The tip about tackling a small thing at the beginning of the day is a great idea. My job is demanding and at the end of the day, I have such little energy for anything. Then taking care of my 2 dogs takes up a lot of my energy outside of work. Thanks for this. Saving this video

“Clutter is unmade decisions” 🤯 yes!! 💯 so simply put, and you have such understanding and compassion. Decision paralysis is debilitating 🥶 On a lighter note as a ‘storyteller’ type, I Bloomwood-ed my cavalier on an afternoon walk 17 years ago, best impulse shopping spree retail therapy ever 😉 👋🏼🍀💚

I am definitely the overwhelmed! I work full time, I have MS and arthritis which affect my flexibility and mobility as well as causing fatigue. In addition my husband doesn't see clutter or even think of it as a bad thing, and his adult son who lives with us has no awareness of clutter, dirt or what to do with trash.

      Maybe you could hire help?

    • @ginalombardi2507
      @ginalombardi2507 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Indeed, get help. You are not in charge of everyone’s mess. In some states in the USA, there is Task Rabbit. Owned by IKEA, and you can hire folks for just a few hours. My chronic health condition flared up last spring, right in the middle of some renovations. I hired Task Rabbit and said, I point and you put away. I am not lazy, but no energy. It really helped. Sometimes check with senior centers. They may have a list of retired folks who are handy. What I liked is I can tell them what I need, better than a cleaning service for clearing clutter. Then after you get stuff done, then a cleaning service. Your husband and his son can chip in for the cost. If they will not clear and clean up, then you are paying someone to do the job and they are responsible for the money it takes.

I actually do talk to my home (and other inanimate objects - especially my car!), and of course, the pets. I'm pretty well organized myself, but I never got around to breaking my habit of throwing the mail on the counter to open later, which then becomes next week. And, OMG, I am such a "storyteller" type - I have lots of STUFF, all of which I love (yes, it brings be joy) because of the stories attached to it! BTW, the peacock table behind you is fabulous!

It’s not that I’m dirty or lazy, but i AM super indecisive and easily overwhelmed by having to make definite choices. I will attempt to implement these tips, thank you❤

The one that surprised me was storyteller. It made me look at some nicknames I had floating around and thinking did I even like this. And it was there because I had gotten it from someone and there was some story attached to it. Am going to look around the house and see if I find some more things and ask them Why are you here.? Would I have bought you myself? Do I even like you? I even have stuff that I thought I am supposed to like.

You know what I love to do, because I don't have the money to just shop away, I got on Amazon and look for things I want to eventually get, a piece of furniture or an appliance, and add them to a private list, so that it feels like I'm shopping, but spending no money, then when I have the money to get an item on the list, I pick the one that works best for me and I buy it. I may have 10 different items of a particular nature on the list, but I only buy one of them. it gives me the endorphins of shopping without spending too much money. I know this doesn't have much to do with clutter, other than not buying a lot with nowhere to put it, but it is something that satisfies that itch.

I had a shirt that I kept wearing even though it had holes in it and I kept saying I'm going to throw this shirt away and never did. Yesterday I pulled it out of the dryer and started to put it back on the hanger. I decided no! Threw it into the trash. It was liberating!!! Also recieved my new cat scratch post. Put it together and threw the old one directly in the trash. Amazing!!!! It doesn't have to be a huge clear out. Have a donation box handy and when you pick something up in your day and ask yourself, why do I have this? Directly into the trash or box!

  • @NoDecaf7

Ahh, the nomad life, both versions.
I bring things out of their home and neglect to put them away or just keep them near their home. The coat example, I'll take my coat off, put it on the floor next to the hook kind of thing. Or if I declutter to make room for new items, those new items will be unboxed and float around for a while. I have many of those things staring at me right now. Heck there's a corner in a room of my house full of cardboard boxes. I've convinced myself I'll need them for Christmas gifts lol. I just need to break them down already.

I am definitely a nomad! I used to have heaps of clothing on my bedroom floor and chair that I would sort through every few weeks. For the last 2 years though I managed to establish and keep the habit of putting my clothes away at the end of the day! I am so proud that I've actually kept it up for so long and it makes a huge difference. I still leave lots of other things lying around where they shouldn't be, but I try to put them away if I notice them. I also used to do the dropping-the-coat-on-the-floor habit and switched it eventually too :D

  • @AWanderingEye

This was a really good video in that it got me thinking and I ended up journaling about my disorganization/clutter issue. Thank you for the prompt!
I am definitely a combination type in that some things just don't have homes, some things have homes but have reasons for not being returned to them, other things are gumming up my decluttering works due to the story behind them; another large group are the excess items bought with good intentions or due to my shopping acumen only to not even start to get used.
Each area of the household has something going on. But I too readily give up my time to work on those for family who have their own issues. "Overwhelm" is definitely the name of my neighborhood, but I don't believe I have a serious issue as I am able to keep the clothes washed and organized, food bought, prepared and consumed; and, the surfaces relatively clean (although there is a ring of clutter on all). Beyond that and it is a crapshoot as to when things will get done.
I like the idea of starting the day with a small win. My tendency is to map out all the steps then get bored/distracted or pulled away, so I will have to just work on the first thing that catches my eye. Wish me luck!

I hear ya April .. i lost 25 lbs and now my clothes swallow me. I keep buying the same size clothes and they swallow me too or fall off. But i'm afraid to trust size labels. Clothes are so iffy .. one item in one size might fit perfect but in another item the same size can be way too big or small. Try on ALL your clothes and keep what fits good now (even if it's only one outfit) and what doesn't donate asap. Having those bigger unused clothes around is dangerous because subconciously we think they are there 'just in case' we need them. If we do gain the weight back we'd want new-er clothes anyway, but Heaven forbid we gain the weight back! Be proud of & embrace the new you & let those 90 lb clothes go with the 90 lbs of weight.
Go to thrift stores and try on clothes till you find good fitting stuff and that will help you ease into your new self without busting the bank. You've got this!

Second type of nomad, some storyteller, and definitely overwhelmed. I also am bad about doing retail therapy, but I don't leave things in bags or tags on. I truly want everything to have a place, I just have no idea how to figure out those places. I'll try to do little bits at a time, but it's so easy to see all the things I need to do and lose any energy I manage to have with fibro. Add in the 7 cats to care for (who are constantly knocking things over and making messes) and it's madness

Youcare so right with what you say. I can relate to some of the issues very well. Your solutions and tipps are worth a mint. However, my biggest problem is that I cannot get rid of things (DIY-stuff, things to upcycle/repurpose) or stop stockpiling when it comes to food or any other item for the bathroom etc. This originates from the many years I lived on social welfare. I never had enough of anything, all the time, something was missing etc. I cannot stop this behaviour. It is anxiety that keeps me from quitting to stockpile. What should I do about it?

Clutter is unmade decisions. Wow. SO. ACCURATE!!!!! I have to remember that one. That and having enough bandwidth. Those two points resonated so much with me! I see myself as a little of all of them. I'm home this week and I'm trying to do a little bit a day. Went thru my closet because I have a ton of clothes taking over my bed. Figured if it's still in the closet, do I really need it? I kept one size down and moved them to the back of the closet so I dont have to figure out what fits when I'm getting ready in the morning. I also moved 4 times in the past 10 years. Most ppl get rid of when they move, but I just threw things in boxes and said I'd figure it out later. How's that working for me??? HAHAHAHAH Thank you for your videos. When I'm stressed or have a headache I put on your videos. They have a calming effect on me, esp when you have smooth jazz playing in the background.

    Recovering Bloomwood here.
I’m just embarrassed over my past consumption, but I don’t have problems deciding to get rid of things bc I’m surprisingly not attached to the them.
The problem I do have is actually getting them out of my home. In the past I’ve donated and donated, but soon learned 90% of my stuff was ending up in landfills in low-income countries. Why should MY trash travel such long distances just so innocent people have to dispose of MY trash?
So, now, I separate things out for people I know will make use of them and I PAY money to ship it to them. For example, my aunt recently retired and became a part time seller, so I donate a lot of (clothing and household) items to her. She then gives away or finds buyers who need those items, so nothing is wasted or trashed. She loves it bc she gets free items and make some money to pay for upgrades around her home. I also have a friend with two daughters and cousins who fit my size that I also clothes send to.
It’s not a perfect solution, but at least I know that they’ll use them. I just have to stay on top of the shipping out faster.
Thanks for always motivating us to reflect and take action.

High functioning overwhelm here with a sprinkle of 2nd nomad (I currently have a bamboo steaming basket I ordered that I can not find a place for it, I keep moving it around out of my way every time I cook and I just don't want to deal with it ARGH). When I'm feeling less overwhelmed I try to tackle a few things at once and I also use an online planner for tasks, even weekly or daily tasks, to keep me on schedule. Otherwise I feel overwhelmed and do NOTHING. Decluttering has also helped so much with all of this (I used to be way worse than I am now). I'm thinking the kitchen items need a new declutter to make room for the steamer. It's difficult, as I cook a LOT and actually use pretty much everything.

Totally agree with the storyteller! Especially when it comes to sentimental items. But, we're not obligated to keep things people gave us! Also, our memories are in us and not the thing, so I've learned to retell the story or to write a new chapter, like...my dad made this cradle for my favorite baby doll when I was little, (that's where the story used to end) and now I'm passing on that joy to another little kid.

I am definitely a nomad kind of person! I take things out of their home and say...I will put that back later. One of my biggest issues is that my dad lived with me. He brought a lot of the stuff he owned from my childhood and now that he has passed I still have many things I do not want. I am slowly letting go but it creates a terrible amount of clutter until I can get through something.

So far I thought I was a nomad, storyteller, and overwhelmed. I've looked at so much advice that says don't buy things. That's been the least of my problems! I think at the root I'm a storyteller. As I've added to my household (my husband came with 2 girls whom I love), I've moved things around and never gotten all the stuff rehomed to my satisfaction. I think the Panini changed the overwhelm from occasional overwhelm to a more long term issue. I keep hoping the overwhelm will pass, but it's a lot harder as I balance working from home half the time and going in to work, still cooking so much more from home and avoiding the quick "Let's go out to eat tonight."

Also there may be some hoarding disorder involved. It includes the buying component.
ADHD leads to distraction and things get laid down on the way to their new home.
Or in my case, I have to remind myself each time that I make a sandwich to put my ingredients away BEFORE I take my sandwich to the table. My fridge is behind my counter to the right. While my table is to the left. If I sit down at the table before that, I forget to put them away until maybe an hour or two later when I look at that counter again.

Kay, does your channel have any merch?
I had the great idea while watching this video of a white t-shirt with a nice black font stating:
"You are just humaning...we all are. We have to forgive ourselves for the behaviors that we naturally have a tendency to do."
    --- Kay _____________ , the Organized Soprano TH-cam channel
NB: I don't know how to spell humaning (it may need another n in there)
Usually these quotes are verbatim but I kind of patched it together using the ellipses, I think I got your intent correct (?).
I would prefer to have your last name but couldn't locate it in my quick search of your channel hence the blank
An alternate merch item would be a baseball cap(here I'm thinking something in pastel options with satin fabric) stating:
"Just another person humaning over here"
or some such. A little quirky, a little funny --- a conversation starter.
Either way I like your channel's concept and the colloquial vibe of this "humaning" idea. There is certainly something to build on there. jmho.

i have kind of a unique issue with clutter. i have a pile of stuff in my living room, but i use the items alot. they just don't have a proper home. I have no space to put them away to make my living room look less messy. Do you have any suggestions?

Try deciding where you would look for the item first. If that space is full, is there an item(s) in that space that could be declutter to make a home for the item. Small bites - not a huge declutter. Decide to only have as many things as you have space to keep.

Is Notion anything like Microsoft Notes? Or Access? If you're not familiar with those that's ok, it kinda looked like one of those but used for projects.

What if your other half is the one who needs to declutter. My progress is stagnated because I can't get into the rooms I want to tackle.
