  • This is part 2 of the tandem car trailer for the BMW E36 Rally car. I am building it to suit the rally car. It will have a tyre rack, 12v winch, cargo box and anything else I think of while I am building it.

    Nice work. You've obviously thought about it before hand, with the gussets and everything. It's the little things like that that make all the difference 20 years later when it's still good and solid and not cracking and falling apart.

      Thanks for the comment Harley Gobeo . As a rule of thumb the center-line of the axles (spring center rocker on a tandem) should be 25mm back from center of trailer deck for every 300mm of deck length with a draw-bar length of around 1800mm. So divide the deck length by 300, multiply that figure by 25 and set the axles back that far from center.
      Deck length 4.3meters ÷ 300 = 14.3. 14.3 X 25 = 357mm. (I am not going to points of mm) So set the axles back 357mm from center of the deck (not including draw-bars).

    I saw some trailers today and they were horrible, CM and Icon brand. My wife told me to just build my own since they didn't have anything over 3.5k axles in stock. I need to haul a mid size tractor and cars I buy in auctions. Well might make a video soon.

      @@Kaitler_Motorsport_Engineering Just got off the phone with my local steel supplier and had not noticed how high prices are comparing to 2020. 20ft 4" channel $95, 4x8ft 10 guage floor plate $291, 24ft 2"x4" 3/16" wall rectangle tubing $248. The prices increased about 100% and the majority of the steel comes from Mexico which is about 5 miles to the Mexican border. The US steel is available but a bit more $. I think I will have to wait for a dip to build the shop and trailer. Thanks bud.

      @@Kaitler_Motorsport_Engineering ohh yeah nice man it turned out realy nice :) only thing i could say something about is the tie down points wouldnt it be better if you welded Them on a bigger plate then welded Them to the trailer for more surfacearea or is it enough for a car mayby :) and the winchbox was awsome but how is it with water getting in and under the lid if there isnt a lip on the floor :) Still a 9,5 out of 10 😄

      @@kimssonboy Thanks for the question, if it was a machinery trailer I would have had larger reinforcing plates on the tie down but for a car trailer it is just not needed. I try not to add weight if it is not necessary. All the things in the winch box are designed to basically be in the weather so I wasn't worried about making the box waterproof (also in Australia we don't have the amount of rain and I am guessing snow that you might have in Sweden, I don't mean that in a bad way). Also I would have had to vent the battery if it was a sealed box. Mate, your English is way better than my Swedish. I am a bit jealous of people that speak multiple languages!!

    Hey mate I’m repairing a camper do you think that a 180 amp gasless mig with 0.8 wire will do the job it’s a shock mount so it’ll be in high stress

    • @Kaitler_Motorsport_Engineering
      @Kaitler_Motorsport_Engineering  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re pretty good at welding you should be able to do it. You need good penetration into the steel without blowing holes in it. Run the power as high as you can for the steel size and balance the wire speed to allow a good penetrating weld. It comes back to the ability of the guy welding it, good luck. 👍🏻

      A CIGWeld 210 which is 15amp single phase, I have had it quite a long time, still a good welder. This would be a fantastic machine as a 'do everything' welder for a small business -
      *RAZOR™ 250 COMPACT INVERTER - Multi-Function Welder-MIG-TIG-MMA* . I used to purchase welders for the workshop I managed, if you're in Australia Hare & Forbes Machineryhouse have a good section.

      @@Kaitler_Motorsport_Engineering and i take it your using 0.9/ 1.0 wire? Looks like 2.5 steel? On ebay there is a bloke selling aussie trailer plans. Really easy to follow diagram. All I need to do is take the material list to steelshop. They could even cut it all to length. Id like to think I could knock out a whole trailer in 1 day and spray it with an old compressor the next. Seems straight forward to work at home in the shed?

      Thanks for the comment Jimmy, I wanted a flat plane trailer, so much better when dealing with cars, winching and tie down points (especially damaged cars). I have been using car trailers for 45 years. No it wouldn't have been stronger and I wasn't looking to build something 'easier' I was building what I wanted.
