonaldsesque outlet here. we're missing out (well, ok, I am - stupid food allergies!!)
I have never liked burgers, and I rarely have come across a good one like in Which Wich and a fancy restaurant in Minneapolis. They were both black bean.
What a great video! I appreciate the effort that goes into creating such content and delicious vegan food. Keep up the good work and keep rockin the kitchen ! Greetings from Switzerland. - Jesse
I think the impossible chicken patties are probably closer to the McChicken than the beyond version.
If it tastes good you already know it fails in replicating the original product, as it should taste like a dirty shoe and have the appearance of a flat tire. Crispy mcdonalds fries? get outta here
Can you one day replicate TGI Friday's potato skins 🥔🧀🥓
I went to Mr. Charlie’s when I visited my daughter in LA and the food was good but the service took extremely long and I had called ahead.
i've got a feeling, that in the UK the fries are fully plant based -no cows involved..
The McDonald's pickles are my favorite, I wish I knew where to get them.
Me too!!!
Vegan McDonald's is in India.
Mark I love you, but please stop using that uncanny psychopath look filter in your thumbnails
I'm not alone 🤣
I would love to be your neighbor and help you taste test!! LOL
Its not real McDonalds if you don't screw up the order! One of my highest viewed videos was me trying to get a cup of coffee at McDonald's. FIFTEEN MINUTES! For a cup of coffee.
Amazing recipes! Unfortunately, for me I’m grossed out by the sight of meat. I’m not vegan, but I developed some weird dislike for meat. Just knowing that blood and guts are involved. Not to mention, the idea and harsh reality that I’m eating something that was alive prior. Due to this unfortunate event in my life, I’m no longer able to consume meat.
I wanted to subscribe yet I was dismayed by the number of ads throughout the video. I am sick of ads interrupting the flow of your recipes. I can’t bear to hear another plug for McD or Hungry Root (calorie bomb). So, I will look elsewhere for a show that has fewer ads. Yours are too much.
This looks delicious, now have you EVER EVER through about making a “VEGAN” Egg Tuck Breakfast Sandwich (All Korean) ??? 🤔 Maybe
Just a FYI, Mccormick Hamburger seasoning is NOT vegan. In the ingredients list, it says natural flavors. I have Alpha-Gal which is an allergy to anything mammalian. I had a reaction. So I contacted Mccormick. They verified it contains some mammalian product under the natural flavors in the ingredients list.
We had the McPlant burger in Australia in 2022 McDonald’s only trialled it some stores
But here is the twist the product did include egg-based mayonnaise and dairy cheese , Funny How McDonald's Australia trialled a McPlant burger that was not 100% plant-based.
Oh my gosh I can't believe you're in Orlando!! Much love from Jacksonville! PLEASE open a restaurant so I can go lol
Every McDonald's in the UK has vegan meal options. Whilst I don't like McDonald's that is probably better for the animals than the odd Mr. Charlie’s. I'm lucky to have an independent Vegan take away relatively nearby that have everything from doner kebabs to cheese dogs! I had the Chickn' Chedar and Gravy burger for lunch today!
So glad in Europe McDonald fries are vegan :D We obviously don't have any decent vegan options available in most MD (as far as I know only a few countries have a plant based burger) and we don't have Mr. Charlies either... But hey, big fast food companies are changing because they know they have to so maybe MD will have more worldwide vegan options in the future!
I would gladly eat your recreations though as they seem so on point! The crispy fries are the winner for sure :D
McCharlie’s is amazing!!! The fries taste exactly like McDonald’s fries. I got the Big Chick and it was the best vegan burger I’ve ever had.
Wow I lived in SF my entire life and moved to Portland three years ago. There weren't any Mr. Charlie's 😂 I dont understand why Micky D's doesnt offer vegan options in the US, or the fast food chains have something *for a limited time.
Interesting about the fries, as a Canadian our McDonalds fries are actually vegan, they don't use the beef or milk seasoning, but to me they are still the iconic "McDonalds" fries flavour, would be curious to see what someone from the USA thinks about the fries we have up here.
I’ve never eaten at McDonalds. Fries look yummy ❤❤
McDonalds fries look nothing like those lol. They are usually poorly seasoned, lightly fried, and floppy.
Real McDonald's fries contain beef flavoring.. here in the U.S. anyways
@@randomoneforstuff3696 They didn't used to be; maybe that's what Mark and Monica are remembering?
I went to Mr. Charlie's today for lunch and got the Big Chuck Frowny meal and the fries and Big Chuck were terrific and their Green and Chipotle sauces were really good, but the nuggets were not very good at all. Almost had a fishy taste to them and the texture was pretty weird too.
Been to Mc Charlies a few times. It’s one of the good vegan burger restaurants. But Monty’s wins hands down!!!
Looks good! 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!!!
Question, just because I’m worried- they don’t toast the buns in real butter, right? I’m gonna double check right now and edit what I find.
Edit: Getting mixed info, but they might’ve used butter to toast the buns. I hope you guys don’t get sick :(
Are you sure about the beef in the fries? I'm pretty sure we used vegetable oil when I worked at McD.
I've had Mr. Charlies and it did taste just like how I remembered Mcdonald's tasting but better because zero animals were harmed. I'm gonna be making this for sure. There's also Plant Power in SoCal that has McD's thing going on.
Impossible burger was tested on rats so wouldn’t class it as vegan unfortunately
Is it me or have you never reviewed the Quorn products? There large breaded breasts or cubed non-frieds are staples for me.
Can we go to McDonalds and grab the bread , onions and pickles like you did?
I imagine bagged shredded iceberg lettuce would do it.
Lol, did you mean to have that weird freeze frame at the end of video?? 😅😅
Monica singing was so cute! 😂
Very Good job ❤❤ आप बहोत बढ़िया काम कर रहे हैं।
Thank you!
Now I need a Mr. Charlies!
There is no such thing as vegan McDonald’s only a plant based burger cooked on the same grill as meat, French fries coated with “beef” and fried in the same oil as chicken. From their website “When our suppliers partially fry our cut potatoes, they use an oil blend that contains beef”.
Yeah...which is why I made my own fries from scratch
Not great timing on the Blendjet ad!😂
What's the name brand of that air fryer?
Would like to try make this.
We get vegan McDonalds in the UK. I’m really surprised you don’t have it over the pond!
The UK has a far greater population of vegans, plant-based eaters, and flexitarians than we have in the U.S. There are vegan-friendly cities, but the culture itself is hostile to veganism.
while that's true - there aren't nearly enough of them around the country. I live in an area where there aren't many vegans (if there are any, they're in hiding...) and food allergies prevent me from picking up a McPlant in a regular McDs because the risk from cross-contamination is too risky (it's a level of hell I wouldn't inflict on anyone) especially in relation to the fries too. same for KFC - we do have one, but, its not easy to get to unless you have a car, or it's a nice hot day and you don't mind walking - if you can walk that far - which I can't!! so yeah, we definitely need more. it's taken me 12+ years to get my diet to a good place and mistakes tend to undo all that good work. the fast food industry needs to listen to our needs and act upon them.
They had a veggie burger in Canada a couple of decades ago, but it was a steamed fake meat style pattie (Yves) that wasn't so great tasting cooked that way and thus got dropped.
What kind of cheese did you use?
We got one of those here in Sydney now too in AU.
Mr. Charlies's is great!
lmao you got me, I thought you did the buns yourself. They looked so similar.
Next time consider putting faux beef flavoring on your fries to get it closer to the original McDonald's. :)
Love your content
Love your work
obsessed with monica’s face.. she’s so pretty x
Thank you! She is very pretty and just all out wonderful!
How do you know what a McChicken tste like if you are vegan? xD
Because I’ve had one before. Is that hard to comprehend? Do you think people are born not eating meat?
Do you think people forget what things taste like hahahaha come on
@@SauceStache So as you put it "It tastes Exactly like a McChicken" means you claim to remember its taste vividly, one does not do that unless it was eaten fairly recently, and from what I can tell, you have been vegan for at least 6 years so I highly doubt your claim
I’m already knowing this taste AMAZING!!! I just can’t do the beyond meat… Amazing video as usual
I would act like for McD’s to offer an impossible meat option like BK, when I was completely cutting out Red meats I would So enjoy an Impossible Whopper every few months. Really hit the spot and tasted super close to a reg one from what I remember, maybe a tad drier
I respect your dogged pursuit of recipes that will reproduce well known things to your satisfaction, going to great lengths to research recipes and sources of ingredients. I agree that crappy lettuce is essential to the home-made McDonald's experience, and I'm glad you didn't ruin all your hard work by using good quality veg, LOL! Merry Christmas (or whatever you two celebrate) and thanks for posting : )
Great video! Thanks Monica :)
I would try it. I hope they expand.
Would not want to promote or emulate McDonalds for any reason.
Good… then don’t. Don’t think this was much promotion more than promoting their opposition
👏🏾
No. No no. Don't go there.
What do you mean you "almost had a fire" from like 180°C Oil getting over the edge of your Dutch oven? It's not like you're cooking on a gas stove with a flame, it doesn't catch fire on your stove unless you put right on a glowing hot plate for a while (For most cooking oils, the flashpoint is around 600° F).
I dare you, pump up the heat on your stovetop and put a drop of oil directly on it and see whether it catches fire.
Don't worry it's fine, I fry all the time at home and never had a fire.
I don’t even want Vegan McDonalds lol 😂
… ? Why not?
I do.
Would like to try it, just for memory lane. I don't miss their garbage food at all.
this video turned me vegan i will never eat a v again
I think mcdonalds fries stopped using beef flavoring and milk a long time ago in the us. You must have seen an old recipe.
Before I made this video I double checked everything directly with McDonalds. You can find the nutrition information with all the ingredients on their website... they still use beef flavoring and diary unfortunately... www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/about-our-food/nutrition-calculator.html
Guys, what did happen to the boycott of vegans for Impossible Foods? (Didn't follow the news, just asking. 😏)
love the idea of a mcdonalds fry at home but to boil, deep fry and deepfry? why causing so much trouble.
Just bake some good oven fries in a lot of oil and spices, its not the same, but holy fuckg hell spend tofurkey seitan time on some fries for?
If you REALLY want those replica level fries... this is how you do it! And like I did you can make a huge batch that you can just pull out and fry or air fry whenever you want
McDonalds does not use beef flavoring. They are VEGAN because they used to use beef tallow and they got sued over a decade ago because some vegans loved the fries but didn’t know they weren’t vegan. That’s why the fries aren’t as award winning as they were. They use veggie oils now.
The fries are reconstituted with beef tallow flavoring. They're just not fried in tallow, like when I was a kid, decades ago. Also, the recipe for/manufacturing of McDonald's fries differs from country to country. In some countries, they are completely plant-based. There isn't a central McDonald's commissary.
I checked with McDonalds corporate before I made this video... you can actually find the information directly on their site. They still use Beef flavoring not tallow, and they use milk. www.mcdonalds.com/us/en-us/about-our-food/nutrition-calculator.html
The is US based.
This seems stupid as hell for a number of reasons.
Maybe look inward
@@SauceStache or just eat better food instead of recreating garbage
You're literally insulting someone over the food they chose to eat... That is stupid as hell and childish. Like me eating food I want really affects you to go out of your way to be insulting? Grow up
Why are you still promoting McDonald's in any sort of capacity?
Exactly
It's like saying, "hey, we buy vegan cause we'd hate for any animal to die, but don't care if we're ultimately funding those who are killing human beings in 🇵🇸 , as long as they're putting food on our plate". Disgusting.
I see your point with McDonald's, but I'm glad to hear about Mr. Charlie’s. I wish it was in my location.
Yea, honestly isnt hard for these influencers to at least make their stance on social issues blatant. Stand on business, but a lot of them refuse to
Wow somebody stop vegan guy from yt promoting huge a$$ corporation, real politics here yo
That's the grossest vegan option I've heard of, Vegan fast food 🤮
Why? Not all vegans want boring healthy stuff all the time!
@@maboelnreads Yep, same here...because it's trash food that taste like garbage. Why replicate trash? Make a good burger and fries....
@@maboelnreads He's also giving free press to one of the worst companies known to man...

There is no way that tastes like McDonald's fries, way too dark.yall are so full of it. The doneness of a fry chance the taste
"the doneness of a fry chance the taste" ?
