    I attended a drum clinic by Max Roach many years ago at the local Guitar Center. I got there early and ran into Steve Smith of all people! The clinic finally starts, the place is packed to the rafters, and Max is brilliant. At one point he stops, talks about “Mr. Hi Hat”, and then calls out Steve Smith to perform it! What a fantastic evening.
    A commenter below said something similar, but I am truly grateful to have lived at a time when I could see Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Max Roach, and other legends before they passed. But I am also grateful for TH-cam and the folks who post these amazing videos to allow a younger generation experience some of the skill these giants brought to the game.

    The amazing Max Roach, one of the most musical drummers of all time!

    • @eclecticclay
      @eclecticclay 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Exactly! I always have gotten a sense from him that he's extremely aware of the pitch or shall we say melodic content - whether from pitch, timbre or whatever source - of his chosen medium. His rhythms are also more melodic to me than other great drummers, if that even makes any sense to say - they seem to breathe and move more like sax lines than other drummers. I like thinking about such things while listening to him on, say, "Saxophone Collosus."
      It's interesting, here, to listen to him artificially limit himself, both with just the hat and with lack of a surrounding tune - and still be himself.
      He'll always be my favorite drummer.

      You have to have an appreciation of the technical intricacies being performed to understand it. Keeping in mind it is a YT video, Mr. Roach is demonstrating how drummers manipulate various tones within specific rudiments to create the sounds you may be familiar with once integrated into popular songs. Only, he's doing it on less than 3% of the total instrument with effortless execution using a specific rudimentary cadence.

    One of the most amazing concerts I ever got to see was a Max Roach trio in December of '79. I think Cecil Bridgewater was with him, but I don't recall the third party.
    During the show, Mr. Roach did a variation on this solo. At some point, he lost (or perhaps meant to drop) one of his sticks, and continued using the index finger on one hand.
    The concert as a whole was characterized as "a drum clinic" by a friend at the time who was also there. He certainly showed people how it was done. It was magical!

      Interesting to read. I saw him here in Rochester at the Eastman School of Music in 1990 and prior to doing this he spoke of a clinic or convention (I forget) he performed at which included several drummers such as Art Blakey ("brought his thunder"). Then he mentioned another (again I forget, but I assure you I'm not making this up) whose performance this was based on which brought down the house. Wish I could remember who - some help, anyone?

This kind of crap really goes to show how arrogant the older generation are, especially the "you'll understand when you're older" bullshit.
      Neither of you got my point anyway, maybe you're senile or can't read, I don't know, but what I said was modern drummers are better and I stand by it. They learnt from the best drummers of the time and have improved. You think music should just stagnate and we should regard buddy rich or max roach as the best drummers to have lived? No, drummers like dennis chambers, steve smith, ?uestlove, tony royster jr, kenny aaronof just to name a few really popular ones are in my opinion far superior drummers that don't have one or two very old tricks, but can play a huge array of styles, grooves and wait for it...have better hand technique than the oldies. There are also literally millions of extremely competent drummers who not only play pop, but can actually play double stroke rolls.
      Seriously both of you need to get out more and play with younger musicians and expand your horizons and get over the fact that "you know better because you're older". Nobody cares about your age, just your skill
