This looks like it might just be a software problem without any hardware damage. If there is any way to reset it (restoring the software from scratch) it will probably be fine again. (If there is no way with LEGO products directly, a technique as used for PyBricks with the other hubs might work here as well to restore the software.)

This is why. Something's out of place/broken because he slammed the dang thing so hard.
If I had to guess, the screen, being one long screen, are actually saved as a bunch of really long screens, and the update caused them to become offset.

This is more than most likely a BIOS problem with the new ROM. You said you have a prototype, so it probably has a different BIOS. If there's anybody willing to dump the correct prototype ROM and BIOS, you could probably flash the BIOS and/or ROM to how you got it.
