The only nitpick is the use of 100watt 12volt panels. Ditch those and get some bifacial, residential style. 10, 370watt Aptos panels are cheap when on sale. Better production on cloudy days. Oh, and batteries. Batteries, batteries, batteries. Otherwise, very cool build.

Ecoflows or other comparable systems are a HUGE waste of money when used in a permanent installation. You're paying soooo much for the portability. EG4, SOK, and others make systems that go together like legos, and are a much better value.... but Ecoflow probably gave all this stuff to them for free sooooo.

Great video and great built. Very nice build on the solar stand. As high as the stand is off the ground for the solar panels, this is where you would benefit using bi-facial solar panels because of the ambient light provided by the space. Signature Solar has some great prices on 400W bi-facial panels made by Aptos. You would also benefit from an off grid system by EG4 where in that small space you could easily get 10KW with a 3000w inverter for less the price of the EcoFlow. I love EcoFlow and I own 7 units from them but sometimes you have to cut the umbilical cord and go with server rack batteries. Great Work!

moving the panels closer to the battery would also help. Running DC long distance is hard, maybe put battery in insulated box next to panels, then run your AC the longer distance. Would definitely help on those low production cloudy days.

Igree with some comments that this is more like gas powered system - hybrid solution. Solar is taking energy for lighting and electronics. Heating is done by gas - this is were most kw/h is needed. Still great job - you can stay off grid. To be fully autonomous add just stove and you done.

To go entirely off grid, those boxes he has won't do it.
the gas suppliment is taking a lot of power consumption away from the electric system but you have to supply gas.
They have a small frig, that is huge for solar, the led lights are great as long as you can get adequate lighting, the ones they chose look good, but you know the camera has light correction .. so.
For what he has, its ok, but he has to supply the propane so off grid? not so much.

Don't understand how you "saved" 15K. Unless you mean you didn't spend it on bringing in power you didn't have to worry about 24/7. You can get a quality Champion generator with a remote key fob start/stop, for probably way less than you spent on the experimental one. They will also run on multiple fuels. Interesting build, but again your running a good part of the heavy lifting on gas, so solar is just an assist in your case.

A vid showed using a reflective mylar (silvered) increased the morning and night charges, and helped the noon ish charges.
total charge was still lower than the roof mounted panels of same ratings.
but not to knock vertical panel technology.
A nomad had the side of their RV covered with vertical panels. they were always active. when parked, they could tip them up so they were at an angle to the sun. It did work, can't knock what was built and working.

Which is a biway flow, to not only charge the unit but be charged from it. While allowing the firmware of the inverter unit to see the remote unit wholly. Looks like its right on the battery unit tho.

Find it shocking that this is called this "off-grid", but requires some kind of gas (source not mentioned) to power the heat, hot water, and stove. Did this require running a natural gas line, or is the home using propane?
Noticed a red petro gas container next to the generator. If the home is running off NG, or propane, then it would make sense to tie in the backup generator into the same fuel source. One less hassle, failure point.
The electric test was a "power" test, not "energy" test. The 1300 Watts measured would need to be multiplied by hours of usage to get a daily "energy consumption". If the battery system is 2600 W, then it would only could sustain the max load for a couple hours. Probably 4-6 hours under a less demanding typical load. Adding more battery capacity if need longer run time.
BTW: the solar panels installed appear to be 12 V type, which is a more costly and provide less energy than typical 1 m x 2 m full-size panels. Higher capacity battery storage typically use 48 V, so a DC-to-DC converter may be required to operate existing 12 V loads.
Do like the home (AirBnB) and the solar panel mount design, but feel the systems for supplying energy could have been better researched.

That's why there's a battery storing the electricity. The gas generator only gets used if solar can't keep it charged.

Also if you tie the dual fuel to those propane tanks, it will run a lot longer.

Yes obviously. In a lot of the country propane is much cheaper than electricity.... and doesn't require infrastructure😂

I dont feel like you can say that a home is energy-efficient just because it isn't using electricity. I want to see a ground heating/cooling-system running on solar and maybe gas-stowe running on bio-gas produced by bio-waste.

  • @MrLasox
    @MrLasox 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

So instead of electricty bill, you are paying for the gas that's normally more expensive.

This is green-washing at its finest! Not only did you pay a ridiculous $10k for a camping-grade solar system, but your whole plan to be “environmentally friendly” relies on putting every major appliance on gas. “Why not gas”, you say? All you did was gas. And then you paid $10k for a system that should have cost

So gas water, heater, and stove. Ummmkay... Its cool for sure, but you could probably go full electric with a small heat pump, tankless electric and some beefier batteries / inverter. The biggest trick would be that hot water unless there was room for a small tank.

    No grid AC required.........???
Gas cooktop, gas heat, gas hot water and a gas generator.......... where does your water come from? Is there an AC well pump?
    Definitely cute.
    Definitely not solar powered......
    except lighting.

Electric water pump, fridge, coffee maker, lights, toilet fan, electric ERV, electric heat trace for water line, electric computer in gas tankless water heater, electric UV bulb, electric bathroom fan, electric range hood and of course outlets to power laptops phones, speakers etc. it’s as electric as it can get for that level of panels and batteries.
