I was afraid I may have over pruned my two olive trees.....I realize, after this video, I barely touched them.

If you look at the way they prune olives in commercial orchards, they'll sometimes cut older trees all the way back to the lowest crotch where all the branches diverge and encourage new growth from there. It's not a full coppicing job, but it's damn close. Once established, olives are surprisingly difficult to mess up.

I’ve been terrified to prune my 3 year old Arbequina. This was so easy to understand and I feel more confident to prune. Thanks!

Really helpful, thank you! I have a 8 year old tree in a 30 gal pot that's super leggy, guess I'll prune it back this weekend!

This is exactly the directive I was looking for in my search. I too (have a pair)of young Olive Tees that have planted a little more than a year ago . I have both growing on each side of the driveway, anticipating a height of 15’-20’ ft. I don’t want “bushy” Olive trees for sure. I can just imagine the Gardener firing up his hedge-trimmers and having a go at them. Don’t want a pair of Tootsie Pops !

Wow, this was very informative! I have one in a pot that is quite large and getting too whispy and gangly looking. Just looks bad. I may try a big trim on it to save it.

You can cut them back pretty hard. Just cut them back to a shape you are happy with and it will be fine.

Great video. I have 1 Arbequina that I purchased that is multi-stem but very low - no 1 leader to create a 'trunk'. If I leave it, it'll brown like a bush,...but I'd like it more like a tree. Should I just go in and lop them off, leaving 1 strong one then plant it so it's going straight up?

Awesome Video! I just pruned my olive tree after watching another persons video.. I pruned it while drinking strong IPA.. ( "Not Recommended", lol, as I just snapped off branches with bare hands and didn't take great care) I butchered it up a bit but managed to bend a few branches back as it was sort of lopsided.. Anyway I wish I had watched your video first! As it's much better than the one I used as my " Olive Pruning Guide".. lol.. May I please ask you what brand of clippers you're using? And model, as I need a new pair! Thank you and I liked your Dogs Cameo Appearance! I have Goat Schnauzers.. What kind of Pup is he? Anyway! I enjoyed watching you prune and I got a lot out of your Video!!!! Thank You! : ) I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area Wine Country.. Good Olive growing Mediterranean Climate here... ; ) Cheer's Mate!

my understanding , all plants & trees will balance root growth with shoot growth , the roots below ground need to support the leaf growth above ground & V a V , the leaf growth above ground needs to support the root growth below ground , once a plant is pruned , the remaining leaf system can no longer support the root system below the surface , so the plant will sluff off part of it's root system to put the plant back into balance , make no mistake though pruning will stress the plant making it more susceptible to pest or pathogen attack ,
the use of plant tonics like kelp & aloe vera watering's & the application of compost &/or worm castings as a top dress or water extract will help to mitigate this problem ,
the pros to pruning have mostly been mentioned by vasili , one pro not mentioned is , the part of the root system that is released to bring the plant/tree back into balance as mentioned above , becomes food for soil dwellers to consume & turn into plant available nutrients , saving the need for any tillage to inject organic matter under the surface

    Hi Vasili
I have a couple of olive trees that have not been pruned and are around three metres tall.
What is the best way to prune them back to a manageable level and how harsh can I be in the prune?

I have a small olive tree, about 4 1/2 feet tall. It is actually split at the bottom right above the soil. Ideally, I would like to cut one of the two splits and make it a single trunk tree (one of the "trunks" is perfectly shaped for this). My fear is that I may shock the tree and it won't survive - both trunks are roughly 3/8" (9.5 mm). Or should I just not chance it and work with what I've got? Your input would be so much appreciated!

Hi. I have a 20 yr old olive tree which I’m afraid I have neglected. Now although it looks great - a big ball of lush leaves - it is a complete mess inside with a million bare branches all over the place with no leaves. Therefore no light can access the tree. What should I do to put it right? Thanks.

Hi Vasili I bought an oleander europa at a supermarket, I intend to make it a bonsai,my question is, I've repotted it,into good substrate and it's late spring here in Scotland. It has lots of not that great looking flower buds, should i chop them off to promote new growth ,rather than it trying to flower?

    what about avocado trees?

    • @dowhatsright2889
      @dowhatsright2889 ปีที่แล้ว

Look at video about avocado tree pruning. You can basically shape the way you want, but keep your leaves to protect the trunk. Avocado trees have different requirements than an olive tree. The young avocado tree loves the sunshade/leaf litter of the leaves and painting of the trunk (harsh high temps above 90°F) and exposed branches need a white painting like a citrus tree, otherwise, an avocado tree can get sunburned bark.
