I'm born and raised in the hood. My older brothers were all gangmembers. My neighbors were gangmembers and in and out of prison their whole life. I later got jumped into my hood. I dropped out of high school in the 9th grade. Later on in life I started taking college classes at a community college and I took some criminology classes. Criminology, homicide, administration of justice all seemed interesting to me since I had been in that life and knew a lot of real ones that were all about that life. Most of my criminology classes except for one were all taught by white suburban moms that grew up middle class. They had some corny ideas of why gangmembers do what they do. On the bright side when I talked to my professors they actually listened to me and didn't act as if they knew more about ganglife than I did. I looked up this professor Bill Sanders and he's teaching at Cal State and is an expert witness getting paid and has a lot of false information.

People don't join gangs just cuz home life is horrible. To a kid like me the gangsters were the coolest ones around. They have no rules, they have girls after them, they have money and no job and are never in school. That's what Incluenced me and they also accepted me in middle school I was a kid who played sports tried skateboarding and bmx but the first friend I had and the first person to show me loyalty was an older gang member. After that I would have done almost anything to keep that friendship and loyalty. It was good in the early years but drug addiction ultimately ruined it all. Just my two cents

So he's not really there to help them get found not Guilty. He's there to help reduce their sentences. He's the dude that lessens the odds of- gang enhancements, 924g , and Stacks of other charges that raise mandatory minimums through the roof.
If ppl are really Not Guilty and they plan to flat out fight the case and beat the case. Then they don't need to hire this dude. It don't matter if your in a gang if u get found Not Guilty bro 😂

We are all products of not only our environments, which is easier to overcome, we are also products of our circumstances. Everybody's circumstances are different... Two different people living in the same environment, could be living under two completely different circumstances and have two complete different mindsets regarding their environment or any situations they're faced with. Circumstances mixed with human nature & the desire to belong is whats ultimately going to shape the choices that we make growing up. And i dont think the professor realizes that.
This "professor" guy is from a whole other world who grew up in a complete different environment under different circumstances than most of us that grew up in rough areas. He didn't have to make the same choices a lot of us had to make growing up. That doesn't mean he's wrong, he just has a different perspective, doesn't mean he's right either... But he IS wrong for being judgmental & failing to realize circumstances shape perspective. In his collegiate, better than thou mindset he thinks he's better than current gang members committing crimes because he wouldn't make the same choices they do. Bitch you were never faced with the same circumstances these kids are, with your fruity ass... Disrespectful & extremely judgmental fuck this guy. I like what he's "trying" to do, but he needs to humble himself & quit judging and be a little more understanding if he ever wants to make any real change. Go back to your books you fuckin nerd. In his mind he's right and lucky's wrong. People with that mentality will never understand the circumstances a young gang member was faced with to become a gangmember & the choices they HAVE to make,. Anyone who's never been faced with the same circumstances won't understand either
I'm a 38 yr old family man & small business owner nowadays but I still proudly represent where I'm from. I take care of my family, I keep my circle small & still tap in with homies i got love for on some family shit. I aint out there banging anymore or committing any crimes, but I did mine & paid mine. I'm still here & still aktive but I do me nowadays. When it's time to ride it's right back to program time but until then im living my best life with loved ones and focusing on providing a future for my family. some call that a contradiction, i call it a product of my circumstances

Not a good look vato, con respecto. You reminded me of Olmos in American Me when he was in the shoe store with his ruca, “He’s just doing his pinche job!” The vato was simply presenting his research to you and your audience not sure why you felt the need to jam him up every 5 seconds even after the vato told you he was aware his research wasn’t true for everybody and validated your own individual experience.
That said, if you wanted to ask questions or possibly dispute his research, you could have been a lot more productive and insightful had you gone about it in a different way. Maybe some of the stuff he was saying triggered you for some reason and you should take a look at why that happened.
It would have been firme if you brought up socioeconomic issues and lack of resources in general that often lead to gang involvement. You could have brought up the internalization of discrimination and racism, and other factors that negatively impact Black and Brown youth which often leads to joining a gang, etc.
Obviously, there is a lot more you have talked about, but one topic in particular that I wish you would have brought up is the lack of opportunity for higher education in black and brown communities and what it would look like if we had more Chicano professors doing this research and what we could add to the field since many of us have actually lived that lifestyle. Not to say that this professor doesn’t have anything to add, as I’m sure he would agree with this issue. Can you imagine how many of us would have avoided gangs if we had the same opportunity as white folks to go college? Only 2% of Chicanos receive a professional degree or masters degree in this country, and less than 1% receive a doctorate degree.
Finally, I’ll leave you with this, as an educated Chicano working on my second masters degree (and eventually a doctorate), and as a professing Christian that walks the walk, the professor was right when he was talking about violence and how easy it is to respond to violence with violence. This is why the teaching of Jesus Christ is so revolutionary. How many of us can truly turn the other cheek and love our enemies? Killing and inflicting harm on our own gente is only hurting ourselves and our own community. We are a reflection of one another.
Anyway, I hope you take this constructive criticism to heart carnal. Tapping in from NorCal much love to all the raza everywhere!

The guest was absolutely in the wrong about *everybody* being guilty that’s fighting a case. It’s multiple people that get caught up in the system/legal fight that are innocent. One instance was a fight I was involved in a few years back.. me & a few others stomped a guy out (for righteous reason) at a bar where he put hands on a loved ones sister. The guy ended up talking to police & told names.. one of the names he told the person left hours before we pulled up.. but he thought he was there. A few days later the police was at his house & grabbed him as he left out for work in the morning (kid never was involved in the streets, no record, no involvement whatsoever as once again he left an hour before things jumped off). He as an innocent had to fight for his freedom & contemplated taking a plea to 1 year as opposed to 5+ if he fought it out of fear. Thankfully it got thrown out at the end of it. But that situation just made me think how often that happens. That amongst the other innocent men that are wrongfully convicted & released after wasting most their life in the system due to flaws. I couldn’t imagine. This guy has no idea what he’s talking about, he doesn’t come from the life he’s ever so involved in “researching”.
