    Kids often sit on the bottom shelves, they move up when they get older. And it is ok to leave the sauna if it gets too hot for you, unless you were the one throwing the water to the kiuas. If you throw the water you take the heat, that's the rule.

      Yeah, first time in a Finnish sauna can be a bit jarring. As a Finn, you're conditioned into it gradually. Heat rises, so the lower you sit, the cooler it is.
      Once you do get used to it... Bliss.

  • @wardeni9603
    @wardeni9603 7 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    Don't mind the silence, Finnish people don't talk to strangers without reason (not even small talk), because it's considered rude to bother other people without a reason. Sauna is a place of both literal and spiritual cleansing, so people tend to just sit there in the quiet and think about whatever problems they have, unless you're going to a sauna with your close friends, _then_ it's usually either a deep conversation or a drunk one.

      +William Vangen Yeah, well Finland and Norway are extremely similar. I think Finland is culturally closer to Norway than it is even to Sweden (and we used to be Swedes). Like how during the summer Norwegians cross the border to get cheaper booze from Finland, and Finns take a ferry to Estonia to get cheaper booze ;D
      My family used to go to Norway every summer when I was little, the mountains and fjords are absolutely stunning (and filled with sheep for some reason) :D

    During the old days sauna was a holy place where you could experimence the whole cycle of life... Many people were (and is still) conceived in sauna, women gave birth in sauna and also it used to be tradition to wash the dead in sauna before the funeral.

      Oh wow thats very interesting. Ive been learning alot about Finland and trying to learn the language so when I go I'll be ok.
      I like the silence is golden. There are times when I just want to sit say at my Drs office and then I don't feel like talking the person next to me is trying to start a conversation. They also have a sign no cell phone use in office. Well no one listens. Just yesterday some guy next to me was arguing with someone on his phone. That's extremely rude and obnoxious.
      I have read that the Finnish sauna experience is great for your heart and blood circulation. The education system is one of the best! I have friends who are going bankrupt trying to pay off thier student loans. You go broke trying to pay. It pissed me off. Kids get accepted to a good University but cant afford it so they take out student loans. They also don't let you default either it's like the IRS. Anyhow I can't wait till I go to Finland

    You skin becomes smooth after sauna, because you sweat your pours empty of dirt and wash them too.
    So your skin is clean to its roots.

    Lol as a Finn it's so normal and no-brainer be naked in front of strangers in totally non-sexual way, but for others it requires some courage. Get more in touch with you natural uniform! (which is naked) There is nothing to be ashamed of.
    Also at sauna get-togethers (or whatever you wanna call it, we just call it "going to the sauna" or "saunominen") it's not unusual to just have sauna (going in and out, dipping in the lake or just cooling of etc.) for several hours (usually max 2-3 hours) and just have a good time of relaxation for the sake of it and casually drink cold beer (and ofc some water in between) for the whole time (you can even throw little bit of beer on the rocks of the kiuas and and have a sensational scent of barley for a short moment) It's totally a different kind of social gathering than just going to a bar or drinking with you clothes on doing something else. Also the price of it is usually just the price you pay for the amount of beer at the store. I love saunominen. I warm-up my electric kiuas several times a week. It's heavenly especially when you put it on and go do any kind of sport activity, and when you're done you can go straight to the heated sauna (obviously after a good showering) Sauna is best enjoyed when you don't try to think why you enjoy it. So shut up your mind and throw some löyly!

    • @sognsvann3

      NaWais total nudity is the standard in norway too. But we call it badstu. Badstu would be hillarious for english people as transelates directly to bathlivingroom .

    This is far from my own experience while staying with friends in rural Finland. For them, the Sauna is where you bathe yourself clean too. Their Sauna is equipped with buckets of cold and hot water, which you pour over yourself in between exfoliating yourself with sponges or washcloths lathered with bathing gel. No shower will clean you deeper than this method. I found this to be very therapeutic also. No matter how stressful my day has been, when I end it with the kind of sauna experience described above, it washed away any stress or anxiety I brought with me into the sauna.

    We had an awesome sauna at my old folkhögskola (best translation'd be swedish hogwarts school for adults). It had the text "En dag utan bastu är en förlorad dag" written on it, witch means "a day without sauna is a day lost". Truer words have never been spoken!

    You go to sauna for the relaxed, clean feeling afterwards. It's important to "punish" yourself with heat and then cool down again. This way all the crap from your body and skin gets removed. There's no better feeling than taking sauna in mid summer and have a cold beer while cooling off on the terrass
    edit: I heard this saying there are no generals in sauna. That pretty much sums it up. There are no ranks, no genders, just people. You forget about these things and just relax and mingle

    One thing that i didn't like was that you had swimming suits in Sauna. But i understand why. If you wan't to real sauna experience, you should take 5 guys that have beer stomach and go naked in sauna AND You have sit side by side like your skin touches with others. And Drink beer. It's not really a Finnish thing to bring towel or Swimming suits to Sauna. Now that we are in this topic. Fun fact: Finns are getting banned from public sauna in America because they are going there naked.

    In our area here in Norway, the saunas in older times were banned by the church priests. They recond this sauna culture was unmoralistic and devlish.

    It's actually not good for your hair if you don't get your hair wet in the sauna so it's a good thing you did!

      VenoStuff In finland we call it rallyenglish.

    • @lennis4739
      @lennis4739 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Both are common terms, but with different meaning. Finglish is mixing up words from the two languages, rallyenglish is english with a profound finnish monotonous accent.

    • @SES-Shepard
      @SES-Shepard 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The term "Finglish" comes from the early to mid 19th century when some finns moved to america, they didn't know how to speak english nor pronounce it properly.
      Therefore the finns developed a language of their own to communicate with the americans which they'd understand better since many finns have a lot of problems pronouncing english even if they can write/read it well

      Tbh country side sauna is always better. But The sauna they went (called löyly) might be pretty solid for a public sauna, because at least it is warmed by wood not electricity. Wood warmen sauna gives softer heat, electric sauna is worse.

    Sauna opens up all the pores on your skin, it expands your blood vessels and increases blood flow. I think that's why I've always felt so invigorated after one. :)
