      That's because Starmer, so far, has been brilliant. The UK General Public are being so unbelievably unreasonable about donations during campaigns - the standard way to find politics for centuries. They are also unbelievably unreasonable about Winter Fuel Allowance. How on Earth can it be fair for tax-paying millenials, who are renting in precarious conditions, to support handouts for property-owning pensioners, often with substantial cash savings, without any means testing? THAT is what is grossly unfair, regressive and exploitative - not cutting off these extravagant benefits.
      Edit: As to the politics of it, I guess he's betting on long-term effects of these reforms to be positive, mitigating any short-term anger. I think they will be. But he needs to remember that even with a substantial majority, his own MPs can replace him if they start worrying too hard about their own seats.

      There are poor pensioners, they're not all multi-million property owners born shortly after the war who were able to buy property in 1974 for 50p and a pickled egg and "move up the ladder". Our view of the entire older population as Edina and Patsy fails to take account of those whose working lives were blighted by MT's harrying of the industrial North or South Wales, those younger Boomers who left school into the Arab Oil crisis rather than the "swinging 60s" and the over 85s.

    • @anonUK
      @anonUK หลายเดือนก่อน

      @stephfoxwell4620
      Exactly- people born in 1958, never mind 1974, typically weren't given the same opportunities when they left school as those born in 1946.

    Honestly doubling down for about 5 minutes on racist thugs was an absolute disgrace. Every person I know from young to old, black to white have said he dealt with the riots so badly by just trying to crush the people who turned up at the riots who did nothing wrong. He labelled all people at demonstrations far right. He has completely misread the mood of the nation when I think it’s about 60% of people their number one worry is immigration. I think it’s most probably about 80% of people that are worried about Starmer now.

    • @alana8863
      @alana8863 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You must know a strangely limited group! Surveys show that most people thought they were well-handled.
      No one had action taken against them for just turning up.
      You clearly missed the time when Starmer acknowledged people were concerned about immigration levels and didn't want to do things like hand out visas in such huge numbers (the Tory government) or support Brexit (Farage, Johnson, Truss, etc) which led to such a massive increase in small boats.
      So you don't need to worry about 80% of people - most will have listened more carefully to what he said. Run it again if you think you're right.

    Fixing the economy by cutting winter fuel allowance? The saving is around £ 1.5 billion over a total government spending of £ 1226 billion p.a.; that is 1.22 per Thousand....really?
    However, what is concerning is the Stupidity of the reform. That is apparent when you consider that a simple tapering mechanism of reduction of benefit, could have been applied to the 8 million of pensioners paying income tax.

    • @kevinodaly1545
      @kevinodaly1545 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Unfortunately everyone is screaming the extremes. Yours is the first comment I’ve seen anywhere suggesting tapering. Seems everyone is to preoccupied with screaming to see the sensible option. I’m hoping they raise the level of support generally or at least introduce tapering to the pension system to support those just over the line.

      In the 1990's the Borrie Commission of Social Justice suggested working from the core values of Beveridge to update the Social Justice System that was developed in the 1940's. There is a case for reform, targeting benefits where there is greatest need. To ensure feasibility, proper Outreach and support for people to claim what is entitled ,Government Service will need to change support a new approach . To achieve a desired approach will take time, care and proper detailed study. To this end I believe the Government should postpone the Winter Fuel proposals for a couple of years. Any savings made here should be ring-fenced to support Care in the community.
