3 Steps to a Perfect Violin Bow Hold: The Bow Hold Gauntlet

    If it were as simple as saying "just put your fingers here" then I would never see a bad bow hold again. But we don't hold the violin bow in the way we do 'just because.' Each finger has a specific function and job in violin technique, and learning the bow hold properly must take that into account. In this video I will give you 3 progressive exercises that will not only perfect your bow hold, but also teach the fingers their proper function and improve your overall violin technique and sound quality.

    JFC this is so hard haha this is easily the best lesson so far though. Ive gone through 5 and it didn't start clicking until this one. Keeping the thumb bent is the hardest part for me. It feels so much more secure with it and the pinky locked but I know everybody keeps saying thats like the worst thing you can do lol

    I always implement these exercises in my studying for the bow hold, but I came across that sometimes my pinky flips around and loses stability, falling from one of the sides. I'm not really sure why that happens but It makes me feel that I don't have 100% control of the right hand. Thanks for the videos!

    Coming back to violin (which I played for like 7 years) slowly after a very struggling injury. My bow hold got very weird so I intend to work on that. These exercises look VERY useful. I’ll probably report here each week to feel motivated.

      @@stikfamaster2 well well well i forgot the existence of this comment lmao but the injury is chronic, it kicks my ass so bad when i play the violin (not everytime but i need to have a good day to play it as in pain) i sometimes play it but tbh i dont see any support from my family but when i gain my own money ( which will be this summer i want a mini job) will enroll in violin classes. Also my bow hold got better but since i lack my old flexibility in both hands i struggle but who says it is impossible right? I dont wanna give up on this tbh. Thank you for asking, i did a little trauma dump tho sorry😭

    @SF-ru3lp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    P.S. Mr Murphy I saw the practice bow stroke bring done with the index finger of the left hand poking through the gap between the stick and the hair (at bow tip). This works really well to balance the bow, see the sideways motion and avoid touching the bow hair. G Ire

    I learned that a finger should use the dot on the frog . The fourth finger. I would never have played the violin if the bow hold was this complicated. We were taught to shake out your hand and then set the fourth on the dot on the frog.

    Anyone have opinions on the "bow hold buddy" plastic gadgets that attach to the bow and give you grips to keep your fingers around? Obviously no substitutes for strengthening and developing the right hand ability, but maybe helpful as a reminder (you would bump against it if your fingers went off track?)
    I'm going to do these exercises religiously but was curious if any of those gadgets would be additional help getting started. They are marketed pretty heavily at beginners, which i am

      For what it's worth... I started this bow hold by exercising bow hand using a pencil (not the round-sided ones). You train your hand to move fingers only keeping the rest of the hand 'immobile' by balancing a coin or and egg cup on the back of the hand (whilst practicing the 'see-saw' and 'jellyfish'). I found it a brilliant start in how to learn the workings of this bow hold. Hope it helps you. Best regards. G Ire

      Thank you for your drtailed videos your channel is great. This especially is a very useful video (and I watched a lot of bow hold videos since I just started a month ago and don't have a teacher yet)
      I must say it's very hard for me to keep my pinky curved. Unfortunately the tutorials I started with had no emphasis on the pinky at all and now I feel somewhat stable stroking with a locked straight pinky. When I curve my pinky the bow feels like it's about to slip out of my hand or at least the pinky slips away and if it magically doesn't I notice that suddenly my thumb is locked. I try doing the jellyfish and the seesaw excercise with the bow while taking off a bit of the weight with the left hand since I can't seem to be able to hold a pencil like that at all. Will this method help or is there anything else I could do ? Thanks!

    This is going to be so useful, except for the fact that I feel forced to shorten the terms of practice so as not to finish it being 200 years old. 🤷‍♂ (8:04 every *week?!* Are you serious?! My intention is to finish it in one life 🤨).

      No. You can be taught the correct bowhold in a day. For it to stick and be a part of good technique, however, takes time, work, and guidance.
