Anchor Lezak’s 46.06 sec was insane. The fact that his first 50 split was 0.23s slower than Bernard, his 2nd 50 split 0.90s (way)faster, makes his team’s win even more incredible . Sports are intriguing, and it’s undeniable that there be flukes though…..
The GREATEST relay in the history of Olympic swimming is the victory of the underdog USA womens team against the East German team, in the finals of the 4 x 100 meter relay final, Montreal 1976. That was a story straight out of a Hollywood film, only , it was real ! Still get teary eyed when seeing that performance by the Americans!
I’ve watched all kinds of races. Track and field sprints and marathons. Great horse races, including The Kentucky Derby and the Breeder’s Cup Classic. I watched this in a dingy motel on the road with my parents. I think it might be the greatest race I’ve ever seen. The fact that the world record stands 16 years later tells you everything.
Don't be an idiot. They broke the world record by nearly four seconds. Everyone on that relay swam fast and deserved to be there. Not every can be THE fastest of all time.
@AndyMatts44 Stop it. Lol obviously they are all fast. Almost every team that race broke the previous WR. Cullen Jones hopped in with a -0.59s lead and finished his split +0.43s behind. That is more than a whole second which is an eternity on the 100m. That is inexcusable. If Lezak didnt turn into superman on the last 25m we all know the biggest reason for the silver.

Starting from the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996, and until the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020 (six Olympic Games in a row) in the Men's Backstroke at distances of 100 and 200 meters, the representatives of the USA won, until He came - Evgeny Rylov. It was He who broke this US backstroke streak that began with the last Millennium.
No, the greatest ever was the american girls beating east german 'men' in 1976 in a 4x100 freedtyle relay. This one happened because the not so bright Frenchie stayed too close to the divider and was dragging Lezak on his back. Not that i get goosebumps watching it but i have to be honest here. Those girls beat some genetically modified specimen. 😊
That's just silly.. Lezak could only make that time being aside and behind Bernard by riding his wave. If you ever swam semi-professionally in a group you'd know that being first is exhausting as you need to break the water while being second is a stroll in the park as you have way less water resistance. Lezak lost more than once being chased by a guy riding his wave and passing him in the last 15 meters or so. This time around he got closer to the other lane, waited and then exploded being the veteran he was. Bernard started ahead but couldn't increment the distance enough to avoid Lezak's comeback who swam the fastest 100m split ever recorded with a 46.06.
He took out the first 50 too fast. That's what happens when your muscles run out of glycogen and are riddled with lactic acid. It's very common in swimmers when they gauge their speed wrong. You'll hear references to "getting the piano dropped on you." Don't be an idiot.
Unbelievable almost all of them broke the world record. The greatest indeed.

Там нет ничего невероятного, он просто плыл на волне чемпиона Бернара. Плыви Бернар около другой кромки, разрыв бы был более секунды
@@ededoo5587 dude, u r paradoxical: your comment simply explained why it is incredible though .........😅
Absolutely
Absolutely legendary. Will go down as the greatest relay performance in Olympic history!
How do you compare this to this year's 4x100 medley relay
Perhaps the greatest swimming race of all time!
saw it live and never screamed my lungs out ! what a moment!1
Haha same here still remember watching it live
One of the greatest memories I’ll ever have in my lifetime.
Watching this during the Olympics back in the day I too was yelling for them, and with that unimaginable win, it's a race one never forgets.
You can just imagine how great race it was just by seeing 3 swimmers were ahead of world record line at the same time 💗
A huge Salute 💕💕
Thats the most exciting relay i’ve ever seen in my entire life
most doped lmao
I get goosebumps every time I watch this. Love it! ❤
This WR still standing since then even 16 years later
Honestly, this isn't worth watching without the commentary. It makes it soooo much better and can still give you chills.
Greatest relay anchor ever seen in any sport.
What a race💥!
Phelps so lucky.

como extraño a phels...que gran recuerdo este.....
Proudest I’ve ever been as an American
The greatest race in Olympic swimming. The impossible became a possible reality. Nothing short of a miracle.
“HERE COMES LEZAK! UNBELIEVABLE AT THE END! HE’S DONE IT! THE U.S. HAS DONE IT!”
Chills. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Not having the commentary from Hicks and Gaines is a miss here
Still the fastest 100 metre split in swimming history by Lezak
Can you remind me how long the weather was?
Until 2024
It's 2nd fastest now
UNBELIEVABLE (=incroyables) duels entre la France États-Unis 🏊♂️🥇🤙Magnifique ✨🏆
Jason holds the greatest relay swim of all time, Bernard was the record holder in the 100 in that same era. that was all heart.
Imagine breaking the world record and still came in sixth place

How can you not have the announcers during this !!!!
I’m so excited
Greatest *swimming* relay race.
Best actual relay race was obvs Jamaica 2012 in the Athletics.
Imagine breaking world record and still not winning the medal 😭
Love the commentators
now the full-body suit with polyurethane and neoprene was banned in 2009 by FINA its hard to get to the 2008 World + Olympics record
It's best with the commentators
It’s shame it wasn’t a bigger venue!
Le plus beau relay de l'histoire de la natation sportive. La France méritait de gagner. C'est aussi ça la beauté du sport.
France deserved silver - they got it
@@dmckechnie1😂😂😂
Cullen Jones got an A on the group project just for being there

Bernard a été tellement mauvais ce jour là ! Jamais la France n'aurait dû perdre ce relais !
from his scream you can see hes having asthma lol, 90% asthmatic US swimming team
How about London 2012?
Sure was the greatest
Whos here to see the black guy
He's fast
@@gericisapro7272they all were fast.
Cullen Jones ftw
Me.
Not me

Phelps screamed bcos he was underwhelming in this match.

Американцы жестоко уничтожили Францию
London is higher
Just look at these dopeheads make me high!
Just inhuman
Great , but black swimmer in usa was bad
I think the last French guy placed a bet on the course and deliberately threw the finish away. I mean, last 20 meters he was barely moving. Shame
