Despicable, unprofessional behavior by Connors, who got away with some stuff that should not have been tolerated. He was my favorite player back then, despite his tendency towards vulgarity & unprofessionalism. I put up with that stuff because I loved his devoted energy & his unusual style of play. It was hard to take your eyes off him.
To be an American & ardently booed in the championship of your home country… what could be more your brutal??? I watched this match live on TV, breathlessly. I’ve always been awed by Aaron’s maturity, self-control & classiness on display. Every bit as important: his humility. He respected what a legend Jimmy was, how thrilled folks were by Jimmy’s unexpected run at his age, and the mutually passionate relationship Jimmy always had with US Open fans. I witnessed that relationship in person several times … and it was ELECTRIC. Magic! Especially at night matches. The cooler temperatures enlivened the whole atmosphere. I hope young folks can feel inspired by Aaron’s professionalism & sportsmanship in this match. THIS is how a Grownup behaves. It was the standard back then, and is meant to be - for always.

After watching this match between Krickstein and Connors there definitely should have been some drug testing being done on Connors. No way a 39 year old person can play 2 five set matches in row and win both of them. I would bet my house Jimmy was on some type of steroid for his lower back problems, and maybe even some cocaine being used. But tennis is the worst on drug testing. I am 51 years old and I have been playing tennis since the age of 16 and I have seen every type of match and as a adult I have been noticing things I would have never noticed as an 20 year old person. It’s my opinion that this match was scripted for Connors to win on his birthday, and perfectly scripted 5 set match.
Doing cocaine during the match wouldn't have helped Connors. The effects of cocaine wear off rather quickly, leaving you more tired than you would've been otherwise. That's why coke users are always running off to the bathroom to use again - you have to keep snorting it to maintain the high. Connors couldn't have done that, obviously. I don't know about steroids, but no way did he use cocaine while playing.
The Wikipedia article "Doping in Tennis" states that only "anabolic steroids" are prohibited. The kind of steroid you mention is anti-inflammatory. Andre Agassi used Cortisone for his back pain consistently near the end of his career without violating any PED prohibition. In my opinion, cocaine would be performance-detracting vs. performance-enhancing over the course of a 5-set match. Drugs like cocaine and speed (amphetamine) only give short bursts of energy before a crash hits causing increased emotional and mental instability. WW II pilots were given speed just before bombing runs after all night flights to Japan because they needed to wake-up for a few minutes of intense activity/battle. Using speed as a kind of "enhanced coffee" would likely give an edge under these circumstances. I agree that MOST 39-year-olds would not be able to do what Connors did. But Connors was not most 39-year-olds. He was one of the most gifted tennis players of all time with a work ethic and will to win that rivals that of Rafa Nadal. Mac emphasized this throughout his match commentary. In addition, Mary Carillo emphasized that the U.S. Open WAS Connors' tournament. Those "PEC" -- "performance-enhancing crowds" -- gave him that extra burst of adrenaline and "fountain-of-youth" which willed him to win those matches. Magical times. Although the athletes are certainly "bigger, stronger, faster" today, we haven't seen such electricity since, IMO.
A match 4 hours and 41 minutes long? Now imagine if Connors held up a little bottle of 5-hour energy as he's walking away from his end of match interview, and he just points to it and nods. If Connors developed that product and chose to reveal it right there at $20 a bottle, he would have made a fortune. 😁
33 years later, STILL amazing
One of the greatest matches ever. Pure desire and determination by James Scott Connors. 💪
AS A TEEN I HAD A CRUSH ON ARRON KRIKSTEIN. THESE WERE GREAT TIMES IN TENNIS.
Top notch editing job to get pieces of the match from other coverage while CBS was doing something else. Thank you!
Thanks for providing WHOLE match coverage/ Amazing!
"You are an abortion. You are an abortion! You know that?" I holler and scream EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Thumbs up just for the editing job alone! Obviously an incredible match.
1:48:07 The moment you‘ve been waiting for
I feel it's ALMOST just as iconic as John McEnroes "You cannot be serious" outburst
Krickstein gets credit for handling himself with class with the crowd against him.
i thought it was very classless by the new yorkers for clapping when krickstein missed a 1st serve

Krickstein had some really bad calls to help jimmy win the match.

Greatest match of all time arguably
Que bueno eta a ganado con el alma siendo tan mayor que mérito felicidades
Not even sure Krikstein's own parents wanted him to win!
half of the ball was in on the conners slam
If Krickstein won this match..I don't think he would have ended up having to give tennis lesson at some club today
US Open had really bad tv viewpoint at eye level back then.
horrible over rule in a tie break: Conners had a right 2 b pissed
Krikstein had such a weird style . He always seems late to take his racquet back on both sides
he was homosexual

Wonder how a near 71 year old Connors would take to Pickleball ?
If I knew what an asshole Connors was, I would have rooted for Krickstein instead of Jimmy
Terrible Connors, terrible crowd, terrible behavior. If they would watch Christians and lions in that court, this crowd would do the same.
F U. Connors was a legend at 39. This is sports.

@@roblatham6265 he literally got steroid shots before and after matches! Apparently you don’t understand how betting works!
