I keep going back a few years ago when a friend and I were motoring throug the canal at LaConnor and saw this derelict boat. On our first trip it was still floating. On our second trip it had sunk and was just a mess covered with mud layers. I smile every time I see her today and think back of what she was, Still have picures of her sticking out of the muddy water.

As a child with my father in the early 1960's I remember distinctly fishing along side the Western Flyer many times out of Bodega Bay in Northern California. She was a big part of my childhood fishing memories. When she comes back home to Monterey I'll be waiting for her to arrive, day or night, rain or shine ❤

So they put thrusters and electric hybrid drive to use this boat on coastal research where bigger tonnage boats aren't allowed. For that kind of stuff, you need to be able to sit in a GPS ordained position for hours in some cases. This boat is going to work.

I followed the restoration of this magnificent vessel here on TH-cam right up to the point it was taken out of the boat shed it was restored in.
Unfortunately, that’s where the series ended, for me and others who followed the project it was hugely disappointing because there was no further filming or updates of the rest of the fitting out work.

I quite literally check daily to see if a video has been made 😢 Sincerely hope that all is well and everyone involved is healthy. Looking forward to some sort of word…positive or not on what is happening. In the meantime I wish you all good health and be safe

As a child of the boomer generation John Steinbeck and Woody Guthrie were those who most popular chronicled the Great Depression and the evevnts that led up to the WWII years and lent a glimpse into the travails that our parents and grandparents were struggling through during those times. The addition of the house makes the boat look almost near completion. Kudos to the crew and administrators who have had to do this work in quite uncertain times, somewhat appropriate considering the background of the boat and the books that made this vessel so iconic in American literature. Thank you to the entire conglomeration of those who have been involved in the project of bringing the Western Flyer back from the brink of destruction to being a wonderful vehicle of education for literature, the environment and boat building.
