I am confused between diatonic and the pentatonic, when should I use them? let's say in a C Major Scale chord.

The stretch part is the hardest thing for me especially on the upper frets 1-5

Seems to me, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but the diatonic pattern used here is the same as combining the 2nd and 3rd pentatonic positions.
Thanks for watching, Mark! To answer your question, remember: if you played the any pentatonic scale in all positions, you're only playing 5 notes over and over again. Those notes repeat in octaves, but the notes are still the same.
For example, if you're playing in C major pentatonic, in any position, you are playing these 5 notes: C D E G A.
When you're playing C major diatonic, you're adding two more notes into the mix, F and B: C D E F G A B
So, to answer your question, no, combining pentatonic positions does not produce diatonic, but pentatonic and diatonic positions do overlap, all across the fretboard.
If you play all the diatonic positions, but leave out all the Fs and Bs (the 3rd and 7th notes), you're playing pentatonic.

...the answer is "sort of." :-)
Let me explain:
There are 7 modes, as you may know:
Ionian (I)
Dorian (II)
Phrygian (III)
Lydian (IV)
Mixolydian (V)
Aeolian (VI)
Locrian (VII)
In a particular key, each of these modes is centered around a chord. I'll keep using the key of C major as an example, since it has no sharps or flats. Here is the C major scale, which the key of C major is based on:
C D E F G A B
Here are the chords in the key of C major:
I - C
ii - Dm
iii - Em
IV - F
V - G
vi - Am
vii - Bdim
...and here are the scales that correspond to each mode, in the key of C major:
C Ionian - C D E F G A B (same as "C major")
D Dorian - D E F G A B C
E Phrygian - E F G A B C D
F Lydian - F G A B C D E
G Mixolydian - G A B C D E F
A Aeolian - A B C D E F G
B Locrian - B C D E F G A
Please note: none of these scales has any sharps or flats, just like C major. All of these scales use the same 7 notes as C major, they just start on a different note.
So, when you play the C major scale in the second position (starting from D) you're playing the same notes as the D Dorian scale. And when you play the C major scale in the third position (starting from E), you're playing the same notes as the E Phrygian scale. You can continue this through all the modes in the key of C, including A Aeolian.
So, any time you're playing A Aeolian (also known as simply "A minor"), you're playing all the same notes as C major. So, through all the positions of A Aeolian/A minor, you're playing all the same notes as C major.
I just wanted to clarify, however, that C major and A Aeolian have the same notes, but C major and C Aeolian do NOT have all the same notes.
C major has the notes C D E F G A B
and C Aeolian (aka "C minor") has the notes C D Eb F G Ab Bb
C Aeolian is in the key of Eb major, and it has all the same notes as the Eb major scale: Eb F G Ab Bb C D

Hi. Yes I would definitely recommend getting to know one position really well before moving on to the next. Learning all the positions at once can be a bit overwhelming so stick to the first position. Play around with it and practice a technique called meandering. Here's a video that talks about this technique. The example is using E minor pentatonic but can be applied to any scale. Have fun and hope you find it helpful. Thanks so much for your comment!

I've spent a lot of time and money to finally hear this, ...scales yes, >add scale patterns, chords yes, >add chord shapes, chord progressions yes, >add many varieties... the list goes on & on. This particular presentation for me comes late, yes >maybe way to late in my opinion. But better then late as the saying goes. Thanks Steve. Keep up the good work, please. Since there's no real bible that might fit the general population... I'd be much happier if there was a logical order or a master guideline broken into groups. the word "Position" is a ambiguous term and when combined with the words shape and or patterns...well it doesn't help...>does it? Then there's thery, yes lots of it...I keet bogged down into a lot and very often...poor me!!!
I also was trying to find out how you play the other positions. In this video there mention of the first position being the root note (In this case it was G of the 6th String). Further digging , I found that The 2nd position would start at the 2nd note of the G diatonic scale which is A using the 3note shape moved to A.
The 3,4,5,6,7th position starts at note B,C,D.E,F# respectively which completes the rest of the G diatonic scale.
O.K. I was practicing a scale for some time. What I don't understand is F# instead of F (string D, 4th fret). I suppose that in a diatonic scale with all basic tones there are no sharps, here I found one. If someone knows how clarify my confusion, please explain. Otherwise the shape itself is easy to remember. Thanks, Steve.
The C major diatonic scale doesn't have any sharps or flats. It's just C D E F G A B and then back to C.
All of the other major diatonic scales have sharps or flats. Including G major diatonic: it's G A B C D E F# and then back to G.
Remember, the major diatonic scale follows the same pattern in every key, it just starts from a different root note.

Does this work the same when your tuned down
Hi. The pattern is the same for every key. Unless you are in a non-standard tuning like drop D or open tunings. If you're tuned down what changes is the key and obviously the name of the notes. So if you're tuned 1/2 step down (Eb standard) all of the notes are flat 1/2 step. G on the third fret is now going to be Gb and so on but the shape will always be the same. Awesome teacher but the finger spread is not easy. Atm impossible for me. It makes sense but my little finger doesn't reach that far. Still playing it but having to move my hand up and down on top two strings.
Thanks for sharing your experience, Frankie! And remember, if it's easier to play this scale pattern (or anything else) a little differently from how Steve plays it, that is 100% fine. The notes are the same, no matter which finger you use, so use the fingers that are easiest for you when you play! :-)

is the diatonic scale the chromatic scale?
No, the diatonic scale is a 7-note scale.

Closer to a major scale
Steve's demonstrating the G major diatonic scale in the video. But don't forget, there are minor diatonic scales also.

I got frustrated with this video because he always plays the positions too fast and pardons himself for going to fast..just play it slow for us.
